Making his way to his room, Kazuki walked in to see a man finishing repairs to the wall he had destroyed.
The man carried a long flat wooden board and held it against the wall. Grabbing a nail from his mouth he proceeded with great strength to simply push the nail into the wall as though it were nothing much. Taking another loose nail from his mouth he repeated the same action on the opposite side as well until the wall was fully repaired. Taking a step back he eyed the wall before giving a nod, appreciating his own craftsmanship.
“Thanks for fixing that, I’m sure the couple on the other side are grateful as well.”
The handyman just now noticed Kazuki and the other’s presence. With a small nod, he gathered his things and left.
Mei walked over to the bed and placed a hand over it. A small ring glowed with a dim purple light and a few items gently fell onto the bed.
Kazuki had gotten storage items for everyone ack at old man Sid’s craft shop. Mei had been too excited and begged Kazuki repeatedly to have it now and Kazuki relented. There was no reason to wait to give it to her so he minus well he thought.
Tsura as well wore a similar ring upon her hand. She already had a small storage item. It was a tooth in her mouth, this is what she usually carried spare clothes for her and Mei for after they transformed, now she had another. At first, she tried to not receive such a gift. Kazuki had already saved her and her daughter and done so much but Kazuki convinced her, that it would come in handy.
With them set to travel further, you never know what you might run into and you’ll be wishing you had more storage space when the time came. With that argument, there was not much to disagree with so she took it.
Kazuki’s real reason was actually much simpler. He wanted someone to carry the extra items he couldn’t. Sure he could have worn more storage rings on his hands but he felt that would make him look too gaudy. No, he wasn’t much into fashion but still, he felt he would look like a douche bag, were he to walk around with so many rings on his fingers. He would have just boughten a storage item with a larger capacity but this town was a small one and didn’t carry such expensive items.
Inspecting the items on the bed, Kazuki found little use for them. These were the damaged items from SId’s shop he was forced to buy. He didn’t look at the items themselves rather the inscriptions they held.
One had a spell to produce a simple gas similar to a natural gas. It was a small lantern used for lighting the way. It could convert regular oxygen in the air into something more flammable. As long as it had power it could stay lit basically indefinitely. Someone that had a few elemental crystals to spare or a Mage that couldn’t use light magic or fire magic would find this useful but currently, it was damaged and Kazuki didn’t even know if it still worked.
Testing it briefly, it lit fine but it quickly made popping noises as it was converting oxygen too quickly. It seemed to work but it could be problematic.
The main issue though was that he himself could use fire magic. With his ancient hand signs, he could use any magic as long as he had enough time. The only real problem was how efficient it would be. Since he himself was a main with the element of fire a secondary with dark and a third with earth, using the ancient hand signs he could materialize and manipulate these much more freely then he could the other elements. The difference in using them was the time required, the power it took and the effect he could produce.
Looking at the lantern, he simply tossed it to Mei.
“Store this one away, maybe you or someone else can use it for a fire when but be careful with it and only use it for a moment or two, otherwise don’t blame me.”
Mei nodded and put the lantern back into her ring.
Looking over the rest of the items, they all appeared to be worthless junk. Kazuki handed it over to Tsura and she stored those items as well.
Mei played with her ring. As she sat on the bed, she continuously withdrew the only item within her ring, the lantern and put it back. As she did this, Tsura had a thought.
“Um, Ryuta. What will happen to our rings once we transform?”
Kazuki turned to her and nearly slapped his forehead.
(Shit, I never thought of that.)
“Damn, if the two of you change, I wouldn’t be surprised if the rings broke from your body’s expansion. Well, you might actually be fine Tsura, after all, your body only grows about a foot and a half taller but Mei on the other hand…”
Tsura and Kazuki both looked at Mei quizzically.
“Mei, sorry but It looks like you’ll have to give me that ring back.”
Mei sprung to her feet and backed into a corner while holding covering her ring with her other hand.
“NO!”
Tsura tried to comfort her.
“Mei mei, it can’t be helped. If you keep that ring on and transform it might break or even hurt you when you fully transform. Your Mangshi form is just too big.”
Mei’s eyes began to tear up.
“No no no. I promise not to transform or I won’t grow anymore, so please don’t take my ring.”
Mei begged to keep the ring. For some reason, she was quite attached to it.
Seeing that neither of them was getting anywhere, Kazuki decided to lay down the law.
“MEI! give me the ring right now!”
Mei started to cry and she slowly took the ring off and walked over. Every step of hers was filled with sadness but eventually, she handed it over.
Tsura held her daughter and pat her head repeatedly.
“Now now Mei mei, don’t cry. We are only doing this because we have to. You don’t want to break it do you?”
Mei continued to cry loudly and nothing seemed to comfort her.
(Is this my life now, seriously.)
Kazuki thought for a moment before an idea came to him and he headed downstairs briefly. A few moments later, he returned and tossed something to Mei.
Mei though had eyes full of tears and didn’t see the item and wound up getting hit in the head with it instead.
(Shit.)
The item landed on the ground and Mei realizing that Kazuki had hit her with something began to cry even louder. Tsura looked at Kazuki venomously and was about to give him an earful for hitting Mei in the head with something until she looked down at said item. As soon as she recognized at what it was her glare became soft and she smiled at him.
Picking it up, she held it in front of Mei and said.
“Mei mei, look at what this is.”
Mei wiped the tears and snot away and looked at what her mother held in her hand. To Mei’s surprise, it was a pair of earrings.
The tears flowing like a river stopped and Mei held the golden earrings in her hands. Staring at them with disbelief she whispered.
“These are?”
Kazuki sighed in relief at the newfound silence before he replied.
“You saw those yesterday, remember? Those are Betra’s earrings. They can be used just like a magic ring and they are also a storage item. As long as you stop crying, you can keep them.”
Mei’s big eyes were still a bit teary as she looked up at Kazuki.
“These are for me, really?”
Kazuki nodded.
“As long as you don’t cry, then yes.”
Mei ran forward and buried her face into Kazuki’s stomach. hugging Kazuki, she then proceeded to lift him off the ground in pure bliss.
“Thank you thank you thank you!”
“Remeber this is only if you don’t cry, got it?”
Mei removed her face from Kazuki and looked up at him with a bright smile.
“I won’t, I promise.”
(Oh my god…that’s disgusting.)
Mei slowly separated from Kazuki and a line of snotty boggers trailed between her and his shirt. Right now she was anything but cute and looked more akin to a sewer monster, at least that’s what Kazuki felt at the moment.
He slowly pushed Mei away before taking off his shirt carefully, so as to not spread the green disaster zone any further. As soon as his shirt was away from his body, he threw it into the corner of the room and shivered.
Tsura realized the problem and grabbed the shirt embarrassingly.
“Not to worry Ryuta, I’ll take care of your shirt immediately. Please wait and I’ll be back in a moment.”
Kazuki nodded and Tsura rushed out of the room without closing the door. It was at this exact time that Betra came walking by.
She absentmindedly walked into the room with a handful of gold Zeni.
“On second thought this amount may be way too much for me. There’s no way I can accept…”
Before she finished her sentence, Betra looked up at the situation in the room. There she saw Mei with a face full of tears and Kazuki without a shirt. The money in her hands was quickly thrown to the ground and she had slapped Kazuki without a second thought. Jumping in front of Mei, she shouted at Kazuki with hatred in her voice.
“YOU FIEND! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?”
