Kazuki sat down at a large round table, Mei was curious and hoped in his lap to watch. Several people were dressed in fancy clothes and smelled of money. When they saw Kazuki covered in filth with a hunched back they felt disgusted and many of them got up and left right away. In the center of the table, a young woman wearing a blue vest with a white shirt underneath and black slacks stood in front of Kazuki with a dumbfounded look.
(The guards actually allowed this dirtball inside. Those lazy bastards are probably slacking off.)
The woman set a golden cup down as well as a set of four dice onto the table and wore a fake smile.
“Sir, are you aware that this is a high betting table? The lowest amount you may bet at this table is one gold, Zeni. If sir doesn’t have it I’m afraid…”
The woman only made it to about there before Kazuki pulled out the single gold Zeni he had just received from the female guard and slapped it onto the table. Smiling with a black and toothy grin, he said.
“Are ye gonna take ma money or aren’t cha?”
The woman’s smile almost vanished when she saw Kazuki’s dirty hand but she was a professional and managed to maintain it.
“As you wish.”
Tsura and Nunully stood beside Kazuki and watched what he was doing with interest.
The woman picked up the golden cup and swiped it over the four dices one at a time while shaking the cup. Several inscriptions lit up on the cup to prevent experts and those with special abilities from seeing within the cup or manipulating the dice. Kazuki though was different.
The woman slammed the cup on the table, the dice still hidden she announced to Kazuki and one other man who had stayed at the table.
“Odd or even, high or low, sirs, please place your bets now. After 10 seconds bets will no longer be taken and the numbers will be revealed.”
This was the exact game Kazuki had scammed back in Tresta. Placing his hands on the table, Kazuki sent a tiny amount of ki poking and prodding at the table and sure enough, just like in Tresta there were 2 magnetic switches to change the dice under the cup from odd numbers to even and from low numbers to high and vice versa.
(It’s good to see that even here these illegal casinos are still trying to play people. Then don’t mind me playing back.)
On the table, there were a few letters in front of each player. O for odd, E for even, H for high, and L for low. Kazuki’s ki felt the surface of the dice and he could see them with his senses. Placing his gold Zeni down on the letter E before him, he waited for the lady to reveal the dice. As she did, she saw that Kazuki had one. Though she had seen this a million times before and didn’t really care. Paying Kazuki, she nonchalantly scooped up the dice with the golden cup and again shook the dice around wildly before slapping the cup down again and announcing.
“Odd or even, high or low, place your bets now. After 10 seconds, bets will no longer be taken and the numbers will be revealed.”
In this way, Kazuki quickly accumulated several thousand gold Zeni. Tsura and Nunully joined him at the table and he had given him some of his money so they could try their hand as well. Apparently, the two were very curious to see if they could do the same. That became boring for the two very soon though when they realized they simply had to match Kazuki’s bets and they would win. Eventually, the two left to wander around the casino to try other games.
With the coins Kazuki gave them, they should be able to play around for an hour or two. By this time, Kazuki had ordered some food and a few drinks. Kazuki gambled away while Mei sat in his lap and ate some tasty treats while sipping on some juice. The sight of the two started to draw in some spectators. Seeing an old dirty man pushing piles of gold onto the table and winning like crazy, while a small child ate a mountain of food and smacked her lips repeatedly in delight, it was an interesting sight.
It wasn’t long before several people could see that Kazuki was more than lucky and sat down with him and began to personally follow his bets and bet exactly what he would. Kazuki found this fun. At the same time, he couldn’t just win repeatedly without some suspicion falling on him so he changed his strategy up and began to lose at certain times. Those that had followed his bets soon found themselves losing and wining like the tides of the ocean and found it to be a rollercoaster of emotion.
Sometimes they would be up like crazy and other times they would be near rock bottom. They found this way of gambling to be too much for them and the crowd that had gathered dispersed and gathered and dispersed again. It was truly interesting to watch. Every now and again Kazuki would curse under his breath, while other times he would shout and pump his fist in the air with glee.
People that thought he may have been cheating in the beginning now believed that he was just a crazy somewhat lucky fool. Kazuki played his part so well that he even went down to only a few Zeni before he again climbed back up to several thousand.
After about an hour or so of this, Mei had grown bored. With her stomach full and nothing to do, she wanted to go and explore but Kazuki didn’t see Tsura or Nunully in sight and couldn’t just let her wander off on her own.
“Ok little one. I’ll finish this up in just a moment.”
The dice were shaken again and the cup slammed down onto the table.
“Odd or even, high or low, place your bets now. After 10 seconds, bets will no longer be taken and the numbers will be revealed.”
Kazuki didn’t hesitate and pushed all of his money onto one spot.
Up to this point, he had never risked everything and the lady was slightly taken aback by this. However, she was a professional and looked around the table at everyone’s bets without a break in character. Seeing that their were no more bets she gently tapped something under the table without anyone’s notice, well except for Kazuki. Kazuki grinned inwardly and a small tendril of ki stretched out from him. He felt the dice flip in a certain way and in response, he gently flipped them back.
The woman hadn’t noticed this and revealed the dice. As soon as she saw the numbers, her face went blank. Kazuki whispered gently.
“Miss, miss, whats da matter wit u?”
This odd accent pulled her back to her senses and she again wore that fake smile.
(How did this happen? I’m sure I flipped the switch so how?)
The woman paid everyone out who was owed and collected from those that lost. As she pushed over a pile of gold Zeni to Kazuki she stared at the old man curiously. Kazuki in return flashed his black toothy grin and pointed at his old wrinkled face.
“Mis, is dere sumin onma face? I kno its hansom but I already got a missus somewhere round ere.”
Kazuki scanned the room as though he were looking for his wife. A few people at the table laughed from that and the woman’s face turned a few shades red. Whether it was from embarrassment, anger, or both only she knew. She finished pushing the money to Kazuki and Kazuki waved his hand over the table.
His ring glowed with a dull purple and the thousands of gold Zeni disappeared in a flash. This actually surprised some of the guests at the table as well as the lady dealing the dice. From his appearance, they all assumed Kazuki was dirt poor but he actually had a storage ring which could cost several hundred gold Zeni at its cheapest and upwards to hundreds of thousands if not millions at its highest. They didn’t understand why he was so poor when he had such a ring that could be sold and could directly raise him up and out of poverty.
Kazuki grabbed Mei’s little hand and walked away with his hunched back at a slow pace.
*Ding ding ding ding ding*
Kazuki and Mei had only walked a few feet when they heard a chorus of bells going off on the second floor. Kazuki didn’t see Nunully or Tsura anywhere in sight and so he headed upstairs to in curiosity. He wanted to see what all the commotion was about. A hundred or so feet away, there was a large crowd gathered in a circle. The people all seemed to be cheering someone on. Kazuki recognized the person right away and was about to head over when Mei tore herself away from him and shouted in surprise while pointing at said person.
“Big br…I mean grandpa. Look its mama! Everyone is celebrating mama! Let’s see let see!”
Mei squirmed and wriggled through the crowd and ran ahead to Tsura who was uncharacteristically smiling bashfully.
(Hmm, what’s happened?)
