The group had finished their food but didn’t get up to leave. As Mei and Tsura chatted along happily with one another, Nunully wondered what was up. Leaning over she whispered quietly.
“Kazuki, what are we doing? I mean what’s the plan? You seem to have something on your mind.”
Kazuki’s eyes made its way around the room as he covertly looked over the patrons. Without looking back to Nunully he calmly said.
“We need money.”
“Money? Aren’t we just gonna head further north, what good will money do us in the middle of nowhere?”
Kazuki sipped at his beer and wiped his mouth.
“Money may be useless in the middle of nowhere but it still has its uses here. We need to get you and me reequipped. Although I reforged my core and can now use magic more freely, my magic can reach its limit pretty quickly while swinging a sword, and using my stamina is a hell of a lot more efficient. Not just that we need supplies but one of the most important reasons is we have no clue where we’re going and we need to buy a map.”
“What are you talking about. Aren’t we just heading to the Rin mountain range? Mother said her friend was there and that this person would protect me, that it would be safe with them.”
“It’s not as simple as you think. We’re going to the Rin mountain range but as far as I can tell, there are no cities, towns or villages past the next city. How are we supposed to find this person exactly? Does he or she live in a hut at the top of one of those mountains or do they live in a secluded cave somewhere halfway up? We have no way of knowing. I stupidly overlooked such a simple thing when your mother asked me to deliver you there but at the time I was more worried about escaping Tresta. If we go searching all willy nilly, it’ll be like trying to find a specific grain of sand among a beach.”
Nunully finally understood.
“Ok but how does a map find this person?”
Kazuki shook his head.
“It doesn’t but we should at least have a map so we know the way. Plus if I have a map I may be able to find clues of this person whereabouts. I can at least point out the spots where they shouldn’t be due to terrain and other factors. I should be able to narrow the search down a bit. Besides this may take multiple trips in and out of the mountain before we find some clues. We’ll need plenty of necessities.”
Kazuki started to devour the meat skewer in front of him. It wasn’t half bad in his opinion and he wondered who had cooked it.
“Nunully, did your mother ever mention this friend of hers before? Did she ever describe what he or she looked like, anything at all? Even something in passing may help.”
Nunully went quiet for a while in thought but no matter how she racked her brain nothing came to mind.
“Sorry, before she mentioned she had such a friend I didn’t even know that she had ever traveled outside of the capital. Mother is very flirtatious and outward but she rarely ever talked about her past. I…I really don’t know.”
Kazuki sighed inwardly.
(This is gonna be a bit harder then I thought.)
Nunully interrupted his thoughts and stared at him with a hopeful gaze.
“Kazuki, you…you don’t have to take me to that place. I…I could always just stay with you, right?”
“If you did that, how would you ever reunite with your mother? She said she would head there after she finished her business in the capital. How would she feel were she to arrive and you were not there? What would she think happened to her daughter? I may not be the best type of person but I will still finish this and escort you to safety.”
Nunully lowered her head, a feeling of both disappointment as well as bitterness filling her heart.
Kazuki and Nunully’s conversation piqued Tsura’s interest.
“If the goal is money, how exactly are you going to go about getting it? I don’t know much about human cities but I’m pretty sure they won’t accept it if you continually go around beating people up and robbing them, even if they are criminals.”
Mei jumped it after her mother.
“Eh! Why can’t we beat up more meanies and take their shiny moneys? Especially when they call me lamb, well I guess lamb isn’t too bad but it’s only tasty. I shouldn’t be called one. Yep, as long as they call me sheep, we have to beat them up, right big bro?”
Mei was deciding stuff on her own. Tsura shoved another piece of meat in her mouth to get her to stop talking, while Nunully and Kazuki both chuckled at her cuteness.
“No, I like your idea Mei but doing it that way will take far too long. Instead, I’ll be making money with the flick of a wrist. First I need to find a suitable place, which is why we came here.”
No one knew what he meant when he said hed make money with the flick of a wrist and they were left even more confused when he said he came here because of it. Kazuki stood up and was about to walk off when Nunully pulled at his sleeve.
“Wh…where are you going? Are you about to earn the money right now?”
“No, I have to use the restroom. I did just have plenty of beers and they are on there way out. So if you wouldn’t mind Nunully, could you please let me go. That is unless you’d like to go with me.”
Nunully’s cheeks flushed red but she didn’t say no right away. Kazuki felt a chill down his spine for a moment when Nunully looked like she was really contemplating it.
Kazuki pulled his sleeve away and hurriedly said.
“Uhh, that was a joke.”
Nunully’s face flushed even brighter and even her ears took on a pinkish hue. She quickly buried her head in her hand in shame.
Kazuki walked into the restroom and stood in front of a urinal. Just as he was relieving himself a familiar figure walked in followed by a few others.
*Shinck shinck shinck*
Kazuki heard several blades being unsheathed behind him and got a sense of Deja Vu before he remembered what happened back in Edngaul.
One of the men spoke.
“You fucking asshole. Your little boy surprised us earlier but now your in here all alone.”
Kazuki recognized the voice. It was the main thug that tried to rob him in the alley.
(Wow this is actually happening. I’m really getting ambushed in the bathroom again.)
Kazuki laughed inwardly and spoke with no concern.
“So what is it you guys want exactly, my autograph maybe? You said you run the streets or something right? So that should make me famous for having my kid beat you all up. Give me a moment ok, I’m almost through here.”
The large man grew infuriated hearing Kazuki spout this bull shit while taking a piss. Not only was Kazuki calm and showed no fear but he was also very arrogant. The large man and the thugs beside him all looked at one another like [ is this guy for real. ] Not only that, they felt something was off with the way Kazuki spoke. Kazuki looked like a country bum and was even hunched over like a feeble old man but right now he stood straight and firm and had almost no semblance of someone who was old or weak.
One of the thugs didn’t care about this at all and sauntered up behind Kazuki before placing his blade on Kazuki’s neck.
“You piece of shit sure know how to talk, don’t cha.”
Seeing their friend easily take advantage of Kazuki, the others no longer felt anything was off. Kazuki though shook his head at the fools. The thug with his blade at Kazuki’s throat almost freaked out because as Kazuki shook his head, his neck naturally rubbed against the blade. However, he stood there absolutely stunned as the natural thing didn’t happen. As Kazuki shook his head back and forth, there was no blood nor a terrible slice or gash. As a matter of fact, there was no wound at all.
The thug instinctively pulled his blade away. He didn’t really intend to kill Kazuki, only to kick his ass and scare him a bit but seeing Kazuki rub his own neck against the blade freaked him out. He looked cautiously at Kazuki’s neck. Seeing nothing there, not even a mark, the man examined his blade and touched its edge, cutting himself.
(What, it’s sharp so how?)
Unfortunately, this is where the man’s thoughts ended because in the very next moment an elbow came hurtling towards his face.
*Thwack*
The man was thrown into one of his friends and the two collapsed to the ground. Kazuki turned around in midstream and grunted as though he were annoyed by some pesky flys.
“Fine I get it you want my autograph so here you go.”
Kazuki’s hips swung in a circular motion and his yellow gold was sprayed all over in front of him. The few beers that Kazuki drank ran right through him and in turn covered these thugs from head to toe. The men were so shocked that they were actually stunned for a moment and froze on the spot, not knowing what to do.
Kazuki shook and put it away before patting his hands.
“There, that autograph should be worth several gold Zeni at some pint in the future. So if I were you lot, I’d refrain from washing it away, otherwise, you’d be throwing a treasure down the drain, literally, Bwahahaha!”
