Cecil also lived in San Teresa, so she had heard countless weird stories from Semanians. On the other hand, she herself had seen bodies that had been dead for a long time come back to life and start attacking people by sucking on their blood. As a professional doctor she had her own beliefs, but there was nothing she could do about it after being attacked by a vampire herself.

And it was true that letting her common sense come out and tell her that it was impossible, and that magic couldn’t exist, would not get her anywhere with the current situation.

Tilarna kept using the notepad while trapped inside Kuroi’s body, and she sluggishly managed to explain the situation to Cecil. It was an extremely dull method, but it was the best she could do.

Just like the mail she had received earlier said, some kind of magic had switched Tilarna and Kuroi’s souls, which meant that the one inside Tilarna’s body at the moment was Kuroi…

「By the way, where is Tilarna— or I guess it would be better to ask where your body is」

“shes sleeping inside”

Tilarna (the cat) typed on her phone. Apparently she was in Kei’s bedroom. Cecil was about to go check up on her, but then Tilarna (the cat) stood in her way

「Nya!!」

“wait”

「What happened? I’m getting worried」

“shes in a horrible state basically naked and its embarrasing”

Typed Tilarna (the cat) who then lowered her head.

「Now is not the time to be worrying about something like that. You changed souls with a completely different species. Your physical buildup is completely different, so obviously you’re going to feel sick…」

Cecil couldn’t even imagine how the magic she was talking about actually worked. However, she knew that it wasn’t just the soul what controlled the body (particularly the cerebral movements). Aside from a person’s conscience, the brain also served an important function in controlling a body’s internal organs. What about the parasympathetic system? How else would she control her body temperature or hormone balance? Cats had organs that humans didn’t and vice versa, humans had organs that cats didn’t.

She had to take Tilarna and Kuroi to the hospital immediately, and monitor everything about them thoroughly. She would also need the assistance of a doctor and a veterinarian.

“i dont feel bad though”

Typed Tilarna (the cat).

“i can now perceive smells sounds and lights that i couldnt before but aside from it being strange im okay”

「How long has it been since you became like this?」

Tilarna then cast a glance at the wall clock that had fallen on the floor.

“Eight hours”

Eight hours? If after that much time they still weren’t feeling unwell, then it was safe to assume that they had few issues controlling their new bodies.

It was hard to predict what a longer period of time would end up doing to them.

「Okay. But I am still going to check up on your body」
「Unya?!」

The black cat raised her voice in protest.

「I know that it’s embarrassing, but it’s almost as if you were sick, right? And on top of that. I think you called me because you knew that it would be way worse if it was Kei who saw you, right?」
「Nya…」
「Hey Tilarna, you know what I do for a living, right? I’m completely used to seeing the filthiest parts of human bodies, so I’m not affected by it anymore. I won’t make fun of you at all for having your body completely naked or even for wetting yourself. It wouldn’t even be your fault in the first place」

The black cat trembled as Cecil mentioned bodily fluids. It was a gesture similar to that of someone being whipped violently.

「Nya… nya… nya…」

Tilarna (the cat) looked down and tears of embarrassment started dripping out of her eyes.

Huh, so cats can cry. I didn’t know that.

“are you seriously not going to make fun of me?”

「Of course. In any case, leave it to me.」

“do you promise for real?”

Tilarna (the cat) was communicating by writing, so talking like that was considerably inconvenient. However, she was probably worried enough that she still felt like writing even further. Cecil gently caressed a dejected Tilarna’s back.

「It’s alright. We’ll work this out together」

“sorry”

Tilarna sighed deeply as she kept writing.

Alright then. She had finally managed to convince her.

Cecil headed straight to the back bedroom but right then

「Nyaa!!」

Tilarna (the cat) had apparently suddenly remembered something, the muscles in her back all contracted and she screamed at Cecil with an agitated “Meow!”

「What happened?」

“oh no i forgot to tell you to retrieve the crossbow”
「The crossbow?」
“its the tool that cast this mildi on me and its right outside”
「Right outside?」
“inside the garbage container”
「The garbage container?」
“kei mistook it for trash and threw it away and the garbage men are going”
「The garbage men?」
“to come soon”

The black cat clumsily typed in the characters with its hands (paws?), and right then a roaring sound could be heard from outside the window. They didn’t even have to look at it. That sound of a diesel engine, and the rustling of thousands of small pieces of junk could only be…

「The garbage men? Are you worried about them picking up the trash?」
“very”

Tilarna hastily pressed the keys while completely losing her calm.

“hurry i cant go back without that crossbow”
「Ah…!」

Cecil finally understood the situation, so she covered her mouth in surprise. The item that had cast the magic on her and got her into this situation— it had somehow been mistaken for garbage and thrown into the container outside.

