Over the Infinite Chapter 16 Part 4
「By the way, how do our suitable classes compare to others? Is everyone like this? 」
「There’s not much variation. If I had to say, the rare ones would be (Grappler) and (Surveyor).
(Surveyor) is a class that appears when you become accustomed to map-making around the intermediate rank. The only truly rare one at this stage is (Grappler). Even those aiming for (Martial Artist) don’t usually choose it first. It’s too niche. It’s commonly chosen by fighters who specialize in arenas, not adventuring. 」
It seems there isn’t a particularly unique class.
(Dual Swordsman) is also a regular class, and there are many among the lower ranks.
The only relatively rare one is (Grappler), but that’s not an option. It’s too limited against monsters.
Even if it’s called a grappler, there’s a champion in an underground fighting arena who doesn’t do much grappling.
「The fourth-floor boss, the Lizardman, despite clearly being a swordsman, used magic. Isn’t this system a bit challenging? 」
「Well, it’s not like you can’t learn magic if you don’t belong to a mage-type class. Some people learn it on their own, and others acquire it through skill orbs. For instance, the skill called ((Item Box)) that the (Cargo) class learns falls under the magic category, but almost anyone can learn it. 」
「Just out of curiosity, is it possible to switch to another class after choosing one? 」
「Yes, it’s possible. And you won’t forget the skills you’ve learned. However, there are some skills that require you to be in a certain class, so you’ll need to be careful about that. 」
I see, if job changes are possible, then there’s no need to worry too much. I can learn skills, and there might be more classes available when it’s time to change jobs.
「As a side note, this place doesn’t display classes that aren’t related to dungeon exploration. Excluding a few like (Blacksmith) and (Miner), general classes like (Cleaner) can be acquired at different guilds. Ordinary people get these classes from guilds other than the Adventurer’s Guild. 」
「I thought ordinary people couldn’t increase their base level? 」
「There’s no law that says ordinary people can’t fight monsters, and they can belong to multiple guilds. 」
Is that so? Are there places outside of dungeons where you can fight monsters? …Like arenas? So, in this town, just because you’re an ordinary person doesn’t mean you’re necessarily weak. Adventurers who get too cocky thinking they’re strong might get beaten up by an ordinary person.
With that, the long training session came to an end. I acquired the (Gladiator) class, and Yuki acquired the (Dual Swordsman) class.
Such an incredibly plain class composition, huh.
-4-
The next day, I made my way to the Guild Hall. Well, I come here every day anyway.
Having acquired my class and having prepared to challenge the 10th floor of the Infinite Corridor, I was at the delicate point of stocking up on cheap armor, potions, curry powder, water, and food, ready to delve into the dungeon tomorrow. But just as I was gearing up for the dive, there was an editorial meeting for the Trial Dungeon.
I wish they wouldn’t schedule it the day before a dungeon dive. Well, it’s not like I absolutely have to challenge the dungeon tomorrow.
By the way, this editorial meeting seems to be special. Typically, even when adventurers are going to release videos, they don’t have such meetings. Usually, the editing work is done by the adventurers themselves.
I’m not sure what they’ll be doing, but it might be related to the free broadcasts mentioned on the bulletin board.
Since the Guild will be broadcasting, maybe they’ll put extra effort into music and production. Perhaps a cool logo or something.
Yuki said he would be a bit late, so I entered the Guild Hall on my own.
I still had a bit of time, so as I was pondering whether to get a drink in the cafeteria or the waiting room, I spotted some familiar cat ears in the cafeteria.
Well, since it’s my video that’s being edited, it’s only natural she’s here.
There’s no point in dwelling on what happened before. Traumatic events, though not mentioning whose, should be addressed sooner rather than later.
Being awkward with someone who is technically my senior isn’t good. I should probably take the initiative and strike up a conversation.
I silently sat down across the table from the cat-eared girl, holding a drink.
「…Meow. Meeeow! Meowmeowmeow… 」
Has she truly turned into a real cat?
In the hidden stage, she wasn’t adding “meow” to her sentences.
