Volume 5 Chapter 24: The Coming Moment
Early morning. I stood in the grasslands near the Spirit City.
Specifically, I was on a slightly elevated hill within the vast open plain, making it easy to keep a close eye on the surroundings.
In this area, a large number of containers filled with magical stones were placed, forming a circular pattern with equal spacing between each.
This was the bait meant to lure out the Ouroboros.
…Ouroboros had sustained injuries from Gale’s attack, and to recover, it had to consume mana stored within its body.
And dragons that had to expend mana, usually have a heightened appetite.
…This was our chance.
Of course, we couldn’t know which bait the Ouroboros would bite onto.
If we placed too many magical stones in one area, it might raise suspicion.
So, generally, each container held the same amount.
Additionally, by spacing the containers too closely, it would also make it suspicious, so they were spread out across a wide area.
…I had a clear view of the area, allowing me to keep watch.
Nearby the containers, there were personnel stationed to alert us immediately if they spotted any signs of Ouroboros’ appearance.
This was the protocol.
「That’s a clever setup, like fishing for prey.」
In the center of the circle, Gale, who had been helping me monitor the surroundings, spoke.
「The prey is pretty large for fishing, though.」
「…Now, the only question is when will it show up, right? Master?」
「Yeah. Ouroboros, among the ancient beasts, is quite loyal to its hunger. With this much bait, it might be suspicious at first, but it won’t be able to resist.」
The memories of our previous encounter with Ouroboros were still vivid in my mind.
A colossal dragon. Its primal nature gives it strength, and that primal nature is also what allows us to bait it. Who would’ve thought we’d cross paths again in this way after the war had ended?

Far off, I heard that voice—a shout from someone stationed farther away.

The head of a dragon emerged in the distance, so enormous that it was clearly recognizable even from more than a kilometer away.
