Over the Infinite Chapter 16 Part 2

「Ah, that means you had the talent or foundation to learn that skill even without a class. Every skill has individual prerequisites, but taking on a class allows you to bypass these requirements. 」

So, anyone who takes on the (Swordsman) class and reaches Class Level 10 can learn ((Power Slash)). But even if they’re not in that class or in a different class altogether, if they meet the prerequisites, they can still learn ((Power Slash)). The reactions from the cat-eared girl and the Dungeon Master now make sense.

Typically, adventurers in the Labyrinth City rely on their classes to learn skills. In contrast, I had been learning skills in vast amounts without relying on a class.

I can see why they were shocked. I was practically learning skills without any system assistance.

「So, skills like my ((Power Slash)) and Yuki’s ((Rapid Rush)), which should have typically been learned through the benefits of a class, were learned through our own capabilities?」

「Exactly. Action skills like those, which the user actively triggers, are especially challenging to learn without the assistance of a class. Your ability to do so indicates your innate talent. I mean, learning skills like that at this stage is an accomplishment. You should be proud. 」

Is it? I can’t quite grasp how difficult it might be, but if the instructor says so, it’s probably a big deal. As for Yuki, I’m not even sure when he learned his.

「So, if Tsuna, who has already learned ((Power Slash)), becomes a (Swordsman) and reaches Class Level 10, what skill does he learn?」

「Unfortunately, he won’t learn anything new.」

「Oh, really? … So, it doesn’t just move up the skills you would acquire later? 」

That could be tricky.

If I’ve managed to learn ((Power Slash)) on my own, it indicates I have an aptitude for the (Swordsman) class. However, since I’ve already acquired the skill that one would typically gain at (Swordsman) Lv10, it seems a bit wasteful.

So, should I perhaps consider another class that’s closely aligned with my abilities? It’s a tough decision to make.

「Let’s continue then. Next, we’ll talk about how to level up the class Lv and its limitations.

You can increase your base Lv by defeating monsters in dungeons. I believe you gained levels as a bonus from the boss fight during the trial, but that’s an exception.

By the way, what level are you two currently at? 」

「Uh, we’re at Lv10. … You’re the same, right Tsuna? 」

「Yeah. 」

The memory of leveling up while being swamped by a horde of monsters on the fifth floor is still fresh. After that, we defeated the Minotaur and the cat-eared, but perhaps due to not meeting the required experience points or the bonuses not applying, our levels didn’t rise.

「In this short amount of time, I don’t know how you managed to raise your level to that, but as mentioned earlier, that’s your base Lv (or race Lv). However, the class Lv is a bit different. You can raise it by accumulating experience specific to that class. 」

「So, we don’t necessarily have to defeat monsters? 」

「Correct. Although, if you’re in a combat-oriented class like (Swordsman), you’ll end up needing to fight using a sword, so combat becomes inevitable.

For production-oriented classes like (Blacksmith), it’s straightforward. You gain levels just by blacksmithing.

For a (Swordsman), what’s important to remember is that if you fight using a different weapon like a spear, you won’t earn class experience points. 」

So, class levels are like proficiency levels in a game. You just need to continuously engage in activities specific to that class to improve your proficiency.

If it’s a combat profession, there’s not much to consider. Just join a class aligned with your preferred weapon, and fight using that weapon.

「Also, there’s a restriction with the class Lv – it can’t exceed your base Lv. So, in your case, the maximum class level at this moment would be 10.

So even if you’re in a production class, you’ll eventually need to fight monsters. 」

That’s not too relevant for us, but it might be tough for those in a production class.

「Ah, is that why we don’t join a class during the trial? 」

「Well, that’s not the only reason, but there’s little point in joining a class when your base Lv is only 1. Most classes don’t start acquiring skills until at least Lv5, and you don’t even know your aptitude at the trial stage. 」

So, the trial is meant to help determine our aptitude, and then we choose a class before the real challenge begins. Seems like they’ve put some thought into it.

