Chapter 83
As I spoke with my siblings who had morphed into their human forms, I added that it would be best if we did not overdo our habitual teasing of Alexandra.
「Enough with the idle chatter. Now, on to the main topic of discussion. This probably won’t take long, but…」
It hardly seemed ideal to be talking on this desolate land with only the dry wind gusting against us. With this thought in mind, I channeled my magic into the ground and raised a few chairs with backrests and armrests for each of us. After that, I morphed the chairs into marble seats.
Even though these chairs were hard and uncomfortable to sit on, I was sure we few were not bothered by this aspect. Once these white marble seats were erected, everyone sat down.
「You’ve learned to be so much more considerate, Dragon.」
In response to Leviathan’s deep sigh, I answered dismissively.
「I’ve long been capable of that.」
Alexander, who was still grumbling softly, finally realized that no one would respond to her protests and eventually quietened down.
「Well, I only heard that Alexander tried to avenge me after I died. Did any other major events occur in the world after that? I’ve already met Caravis and Mairahl, but I’ve yet to ask them about their affairs. How were things from your perspectives?」
Even though I had been quite reckless in my past life, I had been a great obstacle to the evil gods and demons trying to overtake the world and devour living souls. To them, I was probably an even greater menace than the good gods of the celestial realm.
It was not hard to imagine that my death at the hands of humans had been a great opportunity for the evil spirits of the demon realm to sink their poisonous fangs into the earthly world.
「Those evil gods certainly tried to go on a rampage while Leviathan and I were trying to stop Alexander. Keios and Mairahl fought fiercely trying to stop them. The fighting was not contained within the celestial and demon realm. A large-scale proxy war even occurred on earth, leading to many deaths. Some of our comrades were eager to exact revenge alongside Alexander. However, others respected your will and temporarily descended from the skies to protect humans and many others from threats from the demon realm. As a result, we managed to put up a decent defense. Though, the underworld was probably fairly chaotic.」
Fumu… Did some of my comrades make up for my blunder? I owe them my greatest gratitude.
「Dragon, Dragon! Jormungand and I did our best on earth too!」
「Vritra, you did so? And Jormungand too? What a surprise. After all, I thought you’d leave earthly matters to the gods.」
「Hahaha. Well, this matter involves you. Besides, I heard that you were on fairly good terms with those warriors who killed you. I couldn’t help but be curious! Right, Jormungand?」
「Exactly. Those warriors were pretty troubled after they had slain you. Once they found out the reason for your death, they seemed pretty remorseful too.」
「Fumu… I see. I was also trying to give them a warning. Though, I’m even more curious now to know if they managed to live on well after that incident.」
For a moment, I tried to analyze my sudden eagerness about these warriors even after sixteen years. Perhaps this curiosity about their lives was due to my fateful meeting with their grandchildren, Christina and Headmaster Olivier.
In any case, their souls would have already entered the underworld and been led to the wheel of reincarnation. Regardless of how they had ended up, there was nothing I could do now.
「They were embroiled in a conflict that broke out after your death. It was a brutal battle between demi-humans and humans that no one had desired for.」
Jormungand related the flow of events succinctly, and I wondered if my worries had somehow turned into reality. After all, I had hoped that these formidable individuals would not be abandoned after they had been used in battle.
Vritra seemed to notice the doubtful expression on my face and continued recounting the past while pacing about.
「It’s as what Jormungand mentioned. Since these warriors were in a position to kill you, they were made to commit evil. As for the people who ordered your murder, they were either being manipulated by the evil gods or had their souls devoured. Once those warriors ascertained these possibilities, they defeated those being manipulated and thoroughly investigated the masterminds behind this affair. Only after that did they manage to stop a part of the war between humans.」
With these statements, Vritra had mentioned something significant. Those who had instigated the warriors to kill me had either been manipulated by the evil gods or had their souls devoured and replaced.
Based on Vritra’s words, the warriors had defeated those instigators. However, I was eager to know about the fates of those evil gods. The first thought that popped into my mind was that Alexander had eliminated those evil gods on behalf of those warriors.
「Ah, by the way, Dragon, I just remembered something.」
Vritra exclaimed as a sudden look of surprise colored her face. As she spoke, she tumbled about and even somersaulted in the air. As expected, Vritra was as excitable as always, and I knew it would be useless to ask her to calm down.
「What is it?」
「Somehow, before those warriors could crush those demons’ plans, a sacred beast started rampaging on earth. Though, Alexander was probably totally at home in all that havoc. Those warriors defeated the sacred beast, but it caught my attention. That beast had a scent and an aura that resembled you. It also felt a little similar to Caravis. Do you know anything about it?」
There were tons of sacred beasts who had run amok in the world. However, there was only one who possessed similarities to Caravis and me. This beast was no doubt Lenia, who had also been defeated by the warriors and reincarnated as a human—just like me. She was the sacred beast who had not been given a name by her creator. Lenia had challenged those warriors. and she, too, had been beaten by them.
Regret was evident in my tone as I shared what I knew.
「Oh. This is something I found out after I reincarnated as a human, but that’s a sacred beast Caravis created after obtaining a small fragment of my soul and its magic. She mixed that with her own blood to birth this beast. It was created to destroy me, but it failed to be as powerful as Caravis wanted it to be. Hence, it was shackled and abandoned on earth.」
「Huh. Well, Caravis loves you, but she really goes all out to crush you at times. You’re too nice to her! You said you found out about this after you reincarnated, so did you hear from Caravis? Besides, are you still friends with her?」
「I only met Caravis a few months ago, but I’ve been fairly strict with her so she won’t come up with any childish ideas for the time being. As for that sacred beast, I’ve met her. She was reincarnated as a human, just like me, and I’m now schoolmates with her at a Magic Academy.」
「Oh… Interesting. The kid who was killed by the same warriors who killed you reincarnated as a human, just like you. You two even met each other. But, wasn’t that sacred beast created to destroy you? Did she try to attack you out of the blue?」
When I had first met Lenia, she had been clueless about my identity. As a result, I had been both relieved and uneasy in my interactions with her. Though, this memory only served to stir feelings of nostalgia within me right now.
The image of Lenia, calling me her father so fondly, popped into my mind. As I thought about her, I continued chatting with Vritra and my other siblings who were keenly listening.
