Sitting behind a large desk, a young man was fiddling through multiple reports. Standing off to one side was an old knight awaiting orders. After a while, the young man finished reading everything and closed his eyes.
“Tell me, what do you think of Garn’s new project?”
The young man asked the old knight curiously. The knight thought for a moment.
“Your highness, Garn is well versed in the ways of magic. His skill at inscriptions of the ancient language and his knowledge puts him above nearly everyone but yourself of course. Knowing this, if the latest reports are accurate, then Garn has purified an energy source from a mana crystal to its utmost limit. All that energy condensed will be beyond dangerous. With my little understanding, I believe nothing will be able to stand up to whatever weapon he attaches that new creation to.”
King brian nodded before opening his eyes. Tapping the desk a few times he wondered out loud.
“Garn’s obsessions are starting to get out of hand. After Glacious broke his toy, Garn went home and locked himself away. He’s now made a better one. The question is, can my barriers hold against his new weapon. Here I thought my new magic cannons were something and he’s already surpassed them.”
*Tap tap tap tap*
“His behavior has become more and more erratic and it will only continue downhill. Once the Azirians are dealt with, if they can be dealt with in the first place, Garn will most likely turn on everyone that’s not under his boot already. In the end, though, the biggest threat is the incoming Miasma. No, I can’t deal with things one at a time, I have to think.”
*Tap tap tap*
The knight said nothing as King brian tapped away at his desk. The old knight knew to never disturb Brian when he was in the middle of a thought and waited to be called upon and only if he was called upon.
“Garn has been amassing Magic beast cores as well as Mana crystals correct?”
The old knight nodded.
“Yes, your highness. By our current estimates, he has gathered several million at this point, and there are now signs of slowing. Not because Treia doesn’t wish for more rather the fresh magic beast cores are running low. After the Mirian swamp incident, millions of magic beasts fled outward. By this time, we as well as the other countries combined have killed at least 85% of all magic beast from there. The other 15% have been scattered and now most flee and hide whenever they even catch a whiff of a human. Because of this, gathering more magic beast cores has become increasingly difficult. Yet King Garn still wishes for more. Some weaker countries have been opening up their vaults and selling off most of their reserve stock of beast cores in attempts to get their hands on large sums of money as well as to gain favor with King Garn.”
*Tap tap tap*
“The fools. all of those cores can be used to make weapons and tools and their just selling them like that. What will they do when they have no more. Everything in their countries will become affected with little inventory. Their economies will start to collapse and they don’t even see it. They’ll try and pump money in from the sales of those very cores but that won’t be enough once things get bad. They’re taking bites out of their own asses and they don’t even realize. Fine with me though. They weaken themselves for me. Garn is already far too strong for his own good and he’s unstable. I need more power or rather a powerful ally.”
*Tap tap tap*
King Brian grabbed a piece of parchment and pen and began to write something down.
“I want you to start buying every magic beast core you can get your hands on.”
“Your highness? What about King Garn?”
King Brian shook his head.
“Outbid him every step of the way. He’ll pay double, then we’ll pay triple. Also start offering to sell some of our Magic cannons. Not too many, just enough for each country to realize its true advantage.”
“But your Majesty, each of your Magic cannons require a large power source. When the other countries realize that, won’t they become angry with us?”
“True, at first but soon they’ll know that we gave them a reasonable deal to purchase their mana crystals and Beast cores at a more than generous price while Garn was trying to purchase them at below market value. Of course, that will be a lie but we can change the narrative in that way. Garn in return will have no other source to buy cores and mana crystals except from us. This in turn will make him a direct competitor with the other nations. They will get into bidding wars for our resources. This in turn will build resentment with Garn. The other countries in turn will start to see things differently. They will have some of my Magic cannons and they will start to believe they are not as weak as they once believed. Garn and the other nations may even come to a head because of this.”
King Brian said all of this while still writing something down. King Brian put the letter in an envelope and then stamped his seal on it and with a flick of his finger it flew over to the old knight who already had his hands out to receive it.
“Take this letter to my emissary and have him deliver 10 Magic cannons to King Tobern of Jin. These will be a gift to him. He may still hate me but after he receives these cannons and finds out how truly powerful they are his confidence will grow. He may hate me but he definitely hates Garn more. If Garn even hints at pressuring Tobern, I believe Tobern like always will blow his top. I’m sure he’ll believe that with the cannons as well as his right-hand man Bozek, he won’t have to back down. This could be very good for me.”
“Your Majesty what if King Tobern of Jin turns those cannons on us?”
“No matter, even if he does, we still have our new barriers. They will hold against them. After that, it will be an act of war and we can invade Jin freely. Either way, I win and everyone else loses. This will work.”
The old knight bowed respectfully before turning around and leaving to fulfill his king’s orders.

*Thud*
Asuna’s body was slammed hard into the ground and she spit out a bit of blood. A large golem stood above her and was preparing to crush her with a foot.
Glacious barked at her.
“Still too slow! We’ve been doing this for months and you still aren’t anticipating!”
