CHAPTER 75: WHAT LIES BEYOND THE FALL…… PART 1

Edgar Fromware was lying on top of a bed in the hospital.

Thick layers of bandages were wrapped around all over his body.

Although a large amount of healing herbs and ointments were used to treat him, the excruciating amount of pain that he was in never did go away, even for a moment.

The pain was incessant, as if his body was being pierced from the inside out with thousands upon thousands of small needles.

「Fuck…… Why……!? Why do I have to go through something like this……!?」’

Edgar bit his lip as he sat on the bed, unable to move his body all that freely.

It was unreasonable.

It was impossible.

This was surely just a bad dream.

Now, even though he was feverishly thinking that, it was only wishful thinking. Nothing that could actually override the reality of his current situation.

「How are you doing today?」

One of the Healers came to check on Edgar.

Edgar wouldn’t respond, but instead decided to keep his mouth shut.

「Alright then, let’s see how your injuries look like today……」

To the Healer, Edgar’s demeanor and behavior was nothing more but old news. He basically got used to it by now.

So he would just proceed to check on Edgar’s injuries, without paying any attention to his attitude in the slightest.

「Well, it seems that your recovery is proceeding nicely.」

「……………」

「At this rate, you should be ready to be discharged from the hospital around next month. Though I’m afraid that you will no longer be able to walk without the aid of a cane for the rest of your life.」

「…… What did you say?」

Edgar can’t help but to react like that to the preposterous words that he just heard.

「O-Oy, OI……!!! What the hell was that supposed to mean!?」

「I mean, it just the way it is.　You will never be able to walk properly on your own ever again . It’s an after-effect of all those injuries that you have sustained.」

「That’s ridiculous…… Oi, you’re a Healer, aren’t you!　Heal my wounds perfectly! Do your goddamned job! That’s an order!」

「Please don’t ask me for the impossible. Because that’s what this is: impossible. That’s just how deep and severe your injuries were.

「Don’t be fucking absurd……」

「And more importantly…… 」…

The Healer’s look changed to be way sharper than before.

He glared at Edgar intensely……

It was that kind of glare as if he was trying to burn a hole through his stomach.

「Treating you is every bit as uncomfortable as I imagined it would be. So even if I had the means to perfectly heal you back to full health, I would never actually do that.」

「Wha…… You bastard, who the hell do you think I am!? For you to speak to me like that!?」

「You are the only son of the FORMER Lord, aren’t you?」

「H-Huh……? Former……?」

「Oh, didn’t you know? Your father is already imprisoned and awaiting trial for all of the crimes that he had committed.」

「What……?」

「There is nothing left of all the power that the two of you used to have. There’s nothing you can do about it, either. Up until now you have been doing whatever it was that you wanted, but now the time has come for you to pay the price for it all.

「N-Nonsense…… I’m the only son of the Lord, God damn it! I shall rule this city in the future! Me! Me alone! And you…… you are nothing more but my toys! Mere playthings!」

「Haah…… So, I can see that the shock of hearing that revelation was so severe that you find it hard to accept reality as it is? It’s really pathetic when something like this happens, really. Not to mention unbecoming of a man. You are so pitiful that I cannot even be angry at you. You know what, I don’t even care anymore. I just want you to make that recovery so that I don’t have to get involved with you ever again. Well then I’ll come back later to check on you.

「W-Wait……! Wait, you bastard……!!」

Edgar tried to stop the Healer from leaving the room, but he was completely ignored.

Just like that, he was left all alone in the hospital room.

「Someone like me…… But he’s a Healer…… so why……!?」

Throughout his entire life, Edgar never doubted that he was above everyone else. Not even once.

And yet, he was pitied and looked down upon by the people who were supposed to be way below him, worth even less than dirt on the soles of his boots.

At that single moment, Edgar’s pride was mercilessly torn to shreds.

「Impossible…… T-This…… this cannot be…… This is stupid…… This cannot…… This cannot……!!」’

Edgar was the kind of man who possessed an incredible amount of self-esteem.

But now, being pitied by and looked down upon by that Healer hurts his heart and ego really badly.

Of course, such a turn of events was well within the realm of what he deserved for everything that he had done……

Not being aware of this simple fact himself, Edgar continued to distract himself from the grim reality by repeatedly telling himself that this was impossible and that there was no way that this situation was actually real.

And as he was doing that……

That’s when it happened.

The door to his room suddenly started to open.

Once that happened, Edgar looked at the door.

Could it be that the Healer had returned? Could it be that he had forgotten something?

No, there’s no way that this was the case. It would be way too fast for him to do something like that.

As he was wondering about that, more than one man walked into the room.

None of those people looked familiar to Edgar.

「W-Who the hell are you, you bastards……!?」

「It sounds like the rumors were indeed true.」

「I really didn’t expect to find the Lord’s son here of all places.」

「Oh well. Conveniently for us, it would seem that he is in no condition to be moving anywhere anytime soon……」

「O-Oi, I asked you a question…… Who the fuck are you!? Answer me!」

Even though Edgar did not know those men, the atmosphere that was emanating from them was more than enough to make Edgar’s blood freeze up in his veins.

And so, the only thing he could do was to raise his voice the way he did.

It was a completely pathetic act, nothing more than a way for him to try and disguise just how utterly terrified he really was deep down inside of his heart.

「Say, do you perhaps remember who we are, by any chance?」

「Hmph…… And why the fuck would I even bother with remembering the ugly mugs of some dirty plebeians such as you!?」

「Why, you little shit……!」

「Hey there, easy now. Wait just a moment. There is hardly any sense in doing the bastard in before we make him understand the severity of his sins.」
