Chapter 87

Perhaps the sun detested its spot in the heavens so much that its only reprieve was torturing such a beautiful existence. Why couldn’t it illuminate her like how it did with the seas, mountains, forests, flowers, and all living creatures on earth? Is the moon the only one who had the right to shine upon her existence without afflicting her?

Frankly, no one would be able to refute such statements. In fact, they would have pitied the sun and sympathized with its lamentations, dismay, and jealousy. After all, she would be breathtaking if she were ever to stand under the sun’s rays.

A long sword that seemed to belong in an antique shop was in her hands, and the name of this woman was Dramina.

She was the descendant of the oldest, purest, and most untainted pedigree–the bloodline of the Moon Goddess and the Night God. She was the one and only vampire who possessed the six sacred treasures forged for the gods.

One legend stated that the Moon Goddess loved vampires so much that any exposure to the sun would cause incurable burns on their bloodless white skin. After that, they would slowly turn into ash.

As for Dramina, she was able to exist under the sun without being burned or even feeling any pain. This was because sunlight was constantly being refracted away from her. Even so, her vampiric biorhythm would still be disrupted by the sun’s rays. Being out in the day meant that she could not tap on her full powers.

Despite this situation, there was not the slightest trace of frustration on Dramina’s unbelievably beautiful face.

Right now, she turned her gaze to the young men standing in front of her, without sparing a glance at the machine men who had cut her off.

「Argh, my goodness. My head is spinning. Thank goodness I’m used to seeing our mentor’s face, or I would’ve lost my wits. Right, Iiu?」

One of the young men rubbed his eyes with his left hand in wonder at the beast covered with human skin and called out to the young man by his side—Iiu.

Usually, one’s spirit would break at the sight of Dramina’s beauty. However, these men seemed to have a mentor that was as beautiful as Dramina.

「Still, don’t stare for too long. Unlike incubuses, you’ll fall straight into the trap of sheer beauty. Once your heart has been bewitched by such irresistible looks, breaking free will be harder than escaping from the depths of any labyrinth.」

「Are you really going to say that? You’re quite human despite being the revered immortal. Oops, it’s rude of us to be chattering away and ignoring a lady. Your Majesty, our greetings to you on this first meeting. I’m a swordsman of the fourth seat of Overgene, an organization devoted to seeking the truth of magic. As for this guy…」

「Just like him, I’m the third seat of Overgene. Please let us take you into our custody, following the orders of our mentor, the commander‐in‐chief of the organization.」

「There’s no point shielding your vulgar natures with such feigned propriety. I’ve heard about Overgene ever since I was on the throne of Valkyrios. All its main members are superhumans, with a great deal of interest in the heritage of celestials in your search for magic. However, why have I become your target?」

As Dramina spoke firmly without the slightest sign of fear, Cleva approached her with a frivolous smile. The way he strode over, with his swaggering gait, made him look like a drunkard. Yet, this way of walking strategically allowed him to shift his center of gravity in any direction instantly.

The members of Overgene were all high-ranking mages, and Cleva was certainly a formidable mage too. He was a top-tier mage swordsman, just like Christina; it was not hard to imagine him being even more powerful than her. On the other hand, Dramina was one of the strongest mage swordsmen in the world.

「Well, there are several reasons, such as the vengeance of my fellow disciples and the sacred treasures in your possession. Anyway, it’s not good that you’re so attractive.」

The moment Cleva mentioned revenge for a fellow disciple, Dramina instantly thought of the Superior Rich whom she had once fought with. As she recalled her past experiences, she grew certain that the Rich in her memories, one of the top five mages in the world, was from the same organization as these young men before her.

「Well, I already knew that I wouldn’t be able to forge an amicable relationship with you. If that’s the case, I’ll shatter these dull wishes of yours with my prowess.」

「Hey, Iiu, she called us dull.」

「It’s not a surprise coming from a target. But, we still have to accomplish our task. After all, that is what our mentor wants.」

「Yeah. So, Dramina, we have to capture you anyway. We won’t be very polite or chivalrous, got it?」

Dramina remained silent as she contemplated her options. Besides, she was not in the mood to speak any further with these men. They had already attacked her without any warning and ganged up against her. There was certainly nothing more cowardly than such an act.

Most importantly, they were obstructing her path to Dran. Even if she dealt with them immediately, her meeting with Dran would still be delayed. As these men spoke to Dramina by themselves, anger piled up in her heart like layers of dust, slowly forming a massive mound of rage.

