Immoral Sisters Chapter 5 Part 1
CHAPTER 5
At night, clouds appeared as compared to the daytime, making the sky unsuitable for any sort of stargazing. Beyond the veil of dark clouds, the moon shone dimly and unreliably.
Gazing out the window at the moon dressed up in a thin robe of dark clouds, Tomoko took a deep breath and turned back to look at her mother and sister. Her mother, Yukie, was cradling her head in her hands while sitting behind a carefully arranged dining table, with various papers spread out on top of it.
Right next to her was Rumi, looking all worriedly at Yukie’s hands. The tea in her cup had already managed to cool down and gone completely cold.
Tomoko left the window’s side and sat at the table as well, right next to Yukie and on the opposite side from Rumi.
The thing that Yukie was looking through was the family’s loan book. Actually, it’s been bothering her ever since the day of that accident. Just looking at this huge amount of money that was drawn in there made Yukie’s head hurt.
Today, Taketo did not show up in their household at all. Yukie heard from Yumi, his secretary, that it was because it was the day when Taketo’s father was actually returning from his long business trip.
What was going to happen to them from now on? Was it really true that Taketo would reduce the amount of Yukie’s debt? But on the other hand, it was something that was relying purely on Taketo’s words, and nothing more. There was no guarantee it would actually happen.
And based solely on his word alone, the future of their entire family could change drastically from day to day.
[Mother…… Onee-chan……]
Unable to bear the heavy burden of this silence in the room, Tomoko spoke up, trying to voice her uneasy and anxious thoughts.
Hearing her daughter speak up like that, Yukie finally turned her face towards her, a faint smile visible on her lips.
Without saying a single word, Yukie only gently stroked Tomoko’s hair, as if trying to cheer her up. Her fingers were feeling awfully cold to the touch.
[Tomoko……]
When Tomoko placed her hand on top of the table, Rumi’s hand, though hesitantly and unsurely, overlapped with it after a long moment.
However, even though for the current moment the three of them were back to being a normal family, none of the three women could help it but to feel that the sense of dependability and the sense of fulfillment that they had been feeling before was lacking in some way right now.
It was not like anything was going to happen to them right now or tomorrow or anywhere near in the future, but there was certainly a feeling of dread of what the future might bring them in the hearts of all three of them. Their usual appearance of them three happily sitting behind the dining table, when they would happily report on the events of the day that happened to all of them, was no longer here.
It was then when Yukie put her head down again and cradled it in her hands, staring blankly at her own knees in the shadow she was casting. Suddenly, the phone on the nearby table started ringing, breaking the dreamy and daze-like state of all three inhabitants of the house.
[Ah……]
It was Rumi who let out a worried voice like that. Was it perhaps Taketo who was calling right now? While the three of them were wondering if it was going to be someone about their debt who was calling, Tomoko stood up from the table and picked up the phone.
[Hello? Taketo-san?]
However, the voice that Tomoko happened to hear coming from the other side of the telephone line was something entirely different from what she was expecting to hear.
[…… Hello? Is that you, Tomoko-chan?]
It was Yumi’s voice. However, the bewitching sound of it that Tomoko still remembers reverberating in her ears yesterday was really faint, and instead of that tone, there was a worryingly urgent tone that could be heard on the other side of the telephone’s receiver.
[Hm? Yumi-san? What’s wrong?]
Upon hearing Yumi’s name, both Yukie and Rumi turned their heads towards Tomoko and the telephone.
They both remembered her as a charming and gentle young woman who Rumi happened to meet just yesterday. As for Yukie, she happened to meet Yumi on at least a couple of occasions in the past. For the time being, both Yukie and Rumi are waiting for Yumi’s voice to continue speaking, while Tomoko is still hanging onto the receiver.
[Today, you see……]
Tomoko had no idea what this call be all about, but judging from Yumi-san’s voice, it must have been something really big and serious. That fact alone was enough to scare her a little bit, and Tomoko swallowed with a trembling breath while still holding onto the telephone’s handset.
Yukie and Rumi listen to the sound coming from the receiver that Tomoko was holding in her hand, their breaths held in anticipation. However, the words that could be heard being spoken by Yumi were so surreal that they almost seemed out of place and unreal.
[Just today, President Nogawa was arrested by the police.]
[A-Arrested by the police……]
Tomoko involuntarily parroted those words in shock. On the other end of the receiver, Tomoko could hear Yumi groaning in response, most probably nodding her head as well.
[As it turns out, President Nogawa has been involved in all matters of crimes, both big and small, for quite a while now. So…… This morning I handed over the evidence I gathered over the years to the police.]
Apparently, Yumi wanted to talk about that exact subject in greater detail, so she was wondering if it would be possible for her to visit the Kitazawa household tomorrow. And that is why she wanted to call and ask them what their schedule for tomorrow would be, so that she would know that they would be available.
Being arrested by the Police. That unfamiliar phrase didn’t make any sense to Tomoko. After Tomoko had finished speaking with Yumi-san, she hung up the phone just like that, as if it was the most natural thing in the world to do.
Judging from the expressions written on both Rumi and Yukie’s faces right next to Tomoko, they must have clearly heard what Yumi-san was talking about over the phone.
[President Nogawa…… has been arrested by the Police.]
[H-Huh……?]
Once again Tomoko took her place behind the table, sitting with her mother and older sister. The cold leftovers of her tea were swaying delicately inside of her cup.
President Nogawa has been arrested by the Police. But if that happened, then what would happen to Yukie’s debt? That was the logical question here.
Or more importantly, what would happen to Yakie’s blackmail photos, who were still supposed to be locked away somewhere in his office?
And there was one more matter as well……
[Taketo-san…… I wonder what is going to happen to him……?]
It was none other than Tomoko who muttered those words. At that time, Rumi raised her head and Yukie nodded her head once.
They were all wondering what would happen to Taketo, the President’s son, now that his father has been arrested. Especially since Taketo’s mother seemed to no longer be around as well.
Thinking like that made the two sisters feel really uneasy for some reason. They both even started to wonder what was Taketo doing at this very moment right now?
At the very least, Taketo would end up being all alone at home. If his father was gone, Taketo would naturally end up being all alone with no one to talk to in that specious house of theirs.
Tomoko wanted to get in touch with Taketo, get to know how he was doing at the current moment. She should have just asked Yumi-san how he was doing on the phone earlier, or something like that.
(Taketo-san…… I want to do something for him, anything at all. He is an important person to me. Someone who taught me a lot of new things……)
That night, Tomoko just returned to her room without making much conversation with her mother or sister. The only thing that would come to her mind was Taketo and how he was doing right now. When she thought about what kind of night Taketo must have been going through right now, she felt uneasy and worried for some reason, and even felt guilty about being able to sleep in her bed all carefree and relaxed like that.
But after worrying about all sorts of things for a long while, Tomoko was finally able to fall to sleep.
Yumi-san, who came to the Kitazawa household the very next day just as she announced she would, started by telling the three Kitazawa women the outline of the entire situation. She was talking for quite a while, but then she finally decided to take a break after having a sip of the tea that was served to her.
