「After striking the deal with Rou, Sansa went back to Nanana and told her about what had happened. After hearing details Nanana started dancing about.
「Isn’t it really amazing!? Treasure! It’s a pirate’s treasure! 」
「Nanana-san, it amazing! If we win, more rich we are! 」
Nanana and Hao seemed excited.
Sansa watched both of them and grinned inside. Have fun while you can, you’ll be a middle aged man’s lover soon.
Sansa and the gang entered the casino’s VIP room after being escorted by one of Rou’s underlings. People who have power and money gather in this casino and the people who have the most power among them are escorted to this room. This room lived up to its name since it was filled with wealthy looking people who looked wealthier than the people they saw before and their gaze was fixed on Nanana’s group.
When Sansa came to the gambling table Rou was already sitting on the other side and a thin man in a suit was standing next to him.
The interpreter standing next to Rou translated Rou’s words as he spoke to Nanana.
「Let us go over the deal first. First, you’ll have to bet all those chips and I will put this Hakuko in place of chips. 」
Unlike Hao, the interpreter spoke fluent Japanese. Rou’s underling brought in a rolling cage while he was speaking, it had a cage with iron bars on it.
A white fox was lying inside the cage all exhausted, when the people surrounding them saw what was inside the cage, they exclaimed surprise and gave it a curious gaze. It seems like white fox held a special meaning in this country, which was more than what Sansa had speculated.
Rou looked somewhat satisfied at their reaction.
I see, the reason he picked this room is because he wanted to show his authority by displaying the white fox to the wealthy people in this room. It’s definitely a good demonstration of power.
「Woah, it’s amazing! That fox is really white! 」
Nanana was curious about it too like the rest of the people. Sansa looked at Nanana out of the corner of her eye and predicted Rou’s next move. First they will gamble with Nanana’s chips and Rou’s white fox at stake. Rou would win of course. And through this, Rou’s authority would further strengthen. But that wouldn’t be the end of it. Rou, who’ll snatch the victory, will make an offer to Nanana who’ll be there all overwhelmed.
「How about you bet yourself to take back the chips you’ve lost? 」
Obviously there isn’t a person who wouldn’t accept that challenge in the situation. Nanana is no exception. People like Nanana who are enthusiastic about everything are more prone to such traps.
Currently Nanana has earned enough money to form the base of her dream. This is without a doubt a ray of hope that could make Nanana and the rest of the gang’s plans come true. But that would disappear without a trace in the battle with Rou after this. I can’t imagine how much despair Nanana will experience if that happens. The chance that she had in her hand was going to turn into dust. There couldn’t be anything more that could make people fall into despair.
And then someone is going to whisper to her without giving her any time to process.
「Let’s gamble again to regain everything. 」
For Nanana it would feel like the dream which had disappeared reappearing in front of her. There is no way she would turn down that offer. And then, she’ll lose once again. She wouldn’t even realize that she had lost a bet that she could have never won.
Dragging her into hell after hampering her ability to think properly, it’s a perfect scenario.
「So, what should we play? 」
Nanana who was unaware of what game they would play asked the interpreter merrily.
「You will be playing blackjack. Both of you will get ten chips and bet using those and the one who has taken all of the chips from their opponent wins. 」
「I have played blackjack but I don’t know the proper rules. 」
The interpreter smiled gently after hearing Nanana’s honest words, who was a beginner in the casino.
「I thought you would say that, so we have a special rule this time. 」
「A special rule? 」
「Yes, we’ll be omitting fine rules such as scoring combinations. It’ll be a simple competition of the total number of cards being closest to twenty one. 」
「Ah, alright. If that’s the case then it seems fine. 」
「Now, let me go to the rules in detail. You’ll get the roles of house and player alternately. After that you’ll be handed two cards by the dealer. The house needs to place their first card they were given by the dealer in the open. Players aren’t allowed to look at their opponent’s cards yet. Player then decides the rate of chips that is going to be placed for the bet. Rate can be from one to three chips, remember that you can’t bet more than the number of chips you have. 」
「I see, I see. 」
「After all the preparations are over the game will commence. First the player will display their cards and take their hand’s total to twentyone. The numbers higher than Ten such as J, Q and K will be counted as Ten. In case of A you will be able to choose between One and Eleven. Coming back to the point, after the player displays their card, if they want a new card then they can say Hit to the dealer and the dealer will provide them a new card. If they feel like they don’t want anymore cards then they can say Stand. That is when the player’s hand’s total number will be decided. 」
「So, what if the total sum of cards exceed twenty one at that point……? 」
「It will be a Bust, which means that you have lost the game. The game will be over before the house turns the cards. 」
「Oh, got it. 」
Nanana nodded.
「I get it, so the house has an upper hand if we go by this rule. Since the player’s number gets decided first, the house gets to decide things after looking at the player’s number. If the player gets a Burst then it’ll be a lucky thing for the house and the house can decide whether to draw a card or not after looking at the player’s number. There’s also a possibility to win with the first two cards without saying Hit. 」
「You are right about it. 」
「So, that’s why the player gets to decide the rate. I get it. 」
「I am glad that you are a fast learner. So, are you fine with this rule? 」
「Yes, I think it’s a really fair rule. 」
Nanana smiled brightly and Sansa smiled bitterly inside after looking at Nanana.
She definitely is a fast learner but she has misunderstood something basic. This gamble isn’t something that has fairness in its criteria. The point that needs to be noted here is that you can bet a maximum of three chips and you can’t look at your cards before you bet. Which means that it is hard to go on offense and is easy to defend if you go by this rule. It is obvious that this match will consume a lot of time. So, what does it mean? It means that it will be played a couple of times. The probability of luck affecting the match would be lower if the game is played multiple times. Which means that this rule is perfect for hunting Nanana who is blessed with a massive amount of beginner’s luck.
The game began.
First one to be the house was Rou. The dealer handed the cards to them. The dealer uses a case called a shoe to hand out the cards. The shoe has a couple of decks (fiftytwo playing cards) in it beforehand. The shoe is rectangular if you look from above and it has hundreds of cards inside which are placed horizontally. The dealer smoothly slid out the cards one by one from an opening in the shoe. He placed a card facing up and a card facing down in front of Rou who was the house and he placed two cards, both faced down in front of Nanana who was the player.
The card facing up placed in front of Rou was a King.
Now that all this had been done it was time for the player to decide the rate.
「Ummm, I’ll go with one. 」
Nanana took out a chip from ten chips she had and placed it in the front. Rou took out a chip from his chips and placed it in the front too.
Sansa thought it was surprising. She was sure Nanana would go for three chips.
