Kazuki as well was baffled by what he had just done. He was trying to fuse dark and fire and make a black flame-like Glacious but instead, he created something entirely different. Albeit a failure, still, even a failure could teach you something. To that effect, the gears in Kazuki’s mind were rapidly turning as he gained more and more insight into the ways of magic.
(So it can be molded in such a way, amazing.)
Glacious went over what he just saw and a moment later he extended both hands. Creating a flame in one and darkness in the other he slowly combined them. This time instead of fusing together and creating his signature black flame, a small red orb formed. Sprinkled on its surface were tiny dots of black. Everyone saw this and couldn’t help but take a step back. Glacious had literally seen it for the first time just now, yet only a moment later he recreated Kazuki’s magic just like that.
Glacious observed the small red orb for a moment before cracks appeared all over it and it shattered.
“Hmm, so it can be combined like this. Kazuki, did you make it like that on purpose?”
Kazuki shook his head.
“No senior. I was trying to change the flow as you said. I did it the way you proposed and nudged and manipulated the two energies gingerly before combining them. The results, I had no idea it would turn out like this. More than that, senior, have you seen this magic before?”
“No, this was my first time seeing such a red orb. It grew hot in my hand and then cool to the tough. It was very strange yet it felt familiar.”
Hearing this, they could barely believe Glacious. This really was his first time seeing it and he managed to recreate it so easily. Glacious had claimed to be a master of all the elements but hearing something and seeing it was like night and day. They couldn’t help but stare at Glacious in both awe and admiration.
*COugh cough Hack cough*
Just as they were lost in their own thoughts, Glacious had a coughing fit and quickly covered his mouth. Kazuki grabbed a pitcher form his storage ring and filled it with fresh water and handed it over to Glacious. Glacious held the pitcher up and drained it in only a second or so.
“Thank you young Kazuki. I’m ok now.”
Asuna and the others took note of Kazuki’s use of water magic.
“Kazuki, since when can you use water magic? I thought you could use fire, earth, and darkness.”
Kazuki realized his mistake and tried to think of something.
(Everyone was finally starting to get along and tensions have eased quite a bit. If they learn that I accidentally took Danny’s soul after he died, this would cause problems. At the same time, I shouldn’t lie to them. I have to tell them.)
Kazuki wanted to tell them but he remembered Danny specifically asking him not to. Danny himself said it would just cause more bad than good and it was best to never mention it.
Kazuki went quiet and Glacious interfered.
“That is a little trick I taught Kazuki. He’s not actually using water magic rather this cup is a magic tool that I gave him. It automatically fills with water according to the user’s wish. He had complained about his thirst when we first started our training, so I gifted him with this magic cup so he would stop whining about his parched throat.”
Shin rubbed his hands together greedily.
“Hehehe, such a generous gift. So where’s ours?”
Glacious raised a brow.
“Yours?”
Shin buddied up closely next to Glacious.
“Of course senior master generous teacher dragon. It’s unfair to gift one of your students a present and leave the rest of us hanging out here. I get thirsty to ya know.”
Glacious snorted in response.
“Hmpf, since when am I your generous teacher? Isn’t it more like you are a moocher guest and I am the gracious host. We’ve never established a teacher-student relationship.”
“Sure we have senior dragon. The moment you opted to take us under your mighty wing and train us. At that very moment, you became all of our teachers. Right guys?”
Shin smirked and encouraged Asuna and the others. They quickly got on board.
Kimi smiled and agreed.
“Right right, Senior is definitely our teacher. You teach us every single day.”
Sam was right behind her and bowed slightly.
“Teacher.”
Asuna as well was no exception.
“Teacher, please be fair in treating us. We should all get a treasure or none of us, right?”
It wasn’t hard to rope them all in. If Kazuki merely had to complain about being thirsty to get a treasure, how easy was it to get gifts from Glacious. Plus, it’s not like Shin was lying. They had been training under Glacious for months. They considered him their teacher long ago. At first, they had simply moved rocks but then they had combat training with Glacious’s golems and even bugged him every few minutes with questions in regards to magic. Glacious had patiently taught them all for a while now. If they didn’t consider him to be a teacher now, then who the hell could they consider.”
