If I had to tell the result of what happened after that, then let me inform you beforehand that the engagement between the medium and the princess was cancelled. It isn’t even something worth beginning to explain, because the outcome was obvious from everything that had happened during that ceremony. If we were to look at that fact, the reality of the engagement getting cancelled then it could be said that the pro-medium extremist group had won, but in reality things don’t work like that.
The higher ups of the town took notice of the incident and started dissecting the extremist organization that they had ignored for so long. I want to bash them for being so slow. Even if they told me with bitter expression that the organization had people of high ranking that couldn’t be messed with and that it wasn’t something that could be helped, it isn’t something I could easily agree with. A certain group of people from the town are depicted as evil, that being the extremist faction, but the pacifist faction who ignored their atrocities is also responsible. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the entire town was to be punished due to the incident. But, the medium and the princess stopped that from happening. The medium knelt before the princess who had just recovered from the side effects of the secret potion without any hesitation and pleaded that all fault was upon him and to forgive the town and take his head instead. The people of the town who witnessed it started to panic and some people among them had even started to cry. The princess looked at such people and said, 「I’ll forgive. 」
Even if it is the beloved child of the spirituals, a crime is a crime and its price needs to be paid. But, the princess forgave. If the medium understands his own value, his position, his responsibility and upon understanding all that if he is willing to take the burden of the crime then he should be allowed to live and pay for the crime.
Obviously, the extremists who were the perpetrators of this incident were driven out of their respective positions, the high ranking officials who the pacifists couldn’t get rid of were not an exception. The town was now officially being ruled by the pacifist faction. The oath of then being obeying the royal family till the end of times was taken by them and was noted down by the head magician of the royal court in the magical language so none could break the oath.
「Well, one should have some sort of authority, all though it is ironic coming from me.」
「Couldn’t agree more.」
The princess muttered while sitting on the bed drinking the tisane and the man nodded deeply and agreed. For the first time being in their presence since the incident, I examined the princess’ health. The princess, who was slowly drinking the tisane, looked healthy. Her face wasn’t pale and her expression was calm. But, it wasn’t like I wasn’t worried anymore, the princess noticed me, who was doing nothing but looking at her face. She gave a short smile and looked up at our faces.
「Filmina, Agedius. Let me properly show some gratitude, thank you.」
The man and I looked at each other upon hearing her cheerful words and I tilted my head.
「What is that thank you for? If I may ask.」
「Regarding this―no, including this time, it is for everything till now, is it wrong to say it like that?」
While I couldn’t take my eyes off her mischievous smile the man looked back at the door. Has somebody come? I followed the man’s gaze and looked back and within seconds the door opened.
「Excuse me, princess.」
It was the youth Heinrich who had arrived. Heinrich signalled the man with his eyes and the man nodded to that and held my hand.
「Princess. Filmina and I’ll be taking the leave now. Try taking care of your health.」
「I don’t need you to tell me that. I’ll get well in no time and have tea with Filmina.」
「E, Edi, please wait! I’m sorry princess but I’ll be taking a leave.」
Princess waved her hand at me, who was being taken out of the room by the man. That was the last of what I saw, the man and I started walking together across the hallway after that. It bothered me a little to let the princess and Heinrich be together in the room alone, but if the princess is fine with it then it isn’t something I should interfere in. I’ll go with that. If not, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from hitting the youth’s face.
「Edi, can you ask one thing?」
「What is it?」
「Why did Snow-sama’s ‘wish’ reach that water spirit? I understand that Snow-sama has power similar to the princess but is it possible to stop such a rampage with just that?」
It has been bothering me, even though the spirits would happily comply with the medium’s wish but if we were to ponder upon it carefully wouldn’t it want to rebel against the medium’s wish since he had been letting the spirit do as it pleased for so long?
The man shrugged his shoulders to my uncertainty saying 「That isn’t even something to ponder upon.」 It was evident from his reaction that he thought it was obvious for everyone what happened during that incident. Although I don’t think I have asked something weird as the man is making it seem.
「The thing that holds an importance in this is name. Not a concept known as the medium but an individual known as Snow, the spirit noticed him as an individual who has for the first time confronted it and accepted him as a separate entity from them. That’s how it granted his wish, although I had to clean his mess caused by lack of proper wording.」 The man said it in a somewhat fed up tone and let out a sigh and I couldn’t help myself from smiling wryly. It’s a bit mean to say something like “cleaning the mess” but considering how Edi has been feeling since that incident during the ceremony, being treated as a champion in the Azure Desert and being praised everywhere he goes, it couldn’t be helped if he says things in such a manner.
「As a result, you becoming the medium’s godparent saved us. But, the spirit was lending its power to the medium since it thought of the medium as its kind. So its response towards an individual known as Snow wouldn’t be the same as their response towards the medium. Even though he is the beloved child of the spirituals, he may end up only being able to use magic even lower than a third grade wizard. That added more to the reason for the engagement being cancelled. Since there is no use for a beloved child of a spirit if he can’t harness the power of the spirits.」
「Edi, that’s going too f……」
「Filmina! Agedilus!」
I was going to continue speaking but a voice overlapped on my voice, it was a young voice. I looked towards the direction from which the voice came from and saw the medium who was coming running towards us with his iridescent coloured hair fluttering in the air. He was being followed by a female attendant and a masculine-looking girl who were hastily following him, but the medium seemed as if he didn’t even care about such a thing and stood in front of Edi and I.
「I apologize deeply for the actions of the people of my town. It brings me joy from the bottom of the heart that the princess is safe and sound.」
After apologizing to us the medium bowed deeply. The attendant and the guard who finally caught up to the medium stood behind him and were looking at the medium bowing down with a complicated look on their faces. They had probably never expected to see this boy to apologize in such a manner. It was common knowledge that the medium was allowed not to bow down and apologize even if it was his fault but it isn’t something that is allowed in case of a boy known as Snow.
「I am who I am. I would like to confront spirits from now on but not as the medium, but as an individual known as Snow.」
The resolve that was put into those words was pure white and beautiful just like the snow. It was his resolve showing that he wouldn’t spend his life just being respected and honoured as the medium but to spend his life as an individual, as Snow. Even if his future, the path he has chosen to go on is filled with a series of hardships I would like to believe that it’d be filled with light and hope along the hardships.
