Return of the Fallen Volume 11 Chapter 62
Marty’s sword came slashing down atop the demigod in front of her. Just before she cut the man down, he flew out of the way. A torrent of slashes came flashing out as Marty did not let her enemy flee too far. The Demigod was immediately placed in a bad spot and recalled his spear. It turned around in mid-air and came racing at Marty’s back. Marty ignored this spear, and her strength and speed suddenly increased by severalfold.
She closed the distance in an instant and before the demigod could use his spear properly, she thrust forward with the power of the wind. Silver light formed at the tip of her sword, and thousands of wind blades were unleashed at once.
The demigod’s body was torn apart in a single strike, and he became no more than tattered flesh and then dust. Just as his spear was on the verge of striking her, it suddenly stopped in the air before turning around to flee.
“Ya think ya can run from me!?”
Wind gathered beneath her feet, and her speed increased once again as she moved at an incredible speed. The very next instant she appeared directly in front of the fleeing spear and swung her sword once more.
“Wait! Don’t Do Thi
Before the demigod’s soul could finish his words, Marty had already cut the spear in half. His soul was destroyed then and there. A soft glow around the spear faded, and the broken spear fell to the ground. Marty held out her hand, and the broken spear disappeared into her ring. She then turned back around to help Kazuki, but she found it unnecessary.
Kazuki moved even faster than her, and each time he appeared and disappeared, dozens of enemies would die instantly. Marty had used three moves against her opponent, whereas Kazuki had used exactly three moves as well to take out his enemies.
Marty arrived next to Kazuki, and she could see he had a disappointed expression.
“What’s the matter?”
Kazuki shook his head.
“They were too weak.”
Marty raised a brow.
“What are ya bragging for, hehe.”
Kazuki wasn’t bragging. Almost all of these people were at the 7th stage, but Kazuki tore through them as if they were paper. This wasn’t what disappointed him, but rather the souls his soul-reading ability absorbed. He was so close; he was one small step away from reaching the demigod stage, and he just needed to absorb powerful souls, but the enemies he just absorbed were like a drop in the ocean. He needed much, much stronger opponents.
The sandworms were all tougher and had much stronger souls compared to those he just faced and near the end, their souls were no longer even making a dent for him. No, he needed someone above the 7th stage if he was to ever ascend to the next level.
“Um, brave warriors, I sincerely thank you both.”
The old man who was defending the door to the cabin took a few steps forward before bowing respectfully.
“My name is Simmons. I am a servant of the Cortail Merchant Family. You two have fended off our aggressors and saved my Master. For that, I am truly thankful.”
Not just this old man, but the remaining few survivors all put their weapons away before bowing as well.
“So what’s the reward?”
Marty had said to stay out of bigwigs business, but now she was asking about the reward with no reservations. Kazuki whispered to her.
“I thought we were supposed to be more cautious when it came to these types of people.”
Marty’s voice came back through Kazuki’s mind.
(That was before they were indebted to us. It would be different if we were just asking them for stuff, but they offered, and we saved their master. Everything is in our favor, not the other way around.)
(You’re talking through your mind now?)
Marty nodded.
(Yep, now that my powers are recovering and I don’t have to hold on to every ounce of it, I can waste some mental energy communicating like this. So convenient, heh.)
The man called Simmons quickly straightened his back and appeared more like a butler now than a fighter.
“I’m sorry! Forgive me, but I can give you nothing.”
Kazuki and Marty exchanged a look of confusion. Now it was Kazuki who was bold.
“What do you mean? You offered a great reward, but now after the job is done, you’re going back on your word.”
Kazuki said this with an intimidating air, but he did not threaten or suppress any of them with his aura. He still didn’t know who or what these people were. If they really wanted to go back on their word, there wouldn’t be much he could do besides kill them in retaliation, but he knew it would not be worth the risk. So if they truly had nothing, Kazuki would simply leave, even if he didn’t like it. Not only that, these people weren’t his enemies; to kill them over something so trivial, he wouldn’t go down that road.
Everyone took a few steps back in retreat. They had witnessed how fast the pair had dispatched their opponents and knew they were no match. The only one to not back down was Simmons, though he was clearly terrified as he shook in his boots. He bowed again before apologizing.
“I lied. I can offer you nothing. I am but a servant and made promises for the sake of my master. I have nothing to give, and for that, I am truly sorry. Please forgive me. If you wish to take your anger out on someone, please do so on me and me alone. No one else needs to be involved.”
The man then fell to his knees and awaited punishment. Again, Marty and Kazuki exchanged a look.
(Jentson, I think we should just leave. There’s no point in punishing this idiot. Let’s hurry to the city. Arc, it’s regretful but I don’t think you’ll be getting what you came for.)
Arc didn’t say anything, but Kazuki could tell Arc was annoyed. Since Arc could not get past the barrier protecting the cabin, and no reward came out of this, there was no longer any point in being here. Kazuki glanced at all the bodies and waved his hand. All of their storage rings entered his. Afterward, he and Marty were about to take off when a young voice came out from within the cabin.
“Wait a moment.”
Kazuki and Marty stopped. The barrier around the cabin was lowered, and Simmons began to panic.
“Master no. We don’t know what these people are; you could be in danger if you come out.”
“Shut up! I’ll decide what I do and no one else!”
Simmons bowed again and went silent. A second later, the doors to the cabinet opened, and a young child walked out.
The child was a boy. With a single glance, Kazuki could tell the kid was around 10. Dressed in fine robes laced in gold with gems and other accessories covering the child from head to toe, it was a bit ridiculous. Attached to the boy was an air of superiority, but taking one look at his power, Kazuki could sense he was only at the 3rd stage. A child as young as he is a Lower Realm would be considered a genius with such power at this age, but Kazuki couldn’t care less.
In his eyes, the boy was a boy and nothing more. Fancy shit hanging around his neck and on his fingers, Kazuki just felt it would be poor for combat purposes.
The young kid had dark brown hair and bright yellow eyes. The moment he stepped out, his little hands were on his hips, and he stared at Kazuki and Marty.
…
It was silent for a few moments before the kid got annoyed and then angry before yelling at Simmons.
“Simmons! Why have you not introduced me yet!?”
“Forgive me, young master. You ordered me to shut up so I just
“Shut up with the excuses and hurry up and introduce me.”
The young boy interrupted and took his frustrations out on Simmons as he demanded to be introduced.
Simmons quickly waved a hand toward the young boy.
“Sir and lady, this young man before you is my master. This is Samuel Cortail, the 4th son of the Cortail Merchant Family. Today you have saved his life, and we are all grateful.”
“Simmons, that’s enough. I want to know who they are.”
Simmons smiled awkwardly before looking at the pair.
Marty pointed at herself with a smile as she introduced herself.
“People call me Marty, and this here is Jentson. So your butler fellow promised us a reward. Are you going to fulfill that or not?”
The child furrowed his brows.
“Simmons, why is this one so rude with her way of speaking? You, woman, you need to kneel when you speak to me. Otherwise, I would take great offense, and the man next to you, he’s your manservant, right? Why is he standing there with such a vile expression? Hey, you kneel to me as well.”