Glacious was stupified and looked at Kazuki but Kazuki could only shrug his shoulders in this situation. In the end, he relented.
*Haaa*
“Fine, you all win. Later on, I’ll bring something to you but I better not hear an ounce of complaining. Otherwise, I’ll take it right back and you won’t be getting another. Got it!”
All at once, everyone cupped their fist and bowed.
“Yes teacher!”
Glacious nodded.
“Right. Time to head back, training’s done for the day.”
They all celebrated and headed back home. At first, Asuna walked ahead but soon Shin sped up a bit and walked directly in front of her. When this happened Asuna grew annoyed and sped up a bit until she was in the front. Shin saw this as a competition and began to quicken his pace. Asuna saw this as an ass move and sped up as well until the two were racing one another to the house.
Kimi and Sam ignored the fools and simply walked at their own pace hand in hand. Every once and a while Sam would whisper something to Kimi and she would blush slightly and the two would stare longingly into one another’s eyes.
As Glacious collected his cauldron, Kazuki stayed behind and thanked him.
“Senior, thanks for not mentioning Danny. I want to tell the others myself self but Danny’s wish was for them to not be burdened with this information. If they think about his soul being trapped inside of me, things may once again fall apart between us, and I don’t…”
Kazuki didn’t finish his sentence and left his thought lingering in the air.
“Hmm, you see them as friends. It only makes sense that you don’t wish to burden them with such things.”
“So senior understands.”
“I do but at the same time, they have a right to know and they have a right to share such a burden with you. That’s what friends are for. You share in the same pain as well as relish together in joy. If you cant speak truths to those around you whom you claim to care about then you’re simply lying about what they mean to you. Does this information really protect them? Do you think your friends to be so weak? Have you not journeyed together and been through terror and agony alongside them. The things you’ve been through, how can people understand if you simply bottle it all up and never speak of it. The hurt you cause when you bite your tongue may be far more impactful than if you were to speak up.”
Kazuki didn’t know what to say. These words of wisdom, Kazuki truly felt them.
“Senior, how do you know so much?”
Glacious went quiet for a while before responding with melancholy.
“You’ve gathered so many of my memories, witnessed the many tragedies that befell me and you ask such things. Young Kazuki, when you live for thousands of years, it’s only natural to pick up things. Knowledge, heartache, stubbornness, hatred, love, pain. I know it all too well and I also know how it feels to not speak when you know in your heart it’s what’s right. Sometimes you have to hurt others with truth and that’s just the way life goes. You know what’s far worse than the truth though?”
Kazuki didn’t know.
“It’s lies. Lies to me are far worse than the truth. Honesty hides behind nothing, it’s right there in all of our faces, and try as you might to avoid it, eventually, it’s right there in your face and is undeniable. Lies on the other hand hide in plain sight and pass themselves off as truth. They misguide us and confuse us to no end and cause far too much damage. Some say they are necessary. Some say that the world needs them and that’s how everything runs.”
Glacious shook his head.
“I say those people are absolutely wrong. Those people are confined and locked into their web of lies. They are caged and bound to them and because of that, those lies have power over them and those that trust them. Because I used to lie, I lied to myself. I lied and denied who I truly was, because of those lies, the man I loved was destroyed and died. Because I didn’t speak when I should have, my father and the elders took what I loved and held dear and broke it all into unrepairable pieces. Young Kazuki, I’m not saying that you should tell the truth nor am I preaching to you. I’m merely stating what happened to me. Tell them the truth or don’t, it’s not my place but have you thought deeply on this and what another lie could do to your friendship with them. How many lies until they say enough is enough.”
Glacious tossed his cauldron to a nearby golem before walking off. After a few steps, he turned and said.
“Maybe you should have another conversation with Danny.”