「So, a class is a system that allows you to further specialize and enhance the abilities associated with broader roles, like warrior or magician. We’ll end the first half here. Any questions? 」

「Ah, sorry, just one. I get the skills provided by classes. But joining a class also boosts our attributes, right? 」

「Yes. The specific attributes that get enhanced vary with each class. 」

「Is it possible that while certain abilities get boosted, others – the ones that the class is weak in – might get a negative adjustment?」

「That’s right. Your (Strength) might decrease when choosing a magic-focused class. This is actually one of the reasons we discourage adventurers from picking a class during the trial phase. While your class level is low, it’s not much of a concern, but there’s still a slight change to your stats. 」

Going by what this vampire says, there probably isn’t much of a difference at low levels. Maybe it’s something like a -1 in (Strength). If you think of it as a stat correction, it’s only like 1% of the original strength you had, essentially a margin of error.

However, if you were to pick a class that’s unrelated to combat during the trial, even by a small amount, you’d get a negative correction. That would definitely affect the dungeon conquest.

「The stat correction due to class is almost negligible at lower levels. So, you don’t need to worry about it for now, but it might be good to keep it in the back of your mind.」

-2-

「Tsuna, did you get it?」

「Mostly. …Well, it’s difficult to understand. Honestly, I didn’t want to hear it during the trial, so the timing now is right. 」

At that point, knowing wouldn’t have mattered. Especially not in our case.

「I think that explanation was probably very simplified to make it easy to understand.」

「Well, yeah. It’s not something you can cram all at once. They’re just teaching us only what’s absolutely necessary and expect us to research the rest ourselves. 」

There are still lectures after the debut, and there are plenty of optional courses available.

In training sessions like this one, they’re probably only conveying the essential information.

「That’s right… I actually looked up a lot on the internet before this lecture. The guild’s page has information, and there are individuals analyzing classes and skills as well. But, for some reason, it’s ‘not sinking in.’」

「…」

That rings a bell somewhat.

「Do you know where the center of the Labyrinth City is?」

「Huh? That’s sudden. …It’s the dungeon teleport facility, isn’t it? We went there during the trial. 」

「No, it’s a point called the central intersection where several large avenues cross.」

Milk Pudding is close there.

「…Was there such a large intersection?」

In other words, that’s the thing.

「It’s not very pleasant. We’re being collectively perception-blocked. 」

「Huh? What do you mean? 」

「As for that, you’ve already been exempted from this, but you should go to the teleportation facility and ask. ‘This is the center of the labyrinth city, right?’」

「Is it different? …It must be different; you did say it was an intersection after all. 」

「The answer that comes back is. ‘Yes, this is the center of the Dungeon District of the Labyrinth City.’」

Yuki showed me a stunned expression when I said this. I was stunned when I was told, too. Especially when I had to go to a specific destination urgently. It was a dire situation.

「…What is this? So, there’s a different center for this city? 」

「The problem isn’t that, though. I think we’re under some kind of influence that prevents us from recognizing unnecessary information. This is just a part of the Labyrinth City called the Dungeon District, and the real city is actually much larger. I didn’t know until I went to Milk Pudding, but that’s the situation.

This seems to be a regulation to prevent information from leaving the city, and it’s highly likely that we’re also receiving similar interference regarding classes and skills. 」

Information about the town that would be problematic if known by outsiders, or information that isn’t really necessary at that point, is likely the target. In the case of adventurers, it might be determined by things like rank.

「Wait, I’m getting confused. So, we can’t understand, or rather, recognize the information that someone has restricted? 」

「I can’t say for sure, but it’s highly probable. I plan to ask the Dungeon Master about it later. The most obvious example is this: Have you ever been told not to speak about the information related to the 5th floor of the trial dungeon? 」

The fact that information about the Trial’s 5th floor is a secret is something that many people, starting with the cat-eared girl, have said.

「Eh, I wasn’t… but it’s weird. It’s information I could hear if I wanted to and is even posted on websites, so why is it being called a secret? 」

「In fact, people are talking about the 5th floor of the Trial even inside the guild hall. There might be people inside the guild hall who haven’t tried it yet. Despite that, it’s considered a secret, and the actual challengers don’t know the details. 」

「Maybe they’re hearing it, but they can’t recognize it? 」

「That’s likely.」

This is a disturbing system. However, it ensures that no information about the city leaks out. There’s also some consideration not to cause confusion by giving unnecessary information, I suppose.

「Hmm, really? Even for magic, isn’t the scale too large? I mean, I do have some idea. 」

「I don’t know whether it’s technology or magic, but it’s probably something like that. The information you’ve researched is likely under the same category. …Let’s do a little test. 」
