When I was alone with Edi, we prepared medicinal tea, baked sweets, and a light meal that could be eaten with one hand. It was real afternoon tea! A sweet smell filled the room and my mind naturally relaxed.
「The macarons were good, but these cookies are delicious as well! They’re a bit salty and easy to eat.」
「The dough has cheese kneaded into it. Edi also prefers eats these, but if it suits your taste, young medium, I am very honored.」
The medium’s appearance as he stuffed his mouth with cheese cookies was cute, a bit like a small animal. Looking sideways at the medium, the other members were each bringing the medicinal tea to their mouths.
「Filmina, your skills improved again, didn’t they? This medicinal herb tea has a more distinct scent than the last time you poured some for us.」
「Thank you very much. However, that is probably because Edi assisted me. Right, Edi?」
「Uhh, who knows.」 I felt overjoyed inside to receive the princess’ gracious praise. I looked at the man but he seemed indifferent and was sipping his tea. It’s frustrating that the man’s skills are above mine when it comes to brewing tea. I can now brew it to the level where I don’t get any complaints from him and can brag to others about my brewing skills, but that doesn’t equate to me being perfect at it. Today, the man brewed herbal tea with the best timing without even using the hourglass, which made me realize that I still have a lot to learn.
The man didn’t say anything more than that. The princess looked at him in a slightly fed up manner and then slightly shrugged her shoulders and proceeded to carry a small sandwich elegantly into her mouth. It seems like the taste suited her preference and her eyes softened into a kind expression. It’s an expression suitable for a girl of her age. It seems like the taste has made her relax quite a lot. Yay! I clenched my fist in triumph in my imagination and took a look at the youth Heinrich. He was silently drinking the tea and it seemed like he didn’t have anything to say. He was just repeating the process of taking a glance at the princess and looking away from time to time with his one eye. He was reacting in a way as if the princess was a stranger that he’s meeting for the first time. Is it that peculiar that the princess is so relaxed? To be honest, I do think that the princess’s expressions were those of royalty since the day she had left the royal capital and till today. Maybe it was an obvious thing to see the princess like that. So, it’s possible that the youth is having a hard time processing what he’s witnessing. If that’s the case, then I’d love to slap that calm face of his― I was thinking of things like these and was about to pour tea into the man’s empty teacup when I heard a noise outside the door. There’s a knight guarding us and a female attendant waiting outside the door. I stopped moving and wondered what could it be and the medium, munching on the cookies, tilted his head in wonder. The princess’ beautiful eyebrows frowned and the man summoned his usual staff out of nowhere and Heinrich took out his rapier and stood up. The calm and peaceful atmosphere immediately turned tense. Both the man and Heinrich held their weapons and with a loud noise, the door burst open.
「Wha! What’s happening!?」
The medium widened his eyes and dropped the teacup from his hand. The teacup that hit the floor and shattered into many pieces with a loud crank was of the best quality brought from the royal capital, but it isn’t the time to worry about something trivial as that. A band of people with their faces covered with turban rushed in with loud footsteps.
「Filmina-dono. I’ll take care of the princess and you can take care of the medium.」
「Go…got it!」
I nodded to Heinrich reflexively. I don’t understand what’s happening but I know one thing that the situation we are in is distressing. I stood up from the chair and pulled the medium who was frozen on the chair towards me. I hugged him and ran towards the wall so that nobody could attack from behind. Copper red eyes swaying with anxiety were looking up at me.
「It’s all ok, honourable medium…Snow-sama. Since Edi and Heinrich-sama are here.」
「I…I’ll help them too.」
「You don’t need to worry about it. The medium-dono can stay behind me with Filmina.」
The man stopped the medium who was trying to escape from my arms with a few words and then used his long staff like a club and made people attacking him one after another faint. The man is a magician by profession and I have always thought of the staff as something needed to use magic but I’ve slightly started to lose confidence in the way I had perceived things previously. But it isn’t the time to be thinking about it. All of the men who had intruded the room seem to be skilled at combat since I see the attendant and the knight laying ahead of my eyes at the other side of the door. Are they after the medium? I tightened my arm around the medium and looked around a bit late, but I realized something. No, the motive behind this assault isn’t the medium. They are after the princess and to prove my point the amount of assailants coming towards us is minuscule and most of them are going towards the princess and towards the youth Heinrich who is protecting the princess pointing their crescent swords towards them. The moment he started screaming, the still air inside the room turned into a gust. Small birds made of the wind materialized and started rampaging inside the room chirping noisily. The birds were not only trying to attack the assailants but they were also aiming for the valuables in the room along with, me, who was carrying the medium, the man, who was protecting the medium, and the princess, and the youth Heinrich. I heard a loud click of the tongue.
「No! Please calm down my dear friend!」
「Honourable Medium!?」
The medium who was shaking in my arms probably out of fear suddenly started screaming anxiously. The man briefly muttered something in the magical language and after he was done, an invisible force-field surrounded me and the princess. Seems like the man had put a barrier around us. That’s a good thing but that didn’t calm down the birds, instead, they started to go berserk, the assailants although being attacked by the birds made from wind still pointed their blades towards the princess.
「My friend, my friend, stop, don’t do it!」
The medium’s desperate plea wasn’t reaching the birds― the wind spirits. They were going on a rampage to protect the medium that they loved. The birds made from the wind, in their whirling chirps, I heard an annoying sound of metals clashing into each other. It seems like the youth Heinrich is doing well but there was a slight momentary opening on his right and the assailant aimed for it and swung his crescent blade at the princess.
「Princess!」
I raised my voice and screamed, the one to react to it first was the youth, Heinrich. Without any hesitation, he came between the sword swung towards the princess. The silver edge cut the youth’s right half of the face. Bright red blood scattered in the air, and his eyepatch was sliced and fell to the ground. Heinrich bled from the face, which was cut horizontally, and fell on his knee. Even in such a situation, his rapier was pointed at the assailant trying to assault the princess. The princess who was behind the youth slowly lifted her head up. The thick silver veil of her eyelashes got lifted up revealing her big amber eyes and the colour of her eyes turned into that of gold.
「How dare you…..!」
Her fluttering silver hair filled with air and it expanded. She pointed her white fingertip towards the assailants. The air suddenly started vibrating. The princess glared at the assailants with her golden eyes as they were unable to move due to individual pressure, her light pink, petal-like lips were about to open, but at that moment Heinrich spoke in a calm tone not suited for the current situation.
「Don’t do it, princess.」
He still held the rapier and said that without looking back at the princess. He continued gently as if he was talking to his lover.
「Don’t lose yourself for someone like me.」
Upon hearing those words the princess gasped. The golden glare in her eyes faded away and at the same time, the heavy pressure in the air started fading away.
