CHAPTER 95: THE INTERROGATION PART 1

「Alright then.」

It would be terribly inefficient to take all of the poachers back to their base camp again.

Or rather than inefficient, it would just be a pure pain in the ass.

And since we were able to at least get some sleep partially through the night……

I guess we might as well take them all to town already, since we are partially there.

But before we get to do that, there is some other business that we need to take care of.

We need to find out more about those poachers and who they’re dealing with specifically.

Because acquiring intel on their business partners and crushing their operation was also a part of the request.

But since we are already going to be putting people over the coals……

We might as well try and obtain some information out of Ogg and Kreutz.

As a result of our recent skirmish, both Ogg and Kreutz have completely lost their will to fight.

I have tied them up nice and tight with Narukami’s wires, so I’m not really worried about them trying to make a run for it anytime soon, but……

As expected, we can’t just leave them here completely unguarded and to their own devices. That would be straight up foolishness.

「Alright…… Sora, Luna, and…… Nina. Could you keep an eye on these two for the time being?」

「Umu! As you wish! Would you like us to torture them a little bit while we are being at it? Make them regret what they did?」

「No, no, no. There’s no need to go that far with them.」

「Oh, there isn’t? Oh well, it was worth a try.」

「Honestly, Sora and the others thought that they well deserved some punishment for mocking you like that.」

「Are we…… going to do something…… painful to those two……?」

Alright, you two. It would be great if you could stop saying such Villain-like things for the time being.

Otherwise you are going to give Nina a very bad idea what this is all about.

「Alright then, you two. I have got some questions for you, and I hope that you will answer them all if you know what’s good for you.」

I stood in front of Ogg and Kreutz.

As I did that, my companions assumed positions to be able to react to anything should the need arise, just to be on the safe side.

They are very dependable companions, I’ll give them all that.

Knowing that nothing would get in our way now, I could finally proceed forward with the questioning.

「Why did you do such a stupid thing?」

「……………」

「Could it be that you were such sore losers that you couldn’t stomach the fact that you have lost to us? Or was it perhaps that useless pride as the seniors of yours that made you think that this shouldn’t be allowed?」

「……………」

「Come on, don’t stay silent and just answer me. And just so you know, depending on your answer I might even consider releasing you from your restraints. But if you choose to remain silent and do not cooperate, I’m just going to turn you in to the Guild in the same way as those poachers.」

「Rein…… Could it be that you are angry at those chumps?」

「Normally you would never be this tense, wouldn’t you?」

「Well, I mean…… Yes, I guess that you are right. But…… calling me angry would be an understatement now.」

It was all coming down to this ridiculous match that those two wanted us to participate in.

And that match was only taking place because of that stupid double booking on this particular request.

But still, we managed to win the match fair and square.

And yet, Ogg and Kreuz broke their promise and tried to take all the credit for the request, like a pair of sore losers that they were.

Although truth to be told, that part was not the one that bothered me so much.

I mean yes, it was SOMEWHAT annoying, I’m not going to lie……

But more than being angry I was still in dismay over what happened. That is basically all that I had to say about it.

If I had to think about it, I would say that the reason why I was so angry was because technically both our groups were the C Rank at the Adventurers’ Guild, which would put us on the same level. And that did not sit well with me. Not even a single bit.

「Oh Rein! You are acting like such an adult right now!」

「Just so you know, if it was all on me, I would have roasted those two alive a long time ago, not even bothering with the possible consequences.」

「But if that is not the case here, then what is it that you are so angry about?」

The answer to that was very simple.

Thuis whole farce almost ended up in us failing the assigned request.

That was the thing that I was so angry about.

Let me tell you this right here and right now, I could not possibly care less about the fact that the people might start thinking less and less about the Adventurers in general.

I’m not really interested in that matter. Like, not at all.

In the first place, it was not like I was ever even remotely interested in using my position and status as an Adventurer to acquire fame to my name, but……

As long as I have a group of people I can count on and trust in the time of need, I’m more than satisfied with what I have to my name.

But I guess I digress.

Anyways, what worries me the most here is the fact that the request might be marked as failed if things were to go really wrong.

In this case, that would be the result of us letting the poachers get away to freedom after we already had them in our custody.

Now, what happens when the request is marked as failed?

Obviously, you are not going to be paid for all of your efforts.

Heck, in some cases, you might even be charged a penalty for failing.

But that’s beside the point. It’s actually a very minor issue.

The main problem would be that poachers would still be out there, and we wouldn’t be able to stop the population of the Horn Wolves from dwindling even more.

So their declining population would have become all our fault……

Worst case scenario, the population of the Horn Wolves could have declined completely, and their entire species could have gone extinct because of that. All because of a stupid quarrel between the two groups of Adventurers.

If that was to happen, I don’t know if I could even look at myself in the mirror.

「I see…… So, that’s how much you were worried about the Horn Wolves, huh, Rein?」

「Normally, people would be more concerned about the fact that they have failed a request and that they might need to pay a penalty for that…… but I guess that this type of behavior is typical of you, Rein. As one might expect.」