「Wha-wha-what meow? Don’t tell me you want to eat me meow! 」
「I’m not going to eat you! 」
What kind of monster is that? The idea of a creature eating people in the cafeteria is terrifying.
「It’s obvious you’d be here since it’s an editorial meeting. You’re here for the same reason, right? 」
「Ah, yes, that’s right meow… Oops, meow. My trauma just… 」
「…Well, we can’t avoid talking to each other forever, can we? Both of us. 」
We’re both adventurers. We’re bound to run into each other at the Guild Hall.
Moreover, I know this cat-eared girl didn’t willingly choose that line of work.
「Well, yes, meow. We’re both in this line of work… I never thought I’d be called in for a video editorial meeting, meow. 」
「Standing out as the Chitta who spectacularly lost to a rookie sure gets you noticed. 」
「…」
…Did I miss the mark?
「Anyway, meow… 」
「Hey, don’t just ignore me! That was a joke I put a lot of effort into! 」
「Your silly puns aren’t working on me right now, meow! That’s not funny, meow! 」
「What? If you want to shoot me down, I’ll just email Terawaros. I’ll spread the word that you actually wet yourself… 」
「Meowww!!! Stop it, meow! Anything but that!! 」
Which one is she reacting to?
「Please stop? 」
「Hey, stop it, meow… If you expose such a thing in the cafeteria, it’ll be a huge blow to my image, meow. My popularity as an idol will plummet, meow. 」
Idol? I doubt she’s that popular to begin with.
If this video gets published, she’ll definitely become popular. Especially on message boards and the like.
「… Anyway, this video is also problematic, meow. If it’s released, our leader will definitely see it, meow. If I get kicked out of the clan, I won’t be able to continue, meow. 」
「Losing to a rookie, is that bad enough to get kicked out of the clan? 」
Well, adventurers’ performance drastically changes before and after their debut. While it’s one thing to lose to a low-rank, losing to a pre-debut rookie is problematic.
Still, I don’t think it’s something that can’t happen. Even after watching the video, I don’t believe they would call her pathetic. She was dominating until that weird skill activated.
Is the clan this cat-eared girl belongs to a strict meritocracy?
「I wasn’t using my tail-end speech in the hidden stage, so I might be disqualified as a beast-ear, meow. 」
「That’s what you’re worried about?! … Wait, does everyone in your clan speak with such tail-endings? 」
「Yes, meow. It’s a rule for the whole clan, meow. Actually, there are quite a few members who’d like to be exempted, but if they say that, they’ll get knocked out by the leader, meow. 」
Sounds like a harsh clan. Definitely don’t want to join.
Considering it’s named “Beast Ear Parade”, you probably have to be a beast person to join.
「So, does your clan leader also have some sort of speech tail? And they hit you while saying that? …That’s a surreal image. 」
「Our clan leader is from the rabbit tribe, so they add ‘~pyon’ meow. 」
Oh, how cute.
Maybe, just like the bunny-eared beast-person I saw on the Milk Pudding site, they are also adorable.
…Eliza-chan was so cute.
「What kind of person is the clan leader? 」
「He’s a bald guy who always wears sunglasses, meow. 」
「What?! Why?! Who would want that?! Makes no sense! 」
「Ah, don’t ask me, meow! I can’t do anything about our leader’s appearance, meow!! 」
Damn, give me back my innocence.
The image of a rabbit-eared person has completely changed in my mind. Someone please erase the image of a bald rabbit-eared man from my brain.
「By the way, where’s Yuki meow? 」
「Hm, ah, he’s just running a bit late. … You should probably apologize to him, don’t you think? 」
From his perspective, he was suddenly betrayed by a senior he relied on.
「Uh… Yes, meow. I’ll do that, meow. Even if it’s my job, I know I did something wrong, meow… 」
I splendidly gave her a taste of her own medicine, but Yuki just got hit one-sidedly.
While we were talking, I saw Yuki entering the hall.
He looked around and when he saw me, headed straight to our table.
「Oh, it’s Chitta-san who got eaten by Tsuna and wet herself. Hey there!! 」
「You guys are really the worst, meow!! 」
…Well, I want to believe that was Yuki’s way of being considerate.
