Chapter 469: Meyrfolks are Weak against Aridity

The interior of the building was covered in geometric patterns etched into sun-dried brick. The patterns are larger and more intricate than anything I’d seen around the town. Some walls weren’t made out of bricks, but by some sort of translucent material with flower-like patterns, casting their shadows on the floor.

Is this an arid region that rarely gets rainfall? There’s plenty of water, though. They don’t have any glass or shutters like those in Kanum, but the breeze flowing through the designs feels refreshing.

As we go further inside, I notice colored bricks mixed in— there’s green, blue, and white, and they seem to be glazed on the surface? There’s mostly geometric designs, but I’m starting to see some other patterns too.

There’s a lot of lion motifs among the creature patterns. Yup, they actually look like proper lions too, which is impressive. Each brick is colored specifically for the part of the lion it represents, creating a detailed image; it must have been hard work. Some of them were even embossed.

I stroll down the hallway, admiring a massive lion mural on the wall.

『Are there any of these creatures nearby? 』
『Yeah. But they don’t come close ー we just safely interact from afar. We’re both dangerous to each other, after all. 』
Interact from afar, huh…

They both pose danger to each other, which means the Meyrfolks must have some attack moves up their sleeves too. Monsters exist in this world, and who knows how strong these lions are, but considering how the Meyrfolks manage to keep their farmland safe without being invaded by humans, that would make sense.

I figure Meyr folk must be strong fighters, but I don’t have any reason to fight them, so I’ll just leisurely look around.

Ah, but I’m still gonna fight against monsters and black spirits, though. I can gather materials too, and if I don’t sharpen my combat skills, I’d be in trouble in case of emergency. I still don’t know if I’ll eventually have to face my doppelganger『Doll』-kun in a fight or not, but it’s better to be prepared.

The high ceiling is dotted with flowers that were planted in pots carved from stone instead of ceramic. It was quite dim inside the building, but it’s cool.

I can hear the sound of flowing water from below the floor. Oh, perhaps it’s similar to my island, where the water flows outward from in here.

『You can’t go past this point. Sorry about that. 』
『No worries. It’s my first time here, after all . 』
I’ve been thinking whether it’s really okay to enter this building, too.

For them to stop me, there must be something important here ーbut guys, are you sure it’s a good idea to pinpoint a place important to you? Oh well, maybe it’s just fake news, a red herring and the actual item is stored somewhere else.

『Can I also look around the fields outside town? 』
『Sure. You can walk through the wheat, but avoid stepping on the flowers, okay? 』

And so, I went outside the town. I found an impressive irrigation system, and just as I thought, the water flows from the town. There’s more water than I imagined, and the stream split in two directions, each branch surprisingly wide and reaching far.

I can’t see the distant canals, but it’s obvious because of the strips of green foliage swaying in the breeze.

『Is this water magic? 』
『No, but it’s easier for the folks who come by ship to understand if we call it magic. 』

Although there were canals for irrigation, there was almost no shade. The Meyr people working in the fields were all enveloped in water spheres, with a thin water film in front that parts when they reach forward.

It was kinda similar to how I used air and wind spirits to form a pocket of air back when I dived into the lake where Dogu was. It’s debatable whether mine counts as “magic” either, so maybe it’s like that.

With the canals here, there are plenty of water spirits around, but none seem to be actively assisting the Meyrfolks. Still, I notice some 『Particles』 from the spirits trickling toward the Meyr people, gathering around them.

Fields of wheat, rows of trees, and colorful flowers fill the landscape. Spirits flit among the leaves and linger by the waterways, spending their time leisurely.

『Are the people of this land creatures that are more similar to spirits rather than the humans who are aboard the ship? 』
Or maybe you guys are some sort of water spirit? I feel like they’re more likely to be spirits rather than humans or earthkins.

『Yup. But it’s not as much as you. We can’t make sense of what you are. 』
『Honestly, I’m not sure myself. I’m just me, but my body was crafted by spirits. 』
『Are you a hero? Your aura is strange if you’re one, though. There’s a lot of things mixed up in you. 』

Oh, so they can sense spirit attributes, huh. Heroes tend to take on the attributes of the deity who summoned them, and I’ve been capturing black spirits to boot, so that must’ve given me a strange aura.

『I got here the same way heroes do, but I’m a free guy. I go around sightseeing, name all sorts of spirits, including black ones, everywhere I go while at it, so that is probably why I’m quite the oddball. 』
『Even the black ones? 』
『Yep, since I’m resistant ーAhh, by the way, those green stones I gave you are manastones, so be careful not to be influenced when you use them. 』
I heard that the larger ones can carry the influence of black spirits, and since Meyrfolks are creatures closer to spirits than humans, they may be more sensitive.

『It’s alright, we can purify the scary things. You won’t name the spirits here? 』
『I already named a few before I reached town, but since you all seem to live alongside them, I figure you wouldn’t want me naming them. 』
Meyr people obviously can see spirits. For them, the latter’s existence is similar to butterflies flitting around.

They probably would dislike having those visible, close-by spirits fall under an outsider’s influence.

『Yup, you’re really strange. 』
Ack, the Meyrfolks called me strange…!!!
