Return of the Fallen Volume 10 Chapter 108
“You want me to give you a chance, you want my help. There’s no way I can trust you, especially after what you just pulled. I became lost in my own Realm, you manipulated my senses. Keeping you around is dangerous.”
Kazuki’s power swelled but Nevius didn’t back down. Up to this point, he was timid but now he stood straight without so much as a tremble.
“I know you don’t like how I went about things but it was the only way to get your attention. If I just came up to you and asked for a favor, you would have no reason to say yes. At first, I didn’t even want to come to you because of this but then I found out you have your own problems. I can sense your soul. If the fractures are not fixed, you will never become a Demigod let alone a God. With that, you will never achieve your goal of revenge. Now though there is at least a possibility. If I help you, I’m not saying you are guaranteed to become a Demigod later on but at least your soul won’t get in the way. So I implore you, help me and I will solve the problem with your soul.”
Kazuki stood taller than Nevius and with his overwhelming might, he left an intimidating domineering presence. Looking up at Kazuki, Nevius swallowed hard but he held firm and kept his gaze.
Kazuki’s power began to settle.
(This old man isn’t wrong. I don’t know him. Had he come up to me before, I might have just shooed him away. Now though he’s gotten my attention as well as my curiosity. He knew information about me and is connecting pieces most don’t even know about. He also has these mysterious and strange things that even I with all of my knowledge can not grasp fully. Maybe if it’s him, maybe he really can help me.)
Kazuki had to admit the old man was brave. He knew of Kazuki’s strength and yet dared mess with him in his own backyard. At the same time, he couldn’t just trust the guy out of nowhere.
“How am I supposed to trust you when you weren’t upfront in the first place. Had you come to me beforehand and mentioned my soul, I might have discussed helping you then but now, there is already a distance between us, a gap that can’t simply be closed with just words.”
With Kazuki’s power calming, Nevius pulled a chair over and sat down while rubbing his back and shoulders with a pained face.
“Your right, maybe I should have just reached out but as I told you I can read souls. At the time you had just come off of killing your sister and another Titan. I couldn’t quite predict which way the pendulum would swing and so to protect myself I decided to set things this way for later on after you’re rage had cooled. After all, you never ask a man for a favor or a trade when he’s pissed. That’s a sure way to get your head busted in and after seeing you crush Fera’s skull with a single grip of your fist, I wasn’t willing to take that risk.”
Nevius poured another cup of ta for Kazuki before refilling his own cup. He put on a brave front but as he lifted his cup to his mouth, his hand shook terribly, almost causing his tea to spill.
Kazuki sat back down and took a sip of his own tea.
“So how do you propose we go from here old man? As far as I can see you have much ground to cover.”
Nevius nodded before putting his cup back down.
“In order to gain a bit of favor and start the process of building trust, the solution is simple. I said you have three fractures in your soul. If you take a look you will be able to find them with me guiding you. I of course won’t dare approach. From here I can sense the smallest fracture. I’ll personally tell you where it is so you can see it yourself and then I’ll even tell you how to fix it. Once it’s fixed you’ll see that I wasn’t lying and we can discuss things further.”
“Oh, and after you tell me, why would I need your help in finding or fixing the other fractures. after all it is my soul. If given enough time, I would surely find them on my own and then fix them.”
*Pfssshh*
Nevius who was drinking his tea again suddenly spit it all out and hit Kazuki dead in the face before he laughed.
*Bwahaha
His laugh though was cut short as he realized what he had just done.
“Forgive me!”
With a snap of his fingers, one of the flying silks came down in front of Kazuki. It glowed with a faint silverish color before a large gust of wind erupted from it and dried Kazuki’s face in an instant. After that, it returned to the sky by itself.
Kazuki snapped at the old man.
“WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?”
Nevius once more became nervous but was slightly snickering.
“I’m sorry, it’s just what you said. Yes you could eventually find the problem after all it is your soul but you’ve been going along all this time and never even knew about the fractures right. To think you will just find them now that you know of them. Not just that but the first one is the easiest to fix, the other two…Even I would find it difficult to repair them. After all, the first one seems to be from a missing Mage core, the other two though…are odd. With my senses, I can find them in a matter of seconds or minutes while you doing it on your own, could potentially take a thousand years or more. A few hundred if you’re lucky and maybe only a few years if you’re extremely lucky. That’s why I laughed.”
“Is it really so difficult? After all the soul is finite right? Why would it take so long? I can go through a person’s memories in an instant and find whatever I wish.”
Nevius was surprised Kazuki was no longer mad about the tea but also felt relieved to see he could let things go if something interested him.
“Actually the soul is something that can grow and expand infinitely under the right circumstances. For that to happen though there are many requirements one being that you are at least as powerful as a God. For someone like you though, your soul is much smaller. Like a small grain of sand while a God’s soul is like a blazing star. The two are just vastly different. Although I compared your soul to a single grain of sand, the vastness it holds is like a Realm. If one does not know exactly where something is, it can be incredibly difficult to find it. For example your fractures. As for you being able to take hold of a person’s memories and experiences, that is merely you copying those things directly onto your own soul. If you were taking it directly, you would be removing a piece or even the entirety of that person’s soul.”
“Why is it so complicated?”
“The soul isn’t like a painting. You look at one piece and see thousands of details in it. You see every stroke of the brush and can tell where the artist applied more pressure here or there. The soul is far beyond that. It is everything that makes up who you are. Let’s take memory for example. Say you were sitting at a table just like this one and your friends were around chatting while some food was being cooked. In your mind only a few simple things took place. You, at a table your friends talking and about to eat but that isn’t what your soul took in. The food cooking around you, was that the only thing you actually smelled? What about the air itself, what about the dirt on the ground, the oil on your skin, and your friends, they each have a distinct smell some more flattering than others but do you see where I’m going with this? You thought you smelled only a single thing but in reality, you smelled hundreds of different things, possibly even thousands all at once, and as time went on during that meal, the scent of some things overwhelmed others while more scents lessened and so on. This takes a few thousand smells and multiplies them into millions. This is only a single part of that memory and that only covers the smell. What about what you saw, heard, tasted touched. This then becomes billions.”
Kazuki was stunned.
“Are you saying that these tiny details that didn’t even matter are a core to a person’s soul?”
Nevius shook his head.
“Not exactly a core but it is these tiny details that hide what’s important. For you to look into your soul for the fractures hidden away, it’s like trying to find a tiny needle in an ocean. This though is what a normal person’s soul would be like. There is another factor that turns the billions of details into trillions.”
“What! There’s something else that makes it that much harder?”
Kazuki began to think.
(If all of those tiny details are based off of a normal person’s senses then what multiplies it to such a degree…)
Just like that, it hit him.
“AURA!”
Nevius nodded along.
“A person’s aura senses far more than the body ever could and what is the aura, an extension, a tool of the soul itself. Stack on top of that the ability to sense magic and more with your aura, and the number climbs even further. That’s why I laughed. For a druid like myself, sensing these things and processing it all is much easier for me but for you, I could only find it laughable. Sorry.”
