CHAPTER 60: THE FIFTH ULTIMATE SPECIES PART 1

The girl looked really limp and looked terribly weak.

She looked so fragile that I was getting a sense that she could disappear into thin air at any given moment.

「Ah…… nh……」

All of a sudden, the girl’s eyes burst into tears.

Maybe it was because in her dreams she just so happened to experience something really sad or painful, or she was having a straight up nightmare.

「…… Ngh!」

At that exact moment, all thoughts of this entire situation being one elaborate trap, or the identity of the Magic Power source were all blown away from my mind.

Because there was no way I was going to just let it slide, seeing a little girl being locked up in a dark cell like this. This was downright wrong, no matter how you look at it.

And so I broke the lock on the cell’s door to pieces, kicked the door open and got inside of the cell, approaching the little girl.

「…… Huh!? W-What……?」

Even though the girl seemed to be startled, she just continued to lie down and did not even move an inch.

Apparently, she didn’t even have the energy left in her body to properly get up and see what was going on.

「…… Are you alright?」

Gently, making sure that I would not hurt her by accident, I picked the girl’s body up.

Holding her in my arms, I was actually shocked and amazed just how light she was.

For she was as light as a feather, or maybe even lighter than that.

A pair of fox ears were popping out of her fluffy hair.

There were also three long and fluffy fox tails that could be seen swaying miserably between the gaps of her tattered clothes.

Her body was small and frail, so she might have been even shorter and more slender than Sora and Luna were.

Maybe it was because of her appearance, but looking at her right now, I couldn’t help it but to see a small and frightened animal instead of a regular person.

「‘Heal’」

「…… Who…… are you……?」

When I cast a basic healing spell on her, the girl seemed to have recovered her strength to some extent, and she looked at me with her large and frightened eyes.

Seeing someone look at me like that was actually heartbreaking.

「…… It’s okay. Everything is going to be alright now.」

「Ah……」

Saying those words, I hugged the girl’s body gently.

Carefully, gently, with tact and finesse, as if I was actually handling a delicate piece of glasswork.

I hugged the girl gently and gave her a light pat on the back, as if I wanted to communicate to her that she was safe now and that there was nothing for her to be afraid of.

「I’m…… someone who’s actually on your side.」

「Yes. I’m on your side. I’m your ally, you could even say.」

「…… Ugh……」

The girl timidly hugged me, as if she was still afraid to let her guard down even for a moment.

Oh well, it’s not like I thought that she would be able to trust me completely right from the get go.

But…… It’s just that……

Seeing her right now, she must have been trapped in here for so long and put through hell for her to cling onto a complete stranger like that, clinging onto my words so desperately.

The way in which she reached out her hands towards me and looked at me…… There was no time here to actually stop and think if this could have been a trap or not……

It was a gesture of someone who was desperate for help.

At the very least, that’s what it seemed like to me.

「…… Ugh……」’

We stayed just like that for a moment or two, but then I could feel that the girl started to move slightly, her body visibly squirming.

「It…… hurts a little…… can’t breathe……」

「Ah, sorry.」

I then let the girl go gently and slowly.

However, since she was still pretty wobbly on her feet, I placed my hand on her back to support her, so that she wouldn’t fall to the ground.

That action of mine seemed to have surprised the girl greatly, for her eyes opened wide as she looked at me with astonishment.

「Why are you…… being so kind and gentle with me……?」

「I told you already. I’m on your side. I’m your ally.」

「An…… ally……?」

「Yes, that’s right. I’m Rain. What’s your name?」

「…… Ni…… na……」.

The girl…… Nina murmured in a weak and quiet voice.

「Nina, if you don’t mind me asking how did you end up here?　Could it be that you were perhaps…… captured by the Lord…… the Master of this house and then brought here as a prisoner……?」

「…… Yes.」

Nina simply nodded her head.

Once again, her face was colored in a dark shade of fear and pain.

Maybe, once again, she was reminded of something that she would much rather wanted to forget than being reminded of it.

Seeing her react like that, I gently patted her back, to calm her down and give her some more courage.

「Thank you…… very…… much……」

「Did that help you calm down? Even if for a little bit?」

「…… Y-Yeah.」

「Do you think you could tell me why you are being held captive here? If you are in trouble because of the Lord, maybe my friends and I can help you out somehow.」

「…… H-Help me? You want to help me?」

「Yes, of course. That’s why I’m here.」

「Uuugh…… Eeehhh……」

All of a sudden, tears started to flow down Nina’s face.

I don’t know the details of her situation, so I can’t even pretend that I understand.

However, there is one thing I know for sure here: this child has probably been through enduring things that someone like her should never be forced to endure.

Not to mention that she was all alone.

「Ah…… I’m…… I’m sorry…… Please…… don’t worry….. those tears…… are the tears of…… relief…… I just…… so selfishly……」

「No, it’s okay…… Everything is going to be fine now……」

「Uhh…… Hikuh…… Gusu……」

It took her a while to cry her eyes out, but eventually Nina managed to regain her composure.

Now, the only proof that she used to be in so much pain was her slightly red and swollen eyes.

「I…… I used to live deep…… deep in the mountains……」

Slowly, Nina began to talk about her own circumstances and how she came to be here.

Just as I suspected, Nina was indeed a member of the Ultimate Species.

Specifically, she was a member of the God Tribe, the species that seemed to be closely related to Cat Spirit Tribe.

I know that the species is called God Tribe, but it’s actually a really complicated matter to explain. To make a long story short, members of the God Tribe are not Gods per se.

A long time ago, their tribe was given power by the Gods themselves and received part of their name from the Gods, which is why they are a tribe that got the name of the ‘God Tribe’.
