Chapter 182

Located in a corner of the royal capital Aleklaftia, where the middle class officials and lower ranking nobles live, is the family home of Arkrest Kingdom’s most powerful mage, Merle Marle Azar.

It’s not as if there were any ancestors in Merle’s family that achieved any outstanding military accomplishments, and it was a family line that shouldn’t have been able to give birth to a child with extraordinary talent such as Merle.

Her parents weren’t particularly disadvantaged, and they were remembered by their superiors and colleagues as serious middle class officials diligently fulfilling their duties in the royal palace, and their place of residence was a size befitting their status.

But compared to the generations before her parents, Merle is the best mage among all mages, and she was selected to work for the Royal Military’s Magic Division, which is supervised directly by the king himself.

Naturally, her reception was exceptional, as she is paid highly and she possessed enough fighting ability to influence the strategies of the kingdom.

If she wanted to, she could have lived in a much more luxurious mansion with better living conditions than her current house, but Merle thought it would be troublesome to leave the house that she was born and raised in, so she has continued to live at home with her parents and several of their servants.

Even though Merle has become monstrously strong, whose name is known widely throughout the surrounding countries, her parents are still selfless and desire to only live the way they always did before, so for now, there is no need for any change in Merle’s life.

On the morning of that day, Merle was lying on the bed in her room that she’s had since childhood, while mumbling gibberish in her sleep, before she slowly and lazily woke up.

The morning sun was shining through gaps in the anti-spying curtains hanging at her window, landing on Merle’s face, which must have been what woke her up.

Merle squirmed about, making meaningless movements similar to a puppy or kitten waking up, then slowly got off the bed like an elderly person.

On the floor of the room, which was decently spacious, a number of clothes she had taken off were scattered across the floor haphazardly, along with several empty liquor bottles, and grimoires with bookmarks tucked into their pages.

It wasn’t weird for Merle to be reading such high level grimoires, but the way she treats them so messily is very much like her.

They’ve been sealed to prevent them from getting out of control in the house, but any ordinary mage would probably be surprised and start foaming at the mouth just from seeing it.

「Uuh~wah~」

Merle’s light blue hair was sticking up and tangled everywhere, and she scratched her collarbone and her head with her right hand, which was a rather unseemly gesture for a young woman of her age to make, even if no one was looking.

Merle, her eyes and head still foggy with sleepiness, reached her hand out toward her desk, where a mountain of grimoires and magazines about clothing and hairstyles that are fashionable in the royal capital, were piled high.

There was still a slice of toast leftover from last night sitting on a large ceramic plate, and she unconsciously reached for it, attracted by the scent of food.

As she stretched out her hand while mumbling to herself, it got caught on the plate with the toast that had cheese, sliced tomatoes, and chopped beef on it, which had completely hardened overnight, and it all fell off the desk and onto the floor.

Just a split second before the toast that her mother had made for her would have made contact with the floor, it floated up and slowly rose, landing safely in Merle’s right hand.

「Whew, that was close. Mom would get mad at me if I wasted food too」

It seems Merle’s consciousness was awakened at the last second by the emergency situation of the toast falling, and she used levitation magic on the toast in an instant.

The toast had gotten cold already, but Merle warmed it up in her hands. The cheese started to melt again, and the smell of the meat’s grease started to waft in the air.

She sank her teeth into the now heated toast, and then took a drink from a bottle of fruit wine, which was still about a third full, letting the chewed toast pass down her throat.

If a third party had been there to witness the scene from when Merle had woken up until now, they would recognize that the reason why such an amazing Arc Witch like her has had such bad luck with men up until now, was partly due to her own fault.

「Hah, I’ve come back to life~」

Merle finished off the toast and the wine, and after she wiped her mouth with the towel that was draped on the back of her chair, she extended her arms straight up and stretched her body while making a sweet, nasally sound with her voice.

「Mmmm, haaaah, I’m on standby at the palace again today. I don’t think there will be anyone who will do something like Abyss Dawn did, but I guess it can’t be helped」

Merle gave a big yawn, which smelled of the fruit wine, but just when she was about to change her clothes, she heard the groan of a drunkard behind her, suffering from a hangover.

If this had been the voice of a man, it would have shocked everyone who knew what kind of person Merle was really like, but the owner of the voice was a woman.

「Ahhh, my head hurts… Mer-chan, can’t you use some detoxification magic on me?」

The voice belonged to Hamel, who had been kicked off the bed by Merle in the middle of the night, and she was now lying on the floor, her face clear of any makeup.

