Section 1
It had been three weeks since I moved to Nanae Island.
At this point, I should be used to my new life.
I wake up in the morning at 7 AM upon hearing my phone’s alarm. I get out of the bed and opened the curtain and window. Next, I take a deep breath of the morning air. It smelled slightly of the sea.
「Good morning, Nanana」
I greet the earthbound ghost who has been enjoying her online game the whole night.
「Mm. Good morning, Jūgo」
Nanana replied with a smile.
Nanana’s decision when the famous detective had come to not talk to me for a while had been finally lifted. I was relieved that she would reply to my greeting now.
While talking to Nanana and watching the TV, I finish eating breakfast. Then I finish my preparation, and go out of the house saying, 「I’ll be going」.
At this point, the time is just past 8 am. Every morning, I take 20 minutes to walk to school. Since it was a distance that is slightly inconvenient to walk, I was considering buying a bicycle. However, I did not dislike taking my time to walk to school. Because of this, the chances of me actually buying a bicycle would be slim.
I heard somebody running from behind. Then, while passing by, the person tapped my shoulder.
「Good morning, Jūgo. It’s a refreshing morning」
I wished she would just go after greeting me. Tensai Ikkyū, the stupidly named self-proclaimed detective would go out of her way to slow down and walk beside me.
「Good morning Tensai. The morning had just stopped being refreshing though」
I greeted her in a slightly exasperated manner.
「Now then, let us learn at school again today」
Somehow, this famous detective woman that I had met a few days ago had taken a liking to me.
It was a weird situation, before I knew it, I was talking to Tensai normally without any honorifics.
The reason why it is weird is that since I had approached the second phase of growth, when I had started to strongly react to the difference in sex, I had not talked to the other gender normally without honorifics. That is, except for my relatives. Why was that? It was because it was embarrassing, of course. Besides, naturally, I chose to speak in honorifics or some makeshift polite manner. Well, probably I had started doing so because I wanted to honor the other person. I tried to make such an abashed excuse. I had considered this throughout my puberty, but it seems that this did not apply to the famous detective at all. I shall state it clearly, but Tensai Ikkyū was definitely a cute girl. If one considers just her looks, a pure boy would redden his face completely. Now then, why could I interact with this pretty girl as if I was talking to a guy?
「What happened? Even though you get to walk with a cute girl side by side this morning, you are making such a depressed face? 」
「I decided not to trust girls who call themselves cute」
「Ah, that is a good decision. Those kinds of women do not have good personalities」
I was slightly irritated with her.
I see, it must be because of her personality. It seems that the first time I had met her was so crazy, that such politeness or reverence towards others does not apply to her.
By the way, seemingly, Tensai did not intend to offend me at all in our conversation. Tensai does not at all remember what she had said just a few seconds ago in normal daily conversation. According to Tensai’s whiny assistant, Tensai forgets all unimportant information and that’s what causes this phenomenon. I guessed that this assistant would come chasing after us any moment since he had been abandoned by Tensai. According to the assistant, 「When she forgets things it’s unintentional」. Then why would she say such things? I don’t get it.
「Hey, Tensai. Weren’t you from the First High School? Why did you go out of your way to come to our school? 」
Tensai and her assistant who had come to our school a few days ago were originally students of the First High School, which is in the central part of Nanae Island. They had transferred to our Third High School a few days after she had come to my house to take the blue gemstone. Even though it was within the same island. I did not understand.
「I would be useful later on」
This would be Tensai’s only response. It seems that she was convinced that I could understand everything just by this line. Tensai was not good at expressing her own thoughts and intentions to others. It is not that she is clumsy at speaking. Rather, she would talk in concordance to her own knowledge. Thus, she tended to assume that others would have the same general knowledge or way of thinking as herself. She would think they already understand. This is why her explanations were never enough, and the one listening to her would not understand at all.
That is why I could not understand her view of the world.
In this way, we arrived at school and went into the classroom. While greeting my classmates, I sat in my seat.
By the way, Tensai did not greet anyone. Since transferring to this school, because of her 「I am a famous detective」line, the classmates avoided her. On top of that, Tensai did not seem to care about this at all.
Additionally, our seats were somehow beside each other. I still could not understand this.
「G… good morning」
Upon hearing this soft weak voice, I looked at the classroom’s entrance. I saw a foreigner who was wearing the girl’s uniform while heaving his shoulders up and down.
His name is D’arc Hoshino. He is the foreigner that is the assistant of Tensai. He is also a newcomer to this school. I shall reiterate this, but he is not a “she”. It is a “he”. He looked like a girl that was very innocent as if he was an endangered animal that is officially stated as the most important to protect. However, on the inside, he was a guy that had the same middle stump as me.
「Good morning, Hoshino」「Good morning Ms. Hoshino」
In contrast to Tensai, D’arc was popular. Mainly with guys.
D’arc, who is incomprehensibly Tensai’s assistant and always stuck with Tensai, somehow pulled the strings of the male heart.
D’arc is the girl who is always beside the self-proclaimed famous detective, who is way beyond just hyper, but is plain weird. It seemed this is how D’arc was viewed in the eyes of guys who did not know that he was a guy. Well, I would have mistakenly thought so too if I did not know D’arc’s true identity. This is why I did not laugh at them.
「Sigh, Ms. Hoshino is so cute」
This was the guy classmate who had suddenly become close to me ever since he found out that I knew the two newcomers. I nodded, and made a reply that would make him imagine things. Surely the image of Hoshino D’arc must be quite crazy amongst the minds of this classmate. By the way, my reply has no relation to how he had been laughing the most when Tensai had called herself a famous detective.
「But, you seem to always be with Tensai」
Yurika Yumeji, who is the class representative, said so.
「That’s not true. I don’t know her at alllllll. I am a complete stranger to her」
I politely tried to deny it all I could. This was in the central garden during the lunch break. The class representative who wore glasses sat beside me said, 「hmm」, in a meaningful way.
This is how I ended up eating lunch with Ms. Yumeji quite often. Sadly, we are not a couple. We would coincidentally meet around here every time. I would look for a place where Tensai couldn’t find me and come to this place. It seemed that Ms. Yumeji had been coming here to eat alone since the start. This was really a coincidence, and I really was not stalking this young girl who has glasses. I really mean it.
Currently, my only joy was to make small talk with her like this. It wouldn’t be a lie to say that I came to school for this.
That is why when the afternoon’s class begins and when the school ends, I would immediately escape from the classroom and go home. It was because I did not want to suffer the famous detective after school too.
Today was an off day from my part-time job, so I aimlessly walked around the town. Then I came back to the Happiness Dorm.
