When Ainz received a letter from Almus asking for his help to borrow twenty thousand talents, he realized two things.

First, the kingdom’s finances were in a dire state.

As far as Ainz knew, the Romalia Kingdom was already making every possible effort to manage its finances. And yet, they still needed twenty thousand talents. This could only mean one thing—the royal treasury was completely empty.

And the second realization:

If things continued as they were, they would lose.

There was no way foreign merchants would lend them twenty thousand talents. Even domestic merchants, who went as far as to prioritize the country’s interests over profits, could only manage up to ten thousand talents at most.

Let alone foreign merchants—they wouldn’t lend anywhere near that amount. At best, they might offer three thousand. If negotiations went exceptionally well, five thousand would be the absolute limit.