Since she had some time off from her position as a court jester, she had been drinking the night away with Merle yesterday.

In response to Hamel groaning vulgarly, Merle just sighed and grumbled to herself as she casted the detoxification magic.

「Whew, your detoxification magic always takes effect so fast, every time. The inside of my head is all crisp and refreshed now」

Hamel stood up, with the color returning to her face and a smile rising, and then she moved her joints around, getting rid of the stiffness in them that had come from sleeping on the floor all night.

With all the alcohol in her body detoxified by Merle, Hamel had returned to normal, and then she wrinkled her nose at the smell of alcohol pervading the room.

Hamel thought to herself that two single women drinking together all night and greeting the morning while reeking of alcohol was a very strange thing in various ways.

Hamel herself was satisfied with her job as a court jester, and she had no particular wish to get married, which she didn’t mind, but for Merle, who wishes to get married, this situation must be pretty bad.

But even with that said, Merle herself has no self awareness of that, so she’s even more hopeless.

「It’s about time to clean up now, huh」

Merle looked around at the mess all over the floor, with stacks of grimoires and discarded underwear and clothes scattered everywhere, and a wry smile rose up to her lips.

It was obvious that even if she cleaned her room, it would return to this messy state after about five days anyway, but Merle thought she could still invite other people over in those five days, so it would still be fine as is.

She’s lived like that all this time, so she’s come to think that things are fine as they are, and that’s why her luck with men has always been catastrophic. Even the king has realized this, but Merle herself is completely unaware.

Hamel watched blankly as Merle used telekinetic magic to casually lift the things off the floor, and sort them roughly into different categories.

And then her gaze traveled down to the lines of Merle’s curves, from her butt to her waist, wrapped in her nightgown, and Hamel thought to herself that it was too bad, since Merle had such a nice body.

Speaking of that, Hamel suddenly remembered something, and then spoke without thinking.

Later, Hamel would say that it was a mistake for her to forget just how attached Merle was to the matter at hand.

「Oh, right, Merle, did you know?」

「About what?」

「Right now, Dran and his merry party of friends have come to the castle. They went with His Highness to the empire as part of his guard, and along their way home, they’ll be staying here for a bit. It seems like he’s brought back more girls with him again. Ahahaha, unlike you, Mer-chan, he’s really fortunate with meeting people of the opposite sex」

For Hamel, this was just some small talk, but for Merle, this was much more than that.

Dran’s merry group of friends are a group full of eccentric, weird, superhuman people, who are so full of talent, Merle couldn’t hope to win against them, even if she used her full power, which she usually keeps hidden.

As soon as Merle’s brain comprehended the words that came out of Hamel’s mouth, the clothes and grimoires that were floating around with her telekinesis flew around in every direction, and one of Merle’s underwear grazed Hamel’s left cheek.

「Hey, that’s dangerous!!」

「H-H-Ha-chan, is that, is that true? Dran and the others are really here? Dramina too?」

Merle gripped her best friend’s shoulders, and glared at her strongly, conveying that she wouldn’t forgive her if she was lying or joking about this.

Even Hamel, who has known Merle for a long time, was intimidated by the power in Merle’s eyes, the strongest mage in the human race.

Surprised by how hard Merle was gripping her, Hamel immediately remembered just how attached Merle was to Dran, and then she internally chided herself for speaking so carelessly.

「It’s true, it’s true, it’s really true! But shouldn’t they be returning to Galois about now? And anyway, they’re only staying at the royal castle because of their relationship with His Highness and His Majesty. Even if it’s you, you can’t just charge in so suddenly!」

If she wasn’t careful, Merle might actually be about to charge into the royal castle right now, even if she’s still in her nightgown, with her favorite staffs, Distall and Distall Magna summoned in her hands.

If it weren’t for Hamel’s words stopping her and nailing her in place, Merle would have probably used spatial transfer magic to go to the royal palace and show herself before Dran.

「O-Oh, nooo, I wouldn’t do that, you know? I-I really wouldn’t!」

As Merle’s gazed fluttered about, trying to hide her two Distall staffs behind her back even though they were impossible to hide, to anyone who saw her, she only looked like a fool trying to recklessly hide that she was lying.

Hamel decided that it must be bad for her to interact with Dran like this, but at the same time, she held some slight hope for Dran too.

For her best friend, who is rumored to have gained the greatest magical power in exchange for bad luck with men, Dran may very well be her last and only hope.
