CHAPTER 87: A NEW WEAPON

Dealing with smugglers means that there is an extremely high likelihood of this hunt turning into a battle.

So we need to prepare for that accordingly.

Because of that, the next place that we stopped at was Gantz-san’s shop.

「Hello.」

「Oh, it’s you, lad.」

When I entered the store, Gantz-san raised his eyes from the book that he was reading and closed it with a snap.

「Nyah…… Do you have that much free time on your hands?」

「Ghaha, and I see that you are as upfront as ever, young lady.」

「That’s because we don’t have time to spare! that’s how busy we are!」

「And I was actually taking my break just now.」

「You’re taking a break, so you decided to read some book?　That would make you even more tired, wouldn’t it now?」

「No…… I suspect it would only tire you out, Kanade.」

「Hey! That was mean!」

Hearing Tanya’s prickling words, Kanade got really angry but then started sulking almost right afterwards.

「My job is all about moving my body around all day. But I also need to keep my brain on moving from time to time, otherwise it might rust and deteriorate. So, what’s up with you all? Why the sudden visit?」

「I thought that the weapon I asked you to make is going to be completed soon.」

「Oh, yeah, that’s right. It’s ready alright.」

Gantz-san tucked the book away on a shelf and disappeared into the back of the store for the time being.

So now we only had to wait for him to come back.

It took him a while, but eventually Gantz-san came back with a dagger in his hands.

「Here. This is my absolute masterpiece that I made specifically for you, Rein.」

He said while handing the dagger over to me.

I pulled it out of its scabbard and checked the blade.

What kind of metal is it made out of?

The blade of the dagger was flaming red in color and it was slightly curved.

「It’s so beautiful…… I don’t know why, but I can’t really take my eyes off of it.」

「Sister Dearest, don’t you think that gawking over sharp objects is a really perverted hobby to have? Especially if that blade already belongs to someone else?」

「Luna, why do I think that you are mocking me right now?」

「Yup! Because I totally did!」

「…… Well then, if it’s a fight you want, it’s a fight you shall get!」

「P-Please…… don’t fight…… fighting is…… no good……」

Sora and Luna were glaring at one another with such intense hostility that even poor Nina got worried and tried to stop them from bickering any further.

Honestly, it was a rather common sight for our group these days.

And since Nina was now paying close attention to Sora and Luna, they couldn’t really help it but to stop fighting and decided to settle their little dispute later.

It’s a good thing that they know they need to behave in front of Nina, but my only wish is that she does not pick any weird habits from them in the future.

「Hm?」

While checking the dagger out, I found something really odd about it.

There was something unfamiliar implemented on the hilt of the weapon.

「Is this…… a trigger of some sort?」’

Is it a switch of some kind?

Because no matter how I tried to look at it, there was certainly a trigger installed on the hilt of the dagger.

Is there some kind of mechanism inside of it that makes the blade pop out when the trigger is pulled or something like that?

「Gantz-san, what is this?」

「Hmph…… That, you see, is the fruit of my extensive research.」

「You mean, it’s like a mechanism that lets you shoot the blade from the hilt?」

「Hmph. I’m not something as cheap and uninspiring.」

But if it is not anything like that, then what it is?

Looking at Gantz-san, he had that really peculiar smirk on his face.

It was the expression of someone who was simply dying to start explaining things to the one who was asking.

So I can see that there was a part of him that was still pretty much like that of a little child.

But I guess that this part of him was a nice contrast to his more stubborn and serious adult side.

「Gantz-san…… Would you be so kind as to explain to me how this dagger works?」

「Sure thing. Fine by me.」

It seems that he was waiting for those exact words, and Gantz-san happily began to explain in greater detail.

「This is a weapon made exclusively for you, Rein. Even if someone else was to put their hands on it, this weapon would never reveal its true value to them, no matter what.」

「Exclusively for me……?」

「You are a Beast Tamer, Rein, and the one who also happens to use the Ultimate Species in battle. That’s the detail I tried to focus on here. This dagger is capable of storing the power of those young ladies inside of its hilt. And by doing so, it can create a tremendous amount of destructive power.」

「This dagger can store our power inside of itself?　Nyah, that’s amazing! I can’t believe you could make something like that.!」

「But can it really do that?　From the looks of it, it looks a bit like a normal dagger, only with some strange mechanism slapped on top of it.」

「Muh, are you trying to criticize my ultimate masterpiece?」
「No, it’s nothing like that. It’s just that…… You didn’t actually try it out yourself, didn’t you? So, like, aren’t you worried that this thing might not actually work as intended?」

Come to think of it, there was a whole lot of truth to Tanya’s words.

If this weapon had some sort of flow that would cause the stored power to go off on its own in the middle of battle, that would spell a whole lot of problems for us.

