Return of the Fallen Volume 13 Chapter 80
Mefius had finished his speech and called upon Editrix.
“Editrix, how much deviation can we expect after the little accident?”
Editrix shook his small, green head.
“Master, this whole test is unprecedented. I am dealing with the unknown. This magitech is ancient, and those who understood it have long since been slai…lost to us. It is already difficult to know the precise details. Adding in a factor such as that soldier getting caught up in the mix…”
Editrix paused there as he saw Mefius growing angrier and angrier. His long ears twitched and his shoulders sank before he quickly got straight to the point.
“I mean, so long as the enemy is within a certain area, the accuracy should not matter much as they will be well within Bodocks range. He will surely succeed Master.”
Mefius’s expression softened and he chuckled.
“So serious Editrix. I understand how hard you’ve worked and haven’t forgotten. Your ability and that glove has proven worth. Out of everyone, your efforts have shown through the brightest. When this is all over and I have what is owed. You shall reap a great reward. One planet of your choice, a paradise shaped in whatever image you wish. It will be yours and yours alone.”
Mefius smirked as Editrix’s gaze almost glazed over at just the thought of it all.
(To be a king of my own world. Everyone will bow to me and obey me. Something just for me and me alone. How magnificent that will be!)
Editrix’s weary and exhausted expression brightened greatly and he wore a stupid smile. Just as he was lost in thought and fantasizing about his future spoils, Mefius poured cold water on his dream.
“However, if this has all proved to be nothing more than a failure. You shall enjoy an equal punishment. YOu know what the opposite of having everything is do you not? The consequences of failing me, there is only one outcome.”
Mefius gently placed a hand on Editirx’s small shoulder and grinned. Even though he did this with a soft touch, to Editrix, along with his previous words, this was a weight that could not be lifted. Editrix felt his soul tremble in fear and he prayed that his power had not failed his master. He did not wish to have an untimely and certain death.
Mefius walked past him toward Kazuki and the other beasts. As he walked through the field the crowd of soldiers and servants parted and formed around him like a cloak. These Gerians prayed and hoped that Mefius would succeed.
Kazuki could read all of their souls and realized that what they thought Mefius wanted and what he really wanted were like night and day.
(These people believe Mefius is doing all of this to rid this Realm of shriekers. They believe he will bring peace and prosperity to all but the truth is truly dark. In reality, Mefius only wants power and according to Yidriss, he will do anything to claim the powers of the primordial being.)
Kazuki did not know if Yidriss spoke the absolute truth but the more he observed things around him, the more he believed it to be fact. What he didn’t understand was why Bodock or Verick would go along with all of this.
(Bearon seems to be under Mefius’s thumb due to Runa but Verick and Bodock. Don’t they understand what the future entails for them if they continue down this path? In order to absorb all of the primordial one’s powers than can be no other vessels, no other living beings. If there is, the primordial one’s power will be divided into fragments and will be spread out to more individuals. Only if there is no one, and nothing else will all of that power stay together and enter a single entity.)
Mefius came over to Kazuki and Monsuta. Monsuta couldn’t help but take half a step back causing the ground to shake slightly.
“You’re friend seems terrified of me Kazuki. Its instincts are quite sharp. From what I recall, the sharptooth’s were a dumb species. Well, I guess instinct and intelligence remain split.”
Many servants and soldiers were shocked by how casually Mefius spoke to Kazuki. He did not speak to him as if he were a slave but rather something above. Not equal to him in any capacity but at least not like waste. None of them had ever experienced such treatment and were envious. Verut as well was jealous to some degree but he was also kind of proud for some reason.
Kazuki looked toward Verut and Verut flicked his tail a sif to say the master is speaking to you, say something back.
“Monsuta is not dumb. He knows more than most creatures and is very creative.”
This time the servants were pissed. There was no respect in Kazuki’s tone at least not one they could detect. Mefius chuckled again.
“There it is. You can act meek all you want but behind it, I can see a true killer. Just those few words, words that hold no anger and no hostility yet also contain little fear. The rest of them, they all look at me with admiration as well as terror. You on the other hand are closer to neutral. I wonder what you’re thinking of right now.”
Mefius’s words were simple but there was a tone of goading within. It was as if he was taunting Kazuki and was personally looking for a particular reaction. Kazuki was no fool though. He had understood the warning clearly from earlier. Acting out, and pushing things is the exact thing that would lead to his demise.
At the same time if he remained silent when Mefius was addressing him directly it would be an insult and with the way Mefius snapped randomly, it was not wise to keep his mouth shut. He had to speak in a way that would keep Mefius appeased yet at the same time not piss him off or challenge his authority. Kazuki nodded and kept things as light as possible.
“I did have some thoughts.”
“Oh, do tell human.”
Kazuki rubbed the back of his head.
“I was wondering when it was time to eat, hehe.”
Mefius and everyone else there stared blankly for a moment. A strange silence spread across the entire field and not a sound was heard for several seconds before Mefius broke out in laughter. His laughter signaled that it was ok to laugh and so eveyrone joined in. ell everyone except Verick. As per usual, Verick wore his same calm expression.
Mefius grabbed Kauzki by his shoulders.
“You are supposed to have many skills and abilities, at least that’s the talk around here and you also said this sharptooth is creative. Good, Who knows when Bodock will return? It has been a while since I’ve had any decent entertainment.”
Mefius shouted looked over the crowd and shouted.
“Everyone off the field. Kazuki and his sharptooth friend will be displaying some of their abilities for us to enjoy. We’ll have a bit of a show until my brother returns.”
Everyone scattered without hesitation and soon the other beasts were cleared off the field along with all of the servants and soldiers.
(Kauzki what should we do? I don’t like this. These ugly creatures are very cruel. If they don’t like what we do they might just kill and eat us or something. Maybe they’ll do something even worse and melt us like they did the others. I’m scared Kazuki.)
(Monsuta, we can’t just stand around and do nothing. You’ve seen the way Mefius is. His attitude flips with every passing moment. It’s humiliating but let us put on a show for this bastard. At least we can prolong our life for a little while longer while my plan comes together.)
Monsuta nodded. He hated the Gerians and was also afraid of them. All he wanted to do was return to his cave and carve more statues and golems and play but he was trapped here for now. All he could do was follow Kazuki and suck it up for a while more.
…
“Well Kazuki, entertain us, don’t just stand there looking ugly.”
Mefius threw abuse here and there, and Kazuki could only sigh inwardly.
(Monsuta, let’s do it like this.)
…
Very quickly, Kazuki ripped a large piece of land from the ground and split it into two. He then began to carve something out of one of the pieces, while Monsuta used his tail to carve the other piece.
In a few seconds, the two had finished. Kazuki had made an ape-shaped golem. This ape golem was based on one of the ape-like creatures of this world, only this one was a fraction of the size.
Monsuta made a golem as well that looked similar to a large lizard they had encountered a few times. Kazuki instantly carved several inscriptions into both of the golems, and with the element of fire, the two golems began to move.
(Monsuta, let’s show them something interesting.)
