After checking the rest of the items, Nunully noticed that there were still many things leftover. She held up a staff that had several inscriptions on it and curiously asked.
“These are for?”
Kazuki picked up a large war hammer from the pile.
“This weapon is a bit much for me but I’m sure Sam would appreciate it.”
“These are for everyone else, really?”
“I have no need for all of this and even if we meet up its no guarantee that they’ll want to stay with us. I thought they might need a few things to defend themselves just in case.”
Nunully nodded.
“What a kind gesture.”
“Nah, its the least I can do. I shouldn’t have done things the way I had. I should have turned them down from the get-go when they offered to travel with us to the Rin mountain range. I didn’t tell them how dangerous it really was and therefore the choice they would have made was influenced by what they knew. I should have just snuck away with you right off the bat and cut ties cleanly. It would have been better off if they’d never had to deal with my bull shit.”
Nunully gently placed the staff down.
“That’s not true. If you had cut ties with them early on, who knows what would have happened. You might not have gotten as close as you had and even though there was plenty of bad, you might not have had all the good memories as well. Not only that, but you also might not have ever met Mei and Tsura. The things you’ve done, they can not be undone but at least you can try to make up for it. I think rescuing them may not put all of their resentment aside but it’s a huge start in my opinion.”
Mei nodded along.
“That’s right big bro. Not meeting my mom would be really sad but not ever meeting me is a tragedy, hehehe.”
After declaring that proudly, she pointed at her face and grinned widely.
“This face is too good to not meet, right big sis?”
Nunully laughed in her hand and agreed.
“That’s right Kazuki. Not meeting Mei would truly be tragic. Who would eat all of the delicious food if Mei was gone?”
Mei chimed in.
“Me me me.”
“I said if you were gone Mei Mei.”
Mei pointed at herself again.
“Even if you didn’t meet me, I would still come and fly to you and get all the yummy snacks.”
Everyone laughed after that. Mei was just too cute.
*Tok Tok Tok*
A sudden knock alerted them. Kazuki jumped to his feet with a sword at the ready and Nunully began filling her new staff with power. Tsura and Mei weren’t slow either and got ready for a fight.
(I set the sign on the door so we wouldn’t be disturbed by anyone working here so who’s at the door.)
Everyone was as quiet as mice and Kazuki slowly began to approach the door.
*Tok Tok Tok*
The knocking was neither too soft nor too aggressive. It was as though it were just a neighbor or maybe a friend but Kazuki and everyone else had no friends in this city. Kazuki came to about a foot in front of the door and he sent a few tendrils of ki through it. As soon as his ki went through the door he felt a familiar presence and his face scrunched up and he wondered.
(Why have you come?)
Just as he was contemplating on what to do, the person on the other side was about to knock again when his eyes flashed. His hand stopped before he knocked as he could sense Kazuki’s power and chuckled lightly.
“What’s the matter Kazuki, do you dare not open the door?”
Kazuki gripped the sword in his hand tighter but sensing no one else in the hall, he opened the door.
There he was standing barely 2 feet away. Degra smiled at Kazuki and looked at the regular sword in his hand.
“Oh, so you’re brave enough to open up huh?”
Kazuki kept his stance but he spoke with a calm collectedness that showed he wasn’t bothered in the slightest.
“Hah, you act like this door can stop either one of us. It’s as good as paper between us. Opening it or not doesn’t make a difference whatsoever.”
Degra nodded.
“True enough.”
An awkward silence followed after that and hung in the air for a bit before Mei broke the tension.
“What does the mean man want? If it’s a fight, big bro won’t lose and if you don’t use that weird power on me, then I won’t lose either.”
*Hahaha*
Degra laughed.
“The girl has guts. Those that have spoken so bluntly to me, have never had a good ending.”
Kazuki’s eyes narrowed.
“Is this why you’ve come, to threaten children. I thought your time was far more valuable than that but maybe you really just want to go another round. You lost once, a second time equals death.”
Degra could see an odd aura began to sep out of Kazuki.
(This is the same aura that somehow blocked my power. How does this man have not one but two different energies that I’ve never seen in my entire life? Truly this man is the biggest mystery I’ve had to deal with. The King wants him for some reason and a 4th stage has hunted him all the way to my city and wishes to deal with him and he has two energies I’ve never encountered before. Truly a mystery.)