「You can’t go back without it?」
“i dont know but please dont throw it away”
「Wa- wait right here. I’ll be right bick. Be a good girl okay?」

Cecil rushed out of the room, when all of a sudden, a loud noise came from inside. She stopped dead on her tracks and turned around. The door opened and out of it came Tilarna crawling on all fours.

「Eh…?」

No, that was actually Kuroi’s soul in Tilarna’s body. She was wearing a loose camisole, and her lower half was completely naked. She was looking directly at her with her big round pupils. She was probably still half awake after being woken up. The confused and disheveled blonde had a certain aimless charm to her.

This is…

She had a wild and filthy appearance, almost as if— as if she was a girl raised by tigers deep in the Indian jungles, and had just been found. Yet despite her appearance, she was surprisingly beautiful and sexy.

Cecil was just another average heterosexual person, and she had no particular interest in women, but she still had to swallow her own spit in astonishment.

As she was still recovering from her astonishment, Tilarna (the cat) kept trying to get her attention by meowing loudly at her feet.

Perhaps she was trying to rush her out.

「Ce—」

Tilarna (the body) raised her voice

「Huh?」
「Ce—… Ce—… Ce!」

Was she trying to say Cecil’s name?

「Kuroi? You’re Kuroi, right? Alright, let’s see… please stay there. I’m in a rush so uh—…」
「Ce—!」

She smiled and half closed her eyes, and then Tilarna (the body) jumped right into her. Kuroi probably just wanted to jump lightly at Cecil and get some attention. However, this time it was the body of a short hundred pound girl that had come crashing into her with the excitement of a cat. Cecil could not avoid her, and she was pushed down.

「Ah…」

And upon her falling to the floor, the back of her head came down quickly and hit the table with force. She felt a strong blow and intense pain. Her sight went pitch black, and she started seeing some flashing white lights in the distance.

This is not good. I need to get away from this girl and recover the trash before the garbage truck…

「Ce…?」

A few seconds passed, and Cecil could feel her consciousness drifting away.

Tilarna (the body) kept staring at Cecil blankly, while her face kept getting closer. Kuroi (the body) kept meowing loudly somewhere far off in the distance.

Ah, this is bad. I’m sorry. Come to think of it, I didn’t have breakfast today, huh…

The very last thing she could feel before passing out was Tilarna (the body) seemingly worried about her and licking her face over and over again.

Since it was still before noon, only Bob the bartender was in O’Neill’s Seven Miles shop to greet Matoba.

「I think he’s more likely to still be at his apartment」

Said Bob, who had just arrived from bringing in a new alcohol stock.

「So he’s still sleeping?」
「Probably. They threw a big party last night」

Which meant that he would also not be answering any calls or texts for the time being. Matoba started ranting as he walked by his car and headed to O’Neill’s apartment two blocks away.

On his way there, he passed by Charlie, a guy he recognized. He was an old man Matoba always saw when he came to this part of town. He seemed to constantly be drinking and permanently wasted.

「Hey Matoba. Working hard early in the morning, huh?」
「It’s noon already. Hey, you still drinking old man?」
「Well I’m always drinking. Where is that young girl you always carry with you? Did she dump you already?」
「She was being annoying so I let her sleep in today. Well, see ya」

Speaking of which, he just left Tilarna at home and hadn’t heard anything from her since then. He’d try giving her a call later.

He kept telling himself that she must have caught some kind of Semanian disease, but perhaps leaving her all alone to fend for herself was a mistake.

Which by the way, that behavior of hers that morning had been— pretty bad. It’s not like he would get all carried away at the sight of some half naked girl clinging over to him, like he was a teenager or anything. It was just that her behavior reminded him of a cat or a dog in their mating season grinding against their owner’s legs, but he felt profoundly troubled by the fact that it had been Tilarna.

How awkward.

He was still half asleep when it happened, so in all honesty, he had to admit that at first it felt somewhat nice. Maybe it would’ve gone on further if the other person had been any other woman.

In any case, he had to go to O’Neill’s.

The apartment he was going to had a brick outer wall, and faced directly to a main street. The building looked run down, almost as if the proprietary company had been cutting down on their budget for a while, or as if it had not been properly maintained in ten years. He pressed O’Neill’s apartment number on the intercom. He tried it three times but still received no reply.

「… fuck’s sake」

He kept insisting, and finally someone answered on his sixth try.

「Ah… shut the fuck up. What?」

Answered the hoarse voice of a man. It was probably O’Neill’s bodyguard Kenny. His voice was usually intimidating and rough when he was working, but right now it sounded almost weak.

「It’s Matoba. Is O’Neill there?」
「Ah, the boss? Eh… well… I’m sure he was here before falling asleep…」
「In any case just open up」
「Yeah sorry. My head hurts like hell…」
