Kai looked at Kazuki as though he were stupid.
“Of course I’m real, what else would I be?”
Kazuki wasn’t quite sure himself. At first, he thought the young Kai in front of him was some sort of hallucination or something his own consciousness formed due to guilt. Kazuki hesitated for a moment.
“How can you be alive? I saw it with my own eyes. You…she killed you.”
Kai nodded in agreement.
“True, however, when did I ever say I was still alive?”
Kazuki was even more confused than ever. Before he could ask more questions Kai just shrugged his shoulders.
“I’m not alive, obviously I died over 10 years ago but this form in front of you isn’t an actual body. How in the 7 realms of hell would you store a body in your soul in the first place? No…I’m simply just a fragment. A small piece of my soul lived on and still remains. I’ve watched you for so long, wishing we could talk anything but for the longest time you couldn’t observe this place nor enter it. Only after Zetsu landed that soul attack did your mind find it’s way here.”
“What? What does this mean, how can…”
“Relax, I’ll explain. After recalling those events from our past so long ago and observing you both, I’ve come to realize a few things.”
Kazuki was quick to catch that both comment and interrupted Kai.
“Both. You’ve been watching me and everything I do but you said you’ve been observing both. Who is the other person?”
Kai tilted his head.
“Seriously, who do you think?”
Like a bolt of lightning a thought struck him.
“Fera!”
Kai nodded.
“Yes, our sister. She’s still a piece of shit from what I’ve seen.”
Kazuki started to rub his temples trying to process all this but Kai had, even more, to say and continued.
The clouds above in the sky started to play out a memory. It went back to when Kazuki and Kai were chained down on the golden inscription filled tables. This time however it was from Kai’s perspective.
He felt the tearing pain and saw with his own eyes as his Mage core was extracted from him and became a physical object. The very next moment something penetrated his chest and the light faded from his eyes.
“That was the day I died. We both know it. This though was not my true end.”
The clouds in the sky moved again and Kai looked around his surroundings. He was seemingly floating but he could feel nothing nor see properly, everything was fuzzy and he could neither tell if he were alive or dead. The next moment all sensation was returned and he awoke in a dark place. He was looking in a mirror but the reflection that he saw was not his own but instead, it was his sisters. He could see everything she could see and hear as well. Outside of that, he could do nothing else.
He was stuck in this dark place all alone, only allowed to watch and listen.
The next moment the scenery in the clouds above changed and he saw an old woman throwing a punch at his face. He instinctively went to defend his face.
*Crack*
He flinched but it wasn’t he who was hit. The punch was followed by a cry from Kazuki. Kai knew right away what had happened. He had gone traveled from his sister Fera to Kazuki. He was now witnessing everything from Kazuki’s end. The clouds in the sky began to speed up and move faster and faster. As this happened the memories in the sky sped along as well. Every now and again the perspective would switch to Fera’s one moment before switching right back a moment later.
Kai paused like it was a movie every once and while to show some of Kazuki’s more embarrassing moments. Every time he told a corny joke Kai would laugh and shake his head. Once it got to Lamia and Kazuki slipping into bed, Kazuki jumped up.
“OK ok I got it, you’ve seen everything. I just don’t how though.”
The memories in the sky faded away and Kai chuckled to himself.
“That Lamia is quite the bombshell. Do you think Nunully is gonna take after her mother, she’s already got the face, she just needs to fill in and then…”
Kai’s started raising his brows repeatedly.
“Do you know how weird that is? You’ve seen everything I’ve done. Damn, every time I shat or slept with someone, every time I’ve embarrassed myself.”
Kai shrugged his shoulder.
“There wasn’t much else to do. Between watching you travel around Earth and Fera rule her dark kingdom, seeing what you were up to was the natural choice. I didn’t see everything though. I could only observe you two one at a time. It’s just that I spent the majority of my time seeing what interesting thing you were doing in that other world.”
Kazuki didn’t know what to say but naturally, he had questions, which Kai could tell.
“Right you wanted to know how all this came about. Well, you were discussing what a Mage core was earlier right? You broke it down to the basics of basics and concluded that it was akin to an advanced battery that stores magical energy and your right. Once we start getting into the advanced part though, things become a lot more complicated. For instance, have you wondered if the Mage core stores magic, then what stores the Mage core?”
Kazuki had thought about this for a long time and blurted out his thoughts.
“The soul.”
Kai gave Kazuki a small golf clap.
“Oh, nice, so you already know. Then tell me, where is the soul stored or located rather.”
Kazuki replied matter of factly.
“The body of course.”
Kai shrugged his shoulders.
“Yes, no, maybe. Even I’m not quite sure about this one.”
