Having gotten used to our life in the Schtorenvihein region, I resigned to the peaceful days I spent with that man. There had been no news from the Royal Capital. Perhaps some may have reached that man or the Hero, but it seemed that everyone was being considerate of me. No one talked about anything regarding the Royal Capital in front of me on purpose.
I was certainly thankful for their consideration, but being someone who’s supposed to be at the centre of the events, it was also strange that I wasn’t being told anything. When I casually brought up the topic with that man, he wouldn’t say anything other than「Don’t worry about it」. Oh, another thing he said was that 「It’d be a bad influence for the child」. Is it really that bad an influence for the child? I wanted to ask in response, but I also understood that there must be a good reason why he couldn’t tell me, so I wasn’t able to ask anything more. The only thing I could do right now was to pray that the precious people that we left in the Royal Capital were alright, and that the day we could return to the Royal Capital would come as soon as possible.
Sigh, I was so irritated at myself for being so powerless. As I sighed, I moved the knitting needle that my lady-in-waiting had prepared for me. As I instinctively sighed, my lady-in-waiting, Daphne, the person who took care of me in the Schtorenvihein region, smiled wryly. 「Dear dear」
「Madam Filmina. If you sigh too much, you’re going to let your happiness escape, you know? It’ll be bad for the baby in your bell as well. Please tell me about any worries you have, no matter how insignificant. I probably cannot beat your wet nurse who’s in the Royal Capital, but I’ll be one Madam Filmina’s side no matter what. 」
「Thank you, Daphne. That’s very reassuring.」
「Of course. And more than that, Madam Filmina, you don’t just have me. You also have the baby in your belly. 」
「Hehe, you’re right.」
She’s right. I wasn’t alone. I didn’t just have my lady-in-waiting. I had the man I called my husband, and even our good friend, the Hero. And of course the precious people I left in the Royal Capital. And more than anything, just as the lady-in-waiting said, I had this child.
I placed the knitting needle on my knees and softly caressed my belly. I still couldn’t feel anything, but without a doubt, the child I had with that man was here. I couldn’t just stand around trembling from the anxiety. I had to become stronger. I thought to myself yet again. Hehe. Watching me like that, the lady-in-waiting giggled.
「Sir Agedilus can’t be careless either, can he?」
「What?」
What did she mean by that? As I blinked my eyes in confusion, my lady-in-waiting nodded with an all-knowing look.
「When a woman becomes a mother, her priorities change.」
「Priorities……?」
I tilted my head at the unexpected word. Seeing my response, my lady-in-waiting responded with a gentle smile.
「Mothers tend to choose the role of being a mother rather than a woman, and hence choose their child over their husbands……that’s just how things are. 」
「Is that really how it is?」
「Of course. It is the child that you shared your blood with and gave birth to after so much pain. It is only natural. But it is different for the husbands. Husbands are beings that tend to prioritize being a man over a husband. Shouldn’t you be careful of that as well, Madam Filmina?」
I still remember it myself. My lady-in-waiting continued. It was a line that sounded embedded with meaning. I see, I nodded once in response.
That may certainly be true. I didn’t not agree. My mother was definitely a person who prioritized my brother and I over my father. Of course, she was also someone who would always perfectly support my father after that, and make my father fall in love with her all over again. But there was no doubt that she was a person who cared very much for us, her children.
What about my father? I had no memory of myself ever being compared to my mother. Rather, I think I was probably treated the same way as my mother, with him calling us things like butterflies or flowers. My father was someone who loved his family without any distinction. Sometimes that got a bit annoying……or should I say, his expression of love got a bit too heavy, but one could also say that it was another one of his charms.
Those were my parents, who I respected and loved very much. But they probably wouldn’t make for very good references. Mauve that was why. My lady-in-waiting’s words were mysteriously very convincing. Maybe that was how it worked for the majority of people. If so, would that mean that I would put the baby before that man? Would that man start getting jealous of our child? Hm. The scary thing was that I couldn’t say for sure that he wouldn’t.
I went deep into thought as I continued to caress my belly. Suddenly, the door was knocked on three times.
My lady-in-waiting who was waiting at the side quickly opened the door. There stood my husband, who looked calm as usual, as well as the Hero, who looked completely exhausted.
「Edi, Sir Yuri, good work for today/」
They should have been practicing their swordsmanship today as well. Everyday after lunch, that man would pull the Hero to the courtyard, mercilessly and without pity. That scene was probably one that everyone had gotten used to seeing in the Schtorenvihein mansion. Staggering, the Hero entered the room and collapsed onto the sofa with a thud.
「I’m so tired. Agedilus really wouldn’t show me any mercy at all」
「You’re just slacking, aren’t you?」
「My my」
Laughing loudly at the Hero, who just lay on the sofa, as if to say he just couldn’t stand up anymore, that man naturally sat down beside me. My lady-in-waiting briskly prepared the tea as she giggled, amused.
「Young Master, it’s a rare chance. Please allow Sir Agedilus to do whatever he wants with you」
「Daphne even you? Don’t say the same things as my mother……」
Hearing the Hero lament in a way that sounded like he was about to cry, my lady-in-waiting and I looked at each other and laughed. The man beside me grunted with a hmph and just shrugged his shoulders. Based on how he was acting, there was probably more where the hero’s troubles came from. My condolences. I thought as I looked at the Hero. At the same time I started to clear up my knitting needles. Finally seeming to have regained his strength, the Hero sluggishly propped his body up and tilted his head.
「Knitting huh? What are you making?」
「I was thinking of a lap robe for your mother. It’s not going to be anything big, but I was thinking that it’d be nice to make something that could warm her legs up a little. 」
The Hero’s mother had told me herself that she had bad legs when we first met. But she was a dauntless, lovely lady who never made anyone think that that was a handicap for her. She took in someone as troublesome as me without showing a hint of annoyance. I wanted to at least thank her somehow. Incidentally, once I was done with this, I was thinking that it’d be nice if I could make something for the Hero’s father, the owner of the land.
Hearing my answer, a joyful smile appeared on the Hero’s dignified face.
「Wow, thank you so much. I’m sure my mother will be very happy.」
「Would you like me to knit something for you as well, Sir Yuri? If you have any requests you don’t need to hold back, you can just……」
Tell me. Is what I tried to continue with. That was when. Bang! The door was opened with a loud bang. It was only natural that everyone in the room looked towards the door, wondering what it was about.
「Young Master, this is bad!」
The person who had come charging into the room was the Schtorenvihein household butler. He came in out of breath and appeared quite flustered. The man who sat beside me suddenly stood up and glared outside the window.
「Edi?」
Before I could even ask him what it was, the Hero had asked the butler.
「W-what happened, old man? Why are you so flustered?」
Calm down. The hero said as he rubbed his back. The butler shouted.
「T-ttttthe High Priest of the big temple has come bringing a large number of temple knights. He said to bring out SIr Agedilus and Madam Filmina……」
I wonder who the one who gasped at those words was. It didn’t matter who it was. It was the same thing no matter who did it.
The Hero wasn’t the only one who acted as though everything was fine. I was the same. The days that I had spent in the Schtorenvihein region were so peaceful, so gentle, and so fun. That was why I had completely forgotten. Disasters always come just when you forget about them.