Kazuki wondered why Degra had gone quiet for so long and pointed the tip of his blade at him.
“I don’t know why you’ve come but you’re being a pain in my ass. I can see that you don’t want to attack me, otherwise why just stand there without making a move. Still, if that’s all you’re going to do, could you kindly go the fuck away!”
Degra was lost in thought but Kazuki’s words snapped him back. When he first met Kazuki and he didn’t know his strength, Degra clearly looked down on him and would have never put up with such words. Now that he has already fought Kazuki once and lost, he knew Kazuki was stronger. This didn’t necessarily mean, Kazuki would win in a fight as Degra would not underestimate him ever again but Degra did see him more as an equal now. So the language from Kazuki, like water off a duck’s back, Degra let it go.
Degra gently touched the tip of Kazuki’s sword with a single finger and pushed it away from his face and smiled.
“Actually I do have some business to discuss and I’m sure you’re going to want to hear what I have to say.”
Kazuki’s sword went right back in Derga’s face only an inch away.
“Oh, so you say but I have no reason to listen to someone who uses a person as a human shield, as a mere hostage.”
Degra once more went to push the blade out of his face but this time Kazuki held it firm and a line of blood ran down Degra’s finger before he let go.
“Hmm, those that use hostages, that does seem to be a sore point with you.”
“What?”
“That person who launched a rock into my city. Doesn’t that person hold a friend of yours, am I wrong?”
Kazuki went quiet and he felt like an idiot. Before he even opened the door, Degra had said his name. His mind has been stressed and he hadn’t even noticed that his real name had been called out.
(He knows I’m Kazuki and he knows that Reya is looking for me. Of course, he does. After that loud ass monster called my name, everyone in the entire city knows that she’s looking for a Kazuki. The question is, how did he know my name. Wait, not only that, when I opened the door his expression didn’t change when he saw my face. Even though I’ve changed it to such a degree, he knows it’s me, how?)
“Is this the part now where I insult you for going quiet for so long or do you let me in and we discuss how to solve your problem or are you going to leave this city and meet this expert who by their actions, obviously wish you dead.”
Kazuki didn’t know what to say and was stumped.
“Well, if you really want me to leave and if you really want to go and commit suicide by seeing that expert, I guess I’ll be on my way.”
Degra was about to turn when Kazuki grabbed his arm. Degra was a little surprised at the speed in which Kazuki grabbed him. He thought it was an attack but when he sensed no ill intent he relaxed a little. Though his heart did skip a beat. He knew Kazuki was fast but that speed reminded him just how fast Kazuki was.
(At such a small distance, had he wanted to kill me…)
Degra shivered at the thought.
(Never get in his range, otherwise, it’s over for me.)
Everyone eyed Degra suspiciously and Nunully didn’t lower her staff for even a moment.
Degra was stunned. Last time he encountered Nunully, she had no magic tool and he thought she was only a 1st or 2nd stage Mage. Now that he could feel the power she had gathered in her staff, he gulped.
(So she’s a 4th stage Mage. This could work.)
Degra smiled a second later after he realized Nunully’s true power.
Degra stood in the middle and everyone had now surrounded him.
“If you wouldn’t mind, could you all lower your weapons, they’re making it difficult to explain the situation.”
No one did.
Kazuki asked again.
“Why have you come?”
Degra shrugged.
“I thought I might be able to help but maybe you have things under control.”
Kazuki didn’t respond right away which told Degra that even with A 4th stage such as Nunully on their side, they didn’t have all of their shit together.
“Hmph, an underground boss who runs an illegal casino, the epitome of greed, and yet you want me to believe you’d come and help us out of the kindness of your heart.”
Degra heard that and broke out into wild laughter.
*Bwahahahahahaha!*
He looked at Kazuki and the others as though they were idiots.
“No no no. I never once said I would be doing anything for free. I have indeed come to help but you have to do something for me first.”
“Stop wasting our time and speak. I’ve already not killed you and yet you’re still just talking nonsense. What the fuck is it that you want?”
Degra finally stopped laughing and he became serious.
“In order for me to help you, it’s quite simple. All that I require, is your help first.”
Everyone was confused by his words.
“Is everyone here dumb or deaf? How can I be any clearer? You help me and I help you.”
Kazuki finally lowered his sword, dumbfounded he asked.
“What?”
