Return of the Fallen Volume 10 Chapter 111
Nevius described how he narrowed down the Gosechu box’s location until he discovered it was inside the very Realm Kazuki and the others lived in. After that, he had to wait more and more until it was activated again.
“How long did you have to wait?”
“Not too long, a mere 6,000 thousand years before the Gosechu box activated. The box itself passed a few more hands until it landed in Dreunz’s possession. The way you two fought it out was quite surprising. His powers suddenly increased drastically before he crashed into the world like a falling meteor. You were quite lucky to have escaped that and make it out alive.”
Kazuki recalled that fight all too well. He had killed Dreunz’s grandson and even the Beast’s daughter died during the whole exchange. In the end, Dreunz consumed a strange blood orb and his powers climbed drastically for a limited time.
(If I hadn’t dove into the ground, I would have died. Even when I escaped deep down beneath the surface my body was still reduced to mush. If not for my extraordinary regenerative capabilities, I would be no more.)
Kazuki recalled that terrifying experience and felt lucky to be alive that day. After Dreunz died, he just so happened to pick up the Gosechu box. At that time he had no idea what it really was and even now he was still finding out more and more strange things about it.
“Why didn’t you just take it from Dreunz? No before that, why didn’t you just take it long before he even had hold of it. The moment you learn it was in this Realm, you should have snatched it up right away and used it. If it were me I would have killed whoever had it right in the beginning. With your power, you could have easily done so, right?”
Nevius didn’t deny the possibility.
“Killing them and taking it, I could have but It would have done me no good. As I told you before, the Gosechu box is more than it seems. It is a genuine artifact and it, therefore, possesses the ability to use Origin energy. If it possesses Origin energy then the possibility of it also possessing intelligence and sentience would also be extremely high. Remember these artifacts can bond with their users. If I would have come in and killed the person who had the Gosechu box and the Gosechu box had already formed a relationship with that person, tell me do you believe the Gosechu box would ever have allowed me to use it.”
Kazuki looked at the flying silk artifacts in the sky. The silk artifacts weren’t even under his control yet they stepped in ready to fight Kazuki the moment he threatened Nevius with his aura.
“So it would have been like you killed the Gosechu’s friend.”
“Exactly. Tell me Kazuki, if I killed someone you cared about, would you ever be willing to help me?”
“No. Instead I would do everything in my power to see to it that none of your goals are met and I would crush you beneath me.”
Nevius nodded along.
“Right you are. The box would never have allowed me to use it then. I had to think of a way to come into possessing it myself or getting someone who already owns it to help me. Since the moment I detected the Gosechu box in this Realm, it has always been in the hands of Ancient beasts or other disagreeables. Ancient beasts only accept others with power and would do no favors for anyone. I tried many routes. I tried making deals with their king at the time. I hoped I could get help through their king but that was pointless. I pleaded directly and offered many things but they never cared. All they wanted was power. Power to dominate all. They sounded exactly like those that killed my family. I had many means of fulfilling these wishes but I couldn’t let begins like that get more power. Even at the cost of my family’s souls, I couldn’t make such a deal.”
“But you can make such a deal with me. By fixing the damage to my soul, you would be helping me remove the block in my way and I would attain more power. You know I wish to become a Demigod and eventually a God. Are my goals and the Ancient beasts not one and the same?”
Nevius shook his head.
“No, they wanted power to dominate and rule everything but you on the other hand are similar to me. You want the power to take revenge. Not only that, I’ve already been witness to what it is you do when you come into power. Yes, you’ve killed but there can not be death without such powers. After the death though, you don’t murder indiscriminately. You’ve passed on a way for others to heal themselves of all forms of disease and injury. You spread crops across the world that prevents starvation. You’ve created a world of peace. As long as you stick along this path, you having more power…I don’t see it necessarily as a bad thing.”
“I thought you could sense my soul and you said I could go either way in terms of good or evil.”
“I did, and I still believe it to be true which is why I said as long as you stick to this path of peace. I believe you will. After coming so far in life, after facing death time and again, all of the hatred and all of the love, I believe there is more love than rage. Because of this belief, I have come to you. I believe that is the reason why the Gosechu box saved you.”
“Saved me?”
“Yes, when Zephris was still stuck in that Miasma form and you were on the verge of death.”
Kazuki’s mind jumped back to that time. He was completely surrounded on all sides by the miasma and it had already eaten his barrier. It was consuming him and it quickly outpaced his healing abilities and was eating and melting his body whole. Kazuki still had a small amount of power and was protecting his head as that was all that was left. Just as he was about to be fully consumed, he could sense a small amount of energy. he tried to use it to get away, it was his last hope but just before he could, the very next moment the Gosechu box appeared in mid-air.
“At that time I thought I was no more. I had so many regrets and everything was going dim and then the Gosechu box appeared. It warped and folded, changing shape many times before two lights shot out from it. One directly into the Miasma and the other directly into my forehead. After that, my memories and Zephris’s were forcefully exchanged. Because of that, I and Zephris could understand one another and communicate, we both knew that our enemies were the same and he helped me out of the Miasma. At that time I thought Zephris had done something to activate the Gosechu box but you’re saying that it was the Gosechu box itself that did it.”
Nevius closed his eyes in thought as he nodded.
“I have been watching that box for thousands of years and not once did it ever try and save any of its previous owners in any situation. It was then that I knew the relationship between you and the box was quite different. It was also then that I knew I had wasted many years. After all of this time, it never saved anyone. To me, this means its bond with the others before it was weak. I said these things can have intelligence and sentience and I believe this thing has been waiting. It’s been looking for someone for something and it never got that something from the others but the moment it saved you that day, I understood that you had been chosen by it. For what purpose I don’t know but it is an undeniable fact…you were chosen.”
Kazuki looked at the small box in his hand in wonderment.
“So it was you that saved me at that time. Thank you.”
*Bzzt*
A tiny arc of electricity buzzed and danced across the surface of the box and then along Kazuki’s fingertips as if it was responding favorably to his thanks.
Both Kazuki ad Nevius stared wide-eyed for a moment.
Nevius pointed at the box.
“You see Kazuki, it’s never done that with anyone else. It chose you to be its partner. Even if I wished to use it back then I now realize It wouldn’t have worked because the ones who possessed it before you weren’t capable of using more than a small amount of its power.”
“So what are you saying?”
“Kazuki, you who now hold it, you who have been chosen can bring out more of its power and you can help me. This is what I need from you, I need you to get the Box’s help, please Kazuki, I must find my family’s souls and you and this box are the only things capable of helping me.”
