Return of the Fallen Volume 7 Chapter 30

Kazuki had tried and failed again and again. His experiments with this new attack only proved to him more and more that he simply was not fast enough to get out of the radius of the attack in time. Because he had to be in close proximity to activate it, this attack would just as likely kill him as it would his opponent.

He had come up with a brilliant attack that in theory could both damage the Miasma to a certain extent while at the same time destroying a good deal of energy in the surroundings and in doing so taking away part of the Miasma’s source of power. With less energy, in theory, the Miasma should not be able to move about as swiftly nor replenish itself. In the end though, what good was an attack if it was such a double edge sword.

Not only that, all of this was still just a theory. Kazuki had very little information on the Miasma itself and didn’t know its true limits.

Kazuki found the thought of him heading to battle with an unfinished and unknown attack to be both hilarious and dumb. Suppose he shows up and the attack completely fails or worse off feeds the Miasma and allows it to grow even stronger. There were still too many unknowns.

*Haa*

With a deep sigh, Kazuki walked deeper into the mountains. He found a wide forest and found the sound of nature took some of the unrelenting nagging thoughts churning in his head and numbed them to a certain extent. He would have stayed where he first launched his attack but the explosion had leveled far too many trees to count and left a hollow dreary feeling. Most of the animals had fled deeper into the forest and mountain after his little experiments and hid themselves out of sight, not daring to make even the slightest noise in fear of more to come.

(My attack is far too risky. It threatens my life just as much as anyone else.)

Kazuki stopped for a moment and raised his hands. A ball of flame in one and a sphere of black swirling energy in the other.

(If I could master Senior lizard’s fused magic, I might just be able to come up with a way of controlling this new attack. The problem is when the energies come together they exploded almost immediately. If I could slow the process for even a moment, it would give me enough time to flee before the explosion happens.)

Kazuki’s hands slowly came together. He had witnessed Glacious create this technique of fusing magic together from Glacious’s memories. As the two came close enough, the energies tried to destroy the other. Kazuki learned the way to fuse them was to first make them rotate in the same direction. That was extremely difficult. Glacious could do this easily but for Kazuki, it was something near impossible. The energies themselves had a natural rotation to them and dark energy along with fire just so happen to rotate in the complete opposite directions.

Kazuki found that whenever he changed the direction of the two energies, they would for some reason be snuffed out. The only thing he could come up with was to change the direction by a small amount, a small degree. This though caused the power to start to fade.

To compensate for this loss, Kazuki would add more energy. Adding more energy, in turn, makes his control over the magic itself more difficult.

Kazuki’s hands came closer together and the dark energy started to erode his flames. In turn, Kazuki added power to his fire and his fire started to burn his dark energy. The result was a failure. His control over magic was nowhere near Glacious’s level.

(Only someone who has a complete understanding of the element of fire and the element of darkness could do this.)

Kazuki continued making his way through the forest until he found his way to a small clearing where a lake stretched out in front of him. Kazuki was completely lost in his own world and didn’t even notice the lake in front of him and kept walking. The moment his foot touched the water, he stood atop it and without notice, continued walking forward atop the surface of the water.

He was unconsciously using water magic and hadn’t even noticed until he caught a bright glare. The sun was reflecting off of the pristine surface of the water and shining directly into Kazuki’s eyes. This snapped him out of his thoughts and he realized where he stood. The moment he took notice of this, he almost sank below the surface of the water.

He readjusted his balance with his water magic and caught himself from falling into the water.

(I was this distracted that I walked almost to the center of this lake.)

Kazuki chuckled inwardly.

It was a strange thing to be this distracted but he couldn’t help it. There had been far too many things on his mind. Still, it was a little funny that he hadn’t noticed until now. He wondered if he’d walk into the mouth of a volcano if he was this deep in thought. A bit of a chill ran down his spine just thinking about it.

*Splash*

A few feet in front of Kazuki, the surface of the water was disturbed as Kazuki found two small fish chasing each other tails.

Around and around in a circle with mouths agape. Each one tried to swallow the other. Even though they were similar in size and to try and eat one would only cause choking and death, they still chased and chased. Kazuki watched this, almost in a trance. At first, curious about who would grow tire out before the other and who would win in the end but the more he watched he could only see them both giving up and leaving. Their chase was pointless.

Just as he was lost in this trance, a new opponent entered the stage. A much larger fish appeared from beneath the two circling fish and with a large wide-open mouth, it swallowed the two smaller fish in one big gulp.

It then swam back into the depth of the lake, disappearing down below.

Kazuki watched this all unfold and something hit his mind like a hammer.

(That…could it be!?)

The gears in Kazuki’s mind began to race as a new idea struck him.

“I myself can’t control the attack but that doesn’t mean it cannot be controlled.”

Kazuki flew over to the shore and raised a palm. His ring glowed and a large flat slab of rock rose from the ground. Kazuki pressed his finger against the rock and dug into it before he began to write with his finger.

(Like Senior lizard’s fused magic, in order to create a black flame-like him, I would need absolute understanding and control over the element of fire and darkness but even with his memories I lack experience and can’t actually do it but that doesn’t mean I have to give up there.)

Kazuki began to scribble out the ancient language on this large slab of stone. At first, he wrote dozens of inscriptions and then hundreds. After a few minutes, he looked it over before shaking his head. With a flick, he shattered the stone slab and created a fresh new one.

(My attack is something I can’t outrun at my current speed, that much is true. Later on, when I enter the 6th stage and beyond, my speed will eclipse what I’m currently capable of now and I won’t have this problem but for now, I need a way to control the process down to every detail.)

Thousands of inscriptions were written in seconds as Kazuki’s finger blurred across the slab of stone.

(In order to control it, one way would of course be to understand the energies completely and master them. That along with experience. To understand the elements to such a degree requires one to know hundreds of thousands, no millions of different inscriptions along with every possible combination they can form. Glacious is capable of this but I am not. So instead of processing that many inscriptions along with the combinations, I can offset it to something. A Magic tool.)

Kazuki quickly ran out of room on one slab and created another. After he was done writing on that one he made another, and then another and another so on and so on.

(I can make a tool that can hold all three energies. I can make it contain all three of them, Maybe It can act like a battery or some sort of timed storage. I can add all three energies and leave it on a quick timer. After I activate it, this tool would hold all of that energy at bay for a few seconds before releasing all three into a single chamber and with it…KA-BOOM!)

The idea was both simple and complex. The type of item that could contain these different types of energies, the material of course would need to be orichalcum. Orichalcum was capable of absorbing any kind of energy. Kazuki didn’t know of any other material that was as durable and could also hold ki besides a living thing. Not only could it absorb any energy, but it also made energy itself more efficient and amplified its effects.

First Kazuki would change the absorbing effect of the god metal to one that stored the energy. At the same time, he wouldn’t take away any of the amplification effects. After the energies were stored inside, Kazuki could make it so the device didn’t go off until he decided. The one thing he understood clearly though was that whatever god metal he used, after the explosion, there would be none of it that could be recovered. It was one thing to have a wall of it in front of you with some distance away from the explosion but having an explosion from within the god metal, there would not be a single piece left.

Kazuki’s finger finally finished writing and drawing and when he finished the design, he couldn’t help but laugh at himself.

The design he drew, the weapon that in theory would be capable of damaging humanity’s enemy, in the end, what he designed looked akin to a modern-day grenade albeit much much larger.

With such a weapon he would not need to flee. Instead, he could chuck it miles away if he wished before activating it. Afterward, the god metal would be nonrecoverable. This meant there would be a limit to how many he could make.

(With this, I can give Glacious that opportunity. We might just be able to break the deadlock.)
