CHAPTER 5

Star Particle Bodies Research Institute 「Ymir」.

At the same time, on the other side of the planet, in Germany.

After successfully surviving the first round of the 2nd War for the Sun’s Authority, Saigo Homura went to 「Ymir」, the forefront of Star Particle Bodies research. The main purpose of his visit there was to examine Saigo Nanami and Parashurama, who are both Star Particle Bodies test subjects stricken with albinism, but there were many other things that had to be confirmed at this laboratory aside from their condition.

Requests for recent aggregated data from the Italian seismic observatory, the comparison of the residual particles of 『The Bull of Heaven』, samples of the Star Particle Bodies in Saigo Nanami’s blood, and the same samples from Parasurama’s blood… he had to go to 「Ymir」in order to go through each and every one of those things, because there was still a mountain of data that cannot be obtained anywhere else in the world.

In order to know whether or not all the information that Homura managed to obtain during the first round of the 2nd War for the Sun’s Authority at the Lost Continent of Atlantis could be turned into something that they could use to further their research, it was necessary to conduct that much research, experiments and examinations before the second round of the War would officially start.

It is only when all of the materials that he requested arrive at the seismic observatory in Italy that he will be able to start working immediately.

(Italy, the place where the Eurasian and African tectonic plates converge, is also known as an earthquake-prone country similar to Japan. It’s a perfect place where I could compare the data of their earthquakes with the earthquake data requested from Japan… and above all, it would give me the perfect opportunity to test out my hypothesis there…)

When he arrived at the break room, Homura quietly looked at the ornament of the cross embedded into the candlestick.

Rome is located in the capital of Italy, a country prone to earthquakes. If the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church is going to treat the current situation seriously, then there is a possibility that he might be willing to take some action and possibly lend them their aid when they send a document with the request for assistance to him. Also, if the Pope is going to be informed about everything that is currently taking place in the Outer World and Little Garden, that might give Homura and the others an opportunity to meet the Pope himself.

(Arranging a meeting with him by using 「Ymir’s」fame and reputation would probably not be out of the question either, but before we resort to that, I would first like to see exactly what actions he is going to be taking given the current situation. But if it turns out that the Roman Catholic Church won’t be open to cooperate with us, then maybe it would be more beneficial to us to turn our attention to the Medici family instead through that girl who wore the 「Triple Crown」 t-shirt whom we met back at the Lost Continent of Atlantis?)

However, the problem here is that this girl disappeared she disappeared at the same time as she escaped from the sinking continent, so with the opportunity to talk to her lost for now, it would seem that meeting and talking with the Medici family won’t be an easy task as well.

(And if that is how things are going to be… then the only other option left for us is to go and ask another important witness…)

… But since Homura was reluctant to go with that option, he dropped his shoulders in resignation.

There was no doubt in his mind that that person is related to Little Garden as well, but for the time being he lacked any sort of concrete evidence needed to prove it, and the little evidence he managed to get was indirect at best, and he was convinced that it won’t be easy to get that person to talk about it in the first place.

And of course, if that person decided to keep their mouth shut and not talk about it at all, then they are going to be in serious trouble, because with only roughly 15 years left until the time when the catastrophic eruption occurs and destroys all of mankind, they simply cannot allow themselves to take any unnecessary detours if they want to save the world on time.

「I don’t feel enthusiastic about, but at this point it looks like I cannot allow myself to not talk to him at all… I thought I was going to run into him here, since he usually was in the break room around this time… but I guess this just proves how much of a free spirit he is. Now, where did he go? Is he in the toilet, perhaps?」

「No, I am right here.」

Homura jumped up in surprise when someone suddenly spoke to him from behind his back, surprising even the caller himself. I guess he just didn’t think that Homura would overreact so much to the little prank that he pulled on him.

Edward Grimnir, the head of Everything Company’s Development Department extinguished the cigar that he was holding and laughed, sitting on a chair and reveling in the fact that his prank worked better than he anticipated.

「I’m sorry about that, but you seemed to be so lost in your own thoughts that I hesitated if I should even call out to you at all.」

「N-No, the fault was mine for agonizing over my thoughts in a public place to begin with.」

「It was indeed…. so, what do you want from me? Have you got the test results for those girls already?」

「Including that, there are two things that I would like to talk with you about. Should we go somewhere else to discuss them?」

「No, it should be fine to talk here. After all, most of the other staff members have already left anyway. The only five people left in this facility are me, you, Nanami-kun, Carla and Chief Weser.」

The eyes of Developent Department’s Chief Edward distorted in disgust when he finished speaking. What he probably meant by that was something along the lines of 「You’re my only pawn left in the entire facility」.

Homura felt a chill run down his spine, but if something like that was enough to scare him into backing down at this point, then he wouldn’t have come to talk to him in the first place.

Now that he made up his mind, Homura leaned forward and showed Saigo Nanami’s test results to Chief Edward first.

「We have discovered a new Star Particle Bodies test subject, named Saigo Nanami, and by the time we finished examining the samples of her blood, we managed to discover a new kind of property in the Star Particle Bodies present in her bloodstream.」

「Hmm. Give me the abridged version, please.」

「What I am trying to say here is that we discovered that the Star Particle Bodies that we have thought capable of changing according to the constitution of the human test subject that has been injected with them can also change greatly in accordance with the test subject’s individual nature. I think it is going to be easier to understand if you think about it as something similar to your blood type.」

Homura then proceeded to take out three sheets of paper from the documents he had prepared and placed them on the desk in front of Development Department Chief Edward, who looked at them with great interest.

「Please look at this. The first sheet is for the 『Origin』Star Particle Bodies, the second one is for Saigo Nanami’s Star Particle Bodies, and the third is for Parashurama’s Star Particle Bodies. We shall call them Particle Bodies I, II and III respectively from now on.」

「Hmm. Do continue.」

「While the original Particle Bodies I can be said to fit into the blood of just about any human, Particle Bodies II and III can only work properly inside of the body of the person whose traits match those of Particle Bodies II and III. When placed anywhere else, they will actually hinder the acceleration of the Star Particle Bodies, because they will be treated as a foreign object.」

When Homura made a brief pause, Chief Edward fell silent in order to digest his words properly. After staring at the report and the sheets for about five minutes or so, he slapped the original Particle Bodies I report and made a grim face.

「It doesn’t look like a good report… I’ll have to check a few things about it.」