「Hey, her mood seems to be turning from bad to worse. Did we happen to mention anything offensive? Well, I guess we didn’t say anything pleasant either.」

「Who knows? Though, she looks like she’s hurrying somewhere. She probably never expected us to be obstructing her way.」

「I see, this guy has done something bad then. I don’t know who you’re trying to meet or where you’re headed, but you won’t be able to go anywhere or meet whoever you want to once you come with us. Got it, Your Majesty?」

Cleva’s chuckling form suddenly blurred. He charged forward out of the blue. There had been no preparatory movements in this mysterious dash as he crossed the distance between him and Dramina faster than the blink of an eye.

In Cleva’s well-trained right hand was a large sword. He swung it down from the top right toward the left of Dramina’s neck.

Despite Cleva’s astounding series of moves, they seemed exceedingly slow to Dramina, as if time had stopped. After all, she possessed the ability to move at ten times the speed of light. She had even slayed the machine men easily.

In fact, there was not even a flicker in Dramina’s expression as she stared keenly at Cleva’s swinging blade with an icy gaze.

The dull silver edge of Valkyrios was supposed to slice through this superhuman swordsman’s head and pierce his heart much faster than Cleva’s sword could strike. After that, Dramina would be able to end Cleva’s life. However, Valkyrios’s blade reached Cleva’s neck only to be met with an invisible wall of resistance. The sword’s lightning speed was diminished in an instant.

Dramina swiftly judged that the large sword would strike her before she could even decapacitate Cleva. Hence, she retracted Valkyrios and leaped back so that she would be out of the large sword’s attacking range.

Just like petals that scattered weightlessly in the wind and smoke that wisped formlessly through the air, Dramina jumped back gracefully. She landed silently on the ground as she reaffirmed her grip on Valkyrios; she could wield it normally for now.

However, the sword had grown heavier in Dramina’s grip moments earlier, but there had been no change in her physical body. Hence, it was hard to determine whether she or Valkyrios had been harmed in any way.

Several possibilities and speculations sparked in Dramina’s mind rapidly, and she finally came to a conclusion with one guess.

「Did you manipulate time?」

Upon hearing Dramina’s words, Cleva grinned delightfully. That smile was enough to confirm Dramina’s speculation, though she was certain that he was amused by her statement too.

Cleva rested his large sword on his shoulder and started explaining his methods. After all, it hardly mattered if his opponent knew what he was doing. If they were unable to deflect his blows, offering such knowledge posed no threat to him anyway.

「Well, you’re right. The way I look and my weapon tend to confuse people, but I’m still a mage. Manipulation of time is my forte. Earlier, I slowed down the flow of time around me. Even if your attack was at the speed of light, it’ll become as slow as a tortoise. I can do tons of other things similar to this.」

With a light swing, Cleva stuck his large sword into the ground and dragged it in a horizontal line. In the gust of wind brought by the sword’s movement, the lush green grass withered and turned yellow.

Time, which was supposed to pass gradually, suddenly assaulted the vegetation like a torrent crashing into a dyke. Within seconds, death had descended on this patch of grass.

「Got it now? The wind from the swing of my sword has the ability to accelerate time. Only these weeds experienced such an effect. For most living creatures, such a move brings an easy victory. Too bad it doesn’t really mean much to you, vampire queen.」

Certainly, Dramina, who was the pinnacle of the vampire race, was unlikely to decay due to the passage of time. After all, vampires were best known for their immortality and eternal youth.

Besides, time manipulation was known as one of the most difficult magic skills to execute. No matter how powerful the mages of Overgene were, there was a low chance that one with such a skill could go on a rampage. Hence, it was unlikely that Cleva would try to accelerate the flow of time of Dramina’s body in this fight.

As Dramina kept an eye on the silent Iiu, she replayed the vivid memory of slashing at Cleva and put herself through repeated mental simulations. She focused on the distance at which time began to slow down for Valkyrios, the duration of the time delay, and the possible effective attacks against an opponent who manipulated time.

Dramina even wondered if Iiu was in fact a more powerful mage than Cleva. After all, Iiu was of a higher seat ranking than Cleva. Iiu, too, had a formidable magical whip sword with him. The sight of it left Dramina with even more speculations. Perhaps she should consider Iiu as a different type of mage swordsman from Cleva.