「Do you mind if I give it a try right away? To see if it’s actually safe to use?」

「Muh…… I think that my abilities as a blacksmith are being tested here, and that is something that I’m not that great of a fan of, but…… Oh well, I guess that it actually needs to be tested out in an actual combat situation. All right, follow me.」

Gantz-san disappeared into the back of the store once again.

I followed him outside and reached the back of the store.

The back of the store was a little square yard.

There was a target dummy made out of wood that was set up, and it looked like something that would be used specifically to test out new weapons.

「First of all……..」

I imagine a virtual enemy right in front of me.

I hold the dagger and swing it from right to left.

Next, from left to top.

Finally, I strike from top to bottom.

I turn the dagger around and stow it in its scabbard.

「Oooh, Rein! That was so cool!」

CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!

Kanade and Nina’s cheering honestly made me feel a little bit embarrassed.

「Fumuh.」

The dagger was quite comfortable to use.

It felt more comfortable in my hand than any other dagger I have ever held in my hand before.

And it was not too heavy or too light, just the right amount of weight to it..

「Fuh!」

I lightly slashed at the wood target dummy.

There was a long and deep cut in the target dummy alongside the trajectory of the blade.

「The sharpness seems to be just fine……」

With this, there will be no problem with me using the knife as I normally would.

Or rather, I can’t complain about anything here.

It’s the best dagger I’ve ever known, as far as I can tell.

But if there is one thing that bothers me with this dagger, it would be……

It’s probably the gimmick that Gantz-san was talking about, after all.

Being able to store the power of the Ultimate Species inside of itself.

How effective would it be combat-wise?

「Gantz-san, I would like to test out that gimmick that you were talking about. But how do I even do that in the first place?」

I called out to Gantz-san, who was watching my practice and trial from the sidelines. To that question, he simply smirked under his nose.

「Oh, that? It’s really easy. First of all, you will want to hold hands with one of the ladies over there.」

「Hold hands?」

He said that the dagger can store the power of the Ultimate Species inside of itself, so does that mean……

Could it be that holding hands is supposed to work like a medium for sharing that power? Or something like that?

「Alright then……」

「「「「ME! ME! PICK ME!!!!」」」」

「…… R-Right……」

…… Would someone like to help me out with this?

As I turned around to say that, everyone raised their hands in unison.

「I was the first to raise my hand!」

「What are you talking about? I know that I was the one to raise my hands before anyone else!」

「All that is needed for this experiment is the ability to observe things dispassionately. So it goes without saying that Sora is the best possible choice for this job!」

「I am the most useful one! At least I’m way better than Sora!」

「I…… I would like to help you out…… Rein……」

There was a whole lot of tense atmosphere and literal sparks flying in between the girls as they started arguing with one another.

Everyone then looked at me in unison and asked:

「「「「「REIN!? WHO ARE YOU GOING TO CHOOSE!?」」」」

「…… Huh? Umm, this is……」

Why are you all suddenly so fired up to do this, everyone?

This is just a small experiment. Nothing to get so riled up about.

「Umm, let’s see…… Alright then. Nina. If you’d please.」

「R-Right!」

I chose Nina as my partner in order to be completely safe.

Although everyone else looked frustrated that they were not chosen, they couldn’t complain about Nina and didn’t do anything odd about that fact.

「U-Umm, ahh…… P-Please excuse me……」

For some reason, Nina’s tone became strangely coy, and I gently took my hand in hers.

When I gently squeezed it back, Nina’s three tails twitched simultaneously.

What’s the matter with her?

I’m not doing anything crazy to her, it’s just holding her hand……

「Umm…… Okay, so…… Now what am I supposed to do?」

「Try pulling the trigger while both of you stay connected like that.」

「…… Like this?」

When I pulled the trigger……

I felt something flowing in from our linked hands.

At the same time, the blade of the dagger started to shine bright.

「Now!」

At Gantz-san’s cue, I reflexively moved my body.

I let go of Nina’s hand and held the dagger firmly.

Stepping into the ground as if I wanted to kick it with all of my might, I faced the target dummy and charged right at it.

I then swung the shining dagger down in one fell swoop!

…… and the target dummy , which was made out of solid wood, shattered into tiny little pieces.

Hey, come on now!

What’s the deal with that sheer destructive force…… This is downright ridiculous!

…… No.

Since I was borrowing the power of the Ultimate Species hare, does that mean that something like this can be considered as normal?

「Hmm, it looks like the experiment was a resounding success.」

「You call this thing just now a success……?」

「What? Are you dissatisfied with the result?」

「I don’t really know how am I going to utilize it…… But aside from that, no complaints from me.」

I wish that there was no need for me to use that kind of power…… But that is just that. My wishful thinking.

If we were to fight the Demons again we would need this power…… I am sure of it.

The odds are probably low, but it’s better to be prepared than sorry.

「By the way, the name of this weapon is “Kamui”!」

「Thank you very much. I’ll make sure to take good care of it.

Thus, I got myself a new weapon.