“What does any of this have to do with how you are here or can be a continent away and observe Fera?”
“Hmm, well it’s hard to explain. I’m not exactly an expert. I can just tell you what my theory is really. When one activates magic it is said they are focusing and using their will to bring forth their power and materialize their element into the physical. I’ve thought about it for a long time, what exactly is to will something forth. It’s not just determination I’ll tell you that. Instead, I believe it is the manifestation of the soul itself. Every time you use magic, you are using a small amount of your soul to activate said magic. How can these two things work without being connected to one another? Therefore I believe they are connected, deeply connected.”
Kai thought he was starting to lose Kazuki and paused for a moment but hen Kazuki replied back.
“So if we go from there, are you saying that when you died a piece of your soul came out of your body and entered your Mage core. After that how did that connect you and me and you and Fera?”
Kai was slightly surprised but then he remembered how Kazuki always had his face buried in books as a child.
(Guess reading all those thick books wasn’t for nothing.)
“Close. I think when my Mage core was torn from me, that was when a piece of my soul went with it. My death afterward I don’t believe had anything to do with it. I believe it was either that or Mage cores already have part of our souls already fused to them or connected in some way. After my vision went black and I died, I no longer felt or could sense anything but I believe once I was integrated with a new living being, Fera, my soul reawakened. I could once again see and hear. Her life brought me back in a sense.”
Kazuki didn’t like that statement. It seemed almost thankful.
“You’re not getting sentimental, are you? I mean even if her life brought you back, I don’t know how grateful you could be, given the circumstances.”
Kai furrowed his brows before he punched Kazuki in the head. Kazuki could see he had pressed the wrong buttons and went silent.
“Because of her and that bitch, we both died that day so to speak. The thing I want most in the world is for their death. If I’m grateful it’s only to the fact that I can tell you all this shit and you can better prepare.”
Kai relaxed a bit after that little rant and cleared his throat.
*Ahem*
“Anyway. After observing her for a long time, I discovered why they wanted our Mage cores. They were trying to implant them into Fera and make them fuse together in order to make Fera a demigod.”
Kazuki’s eyes went wide. He had heard that term before. A demigod was a being that was no longer fully human and was a half-god. A being like that could destroy a continent quite easily if they so desired. A creature that could live nearly forever, basically invincible, with unmatched strength and could rule over all mortal creatures, that was a demigod. The only beings that supposedly could contend with them were Titans.
“This doesn’t make sense. How can our Mage cores turn her into a demigod and aren’t demigods just fairytales, like Titans?”
Kai shook his head.
“I said it was in order to make Fera a demigod but that doesn’t mean she’ll suddenly transform as soon as our Mage cores fuse with her. No, it’s what was in our Mage cores that the two wanted. From you, she got comprehension and from me, she got Martial prowess. You and I were both geniuses in those regards and when they took our Mage cores, the small piece of our soul that came out with them ended up with her. When she got our Mage cores her comprehension added with yours, multiplied several folds, same with her martial prowess.”
Kazuki was shaken from this and anger burned in his chest. Kai then added.
“You ever wonder why two abandoned children were suddenly;y scooped up out of that orphanage were adopted by the richest of the rich. We weren’t there to be a family. We were there to be harvested. They found two gems in the trash and decided to add us to their collection. We were never anything more than that to them.”
“But father he…”
“No, don’t bring him into this. Where was he when we were both betrayed. Where was he when I died. He…wherever that bastard is I hope he’s rotting.”
Kai was seething with hatred but Kazuki was unsure in his heart. His adopted father was only ever kind to him and Kai but one day he disappeared. Kazuki couldn’t blame Kai for the way he felt though and went silent. After a while, Kai calmed down and finished what he was saying.
“They got our Mage cores but something went wrong. Fera fused with them but the fusions weren’t perfect. I think because you lived your Mage core wouldn’t combine perfectly with hers. This, in turn, allowed me to go on. Since a piece of my soul remains and it’s connected to her, I can observe her and since you are alive and your Mage core didn’t fuse correctly with hers I can intermingle with the piece of your soul still stuck with your original Mage core. Since you yourself are still alive and your Mage core has a connection with your soul I can come here through Fera and observe you. This is all really weird but I think that covers the gist of it all.”
Kazuki didn’t know what to say. He entered this soul world to try and reforge his Mage core and he was bombarded left and right by his brother.
Kazuki sat down and stared blankly for a while.
(Is this the whole reason we were both betrayed? Is this why my brother was murdered? All for the sake of a fucking fairytale.)
Determination burned in Kazuki’s eyes.
(Don’t think I’ll let you all off the hook. Wait for me, all I need is time, just a bit of time and I will destroy them.)
