How do you keep a grip on the evidence when you’ve been witnessed by numerous city people, committing all sorts of crimes and atrocities?

There are many possibilities here as to why that is, but……

One of them is called ‘collusion with the audit side’. And that’s the most likely scenario as to what is happening here.

As to how exactly that thing is supposed to work, it’s relatively simple.

By spending money and so forth beforehand, the Lord becomes close friends with the knights who are responsible for conducting the actual audit.

By doing so, he will have the audit conducted in a lackluster manner, which will end up in a conclusion that no evidence was found and that the Lord did nothing wrong.

This way, no matter how many times the Lord is going to be audited, no evidence will be found on him, and no proper investigation is going to be carried out.

This also means that as long as the knights are in cohorts with the Lord, he can cover up his own or his son’s tracks forever if he so desires.

Of course, I had no proof to back it up.

It was only one of many other possibilities out there.

But what if the Lord and the knights were actually connected by that exact background?

It would be impossible for the law to be able to get the Lord and his son to answer for their crimes.

While on the contrary, we would surely end up as the ones who would be thrown into jail for defamation and treason.

So, the very first thing that we need to do is to know exactly what kind of situation we are dealing with here.

Fortunately enough, that knight’s attitude said it all to me, so I chose to quickly withdraw from there……..

「Nya, nya……. You seem to have a whole lot of things on your mind right now, Rein.」

When I told Kanade all of my thoughts on that subject, she looked genuinely impressed.

「Yes, but I honestly wish that I would have been wrong.」

So in the end, the Lord is not the only enemy with whom we are dealing with here.

The Knights who are supposed to be defending the city from evil and corruption are also our enemies.

As to be expected, not all the members of the group must be connected to the Lord and his machinations, but…….

At the very least, the knights conducting the audit would be connected to the Lord, for sure.

No wonder they haven’t been able to find any evidence of the Lord’s misdeeds.

「Now then, this is quite a pickle to deal with that we have here……」

「Nyah…… If the Knights Order are on good terms with the Lord, then no matter how much you try to see him brought to justice, it will all be for naught, right?」

「We must somehow expose the various crimes and misdeeds of the Lord. But the Knights Order, who are supposed to be making sure that everyone’s abides by the law, are doing whatever the Lord orders them to do.」

「What if they were to audit the Knights as well? That would surely allow them to expose what some of the individuals in the Order are doing, right?」

「Yes, but it would be something that would be extremely hard to do…… Because there’s no such thing as a personal audit allowed. Whether or not it’s admissible as evidence, I’m sure if it’s not good enough, we are going to be charged with treason and defamation over and over again.」

「Nyaah…… This entire situation is making me feel really mad for some reason!」

「Yeah? Tell me about it.」

Our enemy here is the Lord, the figure with the most authority in the entire city.

The Knights Order are also our enemies.

We will have to get out of this situation one way or another sooner or later, but….

What exactly are we supposed to do now?

「Excuse me!」

When I turned around after hearing someone calling out to us, I saw a woman dressed in knight’s armor.

She seemed to be a little bit older than me, so that made her…… around twenty, maybe?

Her long hair was pulled back in a ponytail style.

Her dignified expression was very knight-like, and a light of strong will could be seen in her eyes.

「Nya, nyah! A knight!　What’s this!? Have you been tailing us!?」

「Kanade, please calm down for a moment.」

Seeing the lady knight, Kanade assumed the battle stance right away, but I highly doubt that a single knight was sent right away to deal with us, and in the middle of town, to boot.

「Just now, you were at the Knights Order’s branch office, right?」

「Well, gee, I don’t know? Aren’t you taking me for someone else? I don’t actually remember ever going into such a place.」

「I was there, too. I was there and I overheard you guys talking. You were discussing the damage caused by the son of the Lord.」

「You do realize that eavesdropping is not exactly a thing that an honorable knight should be doing, is it?」

「Yes, and I’m truly sorry for that. I didn’t mean to do that, but I just got caught up in it, and…… No, it’s just an excuse, anyways. I apologize if I offended you. It’s just the way you described it to be.」

The female knight bowed her head down as she offered the words of apology.

I was surprised at how easily she switched onto the defensive here.

Normally, I thought the Knights to be a really proud bunch.

It is a profession that only those who have passed through many tough barriers and obstacles may hope to be a part of.

There are many who also believe that such a profession allows for a certain dose of elitism and bragging rights.

And yet, to bow down your head so easily like this in front of someone who was not even a Knight himself……

Could it be that this woman is actually really polite and has a sense of justice?

Or is it just a ploy to get us to let our guard down so that they could strike at us later?

……..No, it’s too early for us to be able to decide that.

In this kind of situation, I guess it would be best for us to rely on Kanade’s intuition.

「Well, what do you think, Kanade?」

「Hmm…… I don’t actually think that this woman has any bad intentions. I actually feel that she must be feeling pretty bad about this entire situation to a certain extent.」

At times like this, Kanade’s intuition, or rather, her ability to see through people’s intentions, was something truly dependable.

This might just be their trait as a race as a whole. After all, it is said that the Cat Spirit Tribe is the closest to being the wildest of all of the Ultimate Species.

As a result, their intuition is very keen and their ability to see through others is excellent, second to none.
