So anyway, we decided to grow two types of watermelon: a sweet one and a bland one. For the bland variety, maybe we could make it into oval-shaped or pale ones so it’s easy to tell them apart.

Also, it sounded like they already started planting date palms. Those trees may be a source of food, but they also work as some sort of windbreaks to keep the sand from burying the water supply. I mean, we’ve got Bayliss, so sand shouldn’t be a concern, but it’s probably not good to just rely on that and skip doing any other preparation.