The golem stomped down and Asuna quickly rolled out of the way. At the same time, her eyes glowed purple and she reached out and grabbed at the air.
“Lock!”
The golem’s feet stopped but not the rest of it. Its waist turned 180 degrees around to face her and it detached its arm before launching it her at high speed.
A large barrel sized fist filled Asuna’s vision as it came flying at her but she didn’t panic. Her eyes continued to glow with a purple light and she commanded.
“Blink!*
The whole arm flying at her suddenly disappeared out of sight and reappeared behind the golem. It’s speed still maintained, it crashed into the golems head with a terrible force.
*Bam!*
The Golem’s entire head was crushed into rubble revealing a Magic core. Before the Golem could regenerate, Asuna took this opportunity.
“Blink!”
She teleported almost instantly and was now on top of the golem’s shoulders She pulled two steel daggers from behind her back and stabbed down at the core. Just before she pierced them, she stopped an inch away.
Asuna smiled.
“Who did you say was slow?”
Glacious nodded.
“Good work.”
Asuna jumped off the golem’s shoulders with a flip and landed perfectly on her feet.
Glacious tossed her a clean rag and Asuna wiped the blood from her lips and chin.
“Thank you, senior.”
Glacious nodded and the two turned and looked at the others.
A golem brought down its fist and Sam raised both of his arms to meet it. On top of both of his arms, gauntlets made of hardened dark crystal helped protect him.
*Bang!*
Sam sunk nearly a foot into the ground from this but he managed to block the blow. Several large cracks appeared over the surface of the gauntlets but they remained intact and Sam was completely unharmed. Sam smiled before batting the barrel-sized hands away and then grabbing the golem around its waist.
*Heurrr*
With a loud grunt, Sam exerted all of his strength and lifted the several ton creature into the air, and then with a suplex, he crushed it into the ground. Sam didn’t stop there. Two crystal gauntlets protecting his hands transformed into two large spikes that he wielded without mercy and pierced deeply into the chest of the golem. Twisting the spikes inside the golem’s chest, Sam drilled away until he found the magic core within and he stopped.
“I won this game.”
Sam stood up and walked away with sweat beading down his face. Asuna came over and the two high-fived one another.
“Nice match Sam.”
Sam nodded and the two along with Glacious watched the others.
Shin raced around his opponent using his speed to his advantage. A few times the golem would try and trip him up by placing a few well-timed pebbled or other rocks in his way but Shin avoided them almost perfectly. Shin flicked his fingers twice, imitating Glacious’s air pocket attack but instead of sending out a simple force of wind, Shin turned these into mini wind blades. The two tiny wind blades flew threw the air and hit the golem directly in the eyes, shattering the gems within. As soon as the golem was blinded, Shin raced forward and kicked out several viper whips at once. Every single blade of wind landed in the same spot, one over top of the other increasing the damage until a magic core was exposed in the center of the golem. Shin kicked off the ground and appeared in front of the exposed core in almost an instant. A blade of wind on his hand.
“Hehehe, guess this means I win again, you stupid lump of rocks.”
Shin ran over and began to brag in front of Asuna and Sam. Sam gave a thumbs up and Asuna just rolled her eyes but she didn’t complain. She knew how difficult it actually was to beat these golems so she didn’t hate on Shin as it really was something to brag about.
*Bang bang bang bang*
A golem towered over Kimi and rained down blow after blow. Kimi though wasn’t afraid. With her staff extended, she had already erected a barrier made of light and was maintaining it fine even while the golem continued to throw punches. Finally, the golem lifted a leg and kicked Kimi’s barrier and Kimi was sent flying until her and her barrier crashed into a nearby tree.
Kimi’s body was slammed inside of her own barrier and she couldn’t help but release a cry of pain.
*Uhhg*
But she didn’t quit. Gritting her teeth she stood up. The golem traveled through the ground and appeared in front of her almost instantly. Once more it began to rain down punches on top of her barrier. Kimi concentrated with everything she had and willed her power forth. Extending her staff forward she yelled.
“BACK THE FUCK OFF ALREADY!”
At the tip of her staff, a highly concentrated laser shot out and cut across the golem’s neck, decapitating it. Its head fell onto the ground and a magic core was revealed. Kimi was a step too slow though and the golem started to regenerate.
“Not on my watch!”
Kimi’s barrier disappeared from around her and surrounded the magic core. The rocks rolling up the neck couldn’t reform the head with her barrier blocking it. The crystal at the end of her staff glowed once more and a laser shot forward. It went through her own barrier and struck the core directly. The golem then collapsed to the ground and became a pile of rubble.
“Hmph.”
Glacious became aggravated.
“Little mouse are you trying to damage my things?”
As soon as she heard Glacious’s tone, Kimi’s brave face slipped and she froze. However, only a second later, the golem began to regenerate once more and reformed undamaged.
Glacious eyed it and made sure it was fine before nodding.
“Ok, it’s fine. Forget my words. You did a good job.”
Sam came over and hugged her and the two shared a small peck. before everyone’s attention turned to the last person.
Kazuki was surrounded on all sides by 4 golems. All at once, they attacked.
