(The attack from the birds has some connection between Sam and the Magnitium?)
Danny’s statement left even Kazuki deep in thought.
It wasn’t long before questions came flying in right and left and Shin was no exception and chimed in.
“Eh, how can that be? We all saw the birds repeatedly go after Sam and what you said about it being a predator type instinct to take out the biggest threat makes perfect sense, so what’s changed?”
“Birds, at least migrating ones, tend to have a sense which helps them to determine the planet’s magnetic field so they can navigate and travel true north. Now I know nothing about the animals of this world but if my theory is true then it all makes sense.”
“Theory this and theory that, can you just say whatever it is you’re trying to say and stop acting so self-important. We get it, you have the biggest brain here so can you just freaking tell us already.”
This was one of the reasons why Danny didn’t have any friends back on Earth. He would seemingly go into every minute detail and either bore people with the way he talks or anger those that thought he was looking down on them with his know it all attitude. And this is exactly why Kimi snapped just now.
Sam gave her a rebuking look and her expression saddened before she sighed and apologized.
*Haa*
“Sorry, I and I’m sure everyone else here just wants to know what’s going on. So, if you don’t mind…”
Danny rolled his eyes at her comments but he could see that people were beginning to reach their limit.
“I believe those birds were attacking Sam not because they saw him as an obstacle that was in the way of a meal but instead I think they couldn’t see properly or instead sense their environment like they usually do.”
Question marks appeared in everyone’s head and Danny ignored their quizzical expressions and continued.
“As soon as we stepped into this village, the birds immediately retreated. At first, I thought maybe they might have reached their limit and needed to rest but once we discovered these Magnitium rocks and found out their uses, something clicked. After attacking us time and time again and chasing us for hours, two of us were injured and all of us were clearly tired. Meanwhile, they had one that was injured but could still pursue us to no end and there was an even bigger one, hovering above us in wait.”
Danny reached into his pocket and pulled out two different black feathers. One was only 3 inches or so in length while the other was around 7 inches or so.
“This smaller one was from the bird that Ryuta had stabbed in the chest, while this longer one was from the one following in wait. Comparing feathers alone, I’d say this one is at least 2 1/2 maybe even 3 times bigger than the other ones. It is clear as day between our group and theirs, the advantage lay with them.”
Kazuki couldn’t help but admire Danny a bit. Kazuki had thought that only he had noticed the bigger one following from high up but Danny had not only noticed but also managed to grab a few feathers along the way.
(This kid is very bright.)
“Not only did those birds have the advantage but while Kimi was leading us around, the terrain she chose was one that was thick and dense with trees. Because of this, the birds had difficulty in descending upon us and picking up momentum to ram us like, well, battering rams. However, when we found this village, did no one notice our surroundings…Not a tree in sight. Moreover, the buildings here are mostly made from wood while this one and only a few others seem to be constructed from stone. This building may be stone but to those birds, they should easily be able to break open this village hall like cracking an egg.”
Everyone had a sudden realization and looked around the room in fear, as though at any moment the ceiling would come crashing down.
“Relax, as I said, they seem to have a certain relationship with this place, which makes them stay away. The question remains, why did they leave as soon as we came upon this place when they clearly could have dealt a fatal blow to such tired and weakened enemies. The answer…”
Danny picked up one of the Magnitium fragments from the ground and held it under the light.
“Did anyone notice all those elongated rocks spread everywhere throughout the village. Just guessing, but by my estimations, I put it at a few hundred or so and that was just what we saw when we first entered this village. I don’t doubt there’s plenty more. Those rocks are Magnitium as well and all of them are dozens of times bigger than the fist-sized rock that you smashed on the ground.”
Asuna and the others couldn’t help but pick up a fragment or two for themselves and inspect them.
“Those birds have no eyes so they can not see in the traditional sense, so then how do they hunt, how do they not crash into everything? At first, I thought it was their screech and was a form of echolocation but after witnessing the first bird be so accurate in its attacks while it was fighting everyone at once, I threw that idea out of the window because it was not constantly screeching. The effect we did see from the screech though was an absence of sound but once again if there is no sound how can they use echolocation…The answer, of course, is they can’t. Then how are they seeing us? I thought of plenty of other ways, sensing temperature feeling small vibrations and so on but none of it seemed to fit. That is until these rocks.”
A bulb seemed to go off in everyone’s heads.
(Does he mean…)
Danny could tell that the dots were finally connecting for everyone.
“Now if those birds have a magnetic sense of some sort and these rocks have their own magnetic field, then imagine what these rocks must do to them. I believe they see with this magnetic sense and when they sensed Sam who shares similar properties with these rocks, their vision must have become partly fuzzy or clouded. So when they attacked him, it may have been as simple as his body or the magic he has, it was blocking their vision. This leaves them vulnerable and reveals a weakness and their first instinct was to remove said weakness, aka, kill Sam.”
Danny looked at Sam and nodded to himself.
“When they see you or rather when they sense you it must seem like a black void in their detecting ability. So when they flew above this village that is stuffed full of these Magnitium rocks. It must have been like looking into a black abyss of death. You, Sam, who is a little over 6 feet, they could deal with but this village must seem like a black hole of death and as soon as they sensed it, they turned tail and ran for their lives. This is my theory.”
Nunully thought for a moment before she wondered out loud.
“If that’s so then how does it work exactly? Sam has his own storage of energy within him. If they sensed his Mage core that had the so-called similar properties, then yes, I agree it makes sense but what about all of the Magnitium spread around this village, What is their power source? The rocks seem to be rather basic without power so how could they affect the birds without some supply of power?”
“That’s.”
Danny began but was immediately stumped. He had thought deeply about this but had overlooked something so simple. He himself began to wonder as well. Everyone went silent for a while as they too thought about this conundrum.
(Should I give them a hand.)
Kazuki thought. He too had become interested in Danny’s theory and came up with a few thoughts about the power source.
(If it comes to a power source there could actually be quite a few. Some of which don’t rely on someone constantly watching over and feeding in a source of energy.)
Danny though came up with a reason.
“They’re all connected!”
Nunully curiously asked.
“They’re what?”
Danny turned to her and smiled.
“They are all connected. Remember when the magnetic field from the fragment in Sam’s hand connected to all the other fragments on the ground. It linked up with them like an invisible chain and spread out its magnetic field. Those Magnitium rocks outside are either in close enough proximity to one another which connects their magnetic fields naturally or there’s some source of power somewhere in this broken-down village that powers them. There must be a magic tool somewhere nearby that can control its properties, otherwise, with that much power flowing into those rocks, our swords would have flown away from us long ago. The only thing now though is going about proving whether my guesses are correct or not.”
Kazuki leaned over and asked.
“And how do you suggest we do that?”
“Well, this village isn’t very big and it’s not like we have much else to do right now, so how about we look for the power source and the magic tool.”
