Return of the Fallen Volume 8 Chapter 82
“Danny this is incredible but doesn’t all of this rely on the cage itself. Eventually, it will run out of energy, right? After that she can send her soul fragment and mind back without incident or with no cage, can’t she just continue fighting us?”
Danny pointed at the cage of lightning with his saber.
“The cage will last for as long as I will it. As I said, I have been observing Fera not just now but during our first encounter at the trench. I’ve watched her use magic many times and something always confused me. Just how is she using magic in the first place? The body she made is one of rock or cloud or something else along those lines. All of them are made of random material in the area but they all are missing something very important.”
Kazuki’s mind snapped forward.
(Something important. He mentioned magic but?)
As soon as he thought up to here, like a puzzle, things fell into place and he blurted out.
“No core.”
Danny nodded.
“Correct. She had no Beats core of course since she is not a beast but what she should have, a Mage core, that to is missing. So how then is she able to produce and control any magic. The answer is, she can’t produce any magical energy on her own. No, without a core, there is no magic flowing through her fake bodies, instead, she uses her aura in a similar way that you do Kazuki when you mimic the wind element. The real difference is she isn’t mimicking the elements but rather mimicking, the way one produces the magic in the first place. Anyone with a developed Mage core has elements that they are naturally attuned with. Their core holds these elements.”
Etora had no mind for magic and was completely lost.
“What does any of this mean exactly?”
Danny quickly broke it down.
“As you know, when one absorbs energy from the world, they would take in their own natural element. Even though there are traces of every element around, your body would only bring in the element your core naturally has. Once in your body, this energy becomes a part of you. When you use it, this magic leaves your body by your own will and is changed from simple energy into an attack or defense, etc. This doesn’t apply to Fera or rather the fake bodies she uses. Instead, she manipulates the magic in our surroundings with her aura. She then uses her aura to attack and so on.”
Danny could see that Etora was still lost and so he reduced what he was saying to something even a child could understand.
“She uses magic around her aura. This means the magic she is using is something that anyone can tap into. It is up for grabs by any and all. The moment she began to turn the magic in her surroundings into lightning, it was her loss. Since I myself can manipulate lightning, all I needed to do is take control over the lightning she initially manipulated.”
Danny raised his sword and pointed it at Fera.
“In order for someone to control so much lightning with their aura alone, one has to have perfect control and focus with their aura. Having all of you attack her at once, as well as me angering her to such an extent and making her focus solely on me, her mind was loosened and her aura wavered a fraction. The moment I swung my saber, I did not use my attack to sever all of her energy and send her back to the dark continent. Instead, I used my Storm Tempest strike to weaken her aura around a few bolts of lightning. At the same time, I infused my own aura along with my sword form into those few bolts of lightning.”
While Danny was speaking, Fera heard it all and she raged even more inside of the cage. She tried to form a body of metal but again the lightning cage struck and destroyed anything she tried to make before it ever manifested fully.
“Kazuki, your sister is an angry person and is prone to fits of rage. She is childlike and beyond prideful. Her losing that small amount of focus was just enough for me to take over a few bolts of lightning. Once I had control of a few and they were infused with my sword form, I made them split up and crash into the other bits of lightning. Each time they crashed into one another, my sword form would be carried with the lightning and it would sever her controlling aura. My aura and sword form would then spread to the now uncontrolled lightning and I would take control over it. You all know how fast lightning moves. From the moment of my sword swing to the entrapping cage, a mere few seconds passed. As for when this cage will fade away, the answer is never.”
Sasai couldn’t help but shout at this time.
“Impossible! Your powers are not infinite so how can you boast and lie about such a thing!?”
“Sasai, you doubt me too much but your words aren’t totally wrong. When I say this cage will never dissolve or disappear it of course comes with a caveat. This cage just like Fera’s fake bodies inside of it, draws energy from the surroundings instead of from me directly. Its power comes from the sky, the ground, and everything else that contains a semblance of magical energy. This though requires guidance. Using my aura, I manipulate the energy and direct it into my lightning cage. Technically speaking, this cage can last forever but it needs my aura to guide outside energy to it. As long as my soul exists and nothing else interferes, my aura will remain in effect and keep this cage whole. So if a soul is, in fact, eternal, then so long as nothing interferes so too is this cage.”
Everyone was left in absolute shock. Even Fera’s expression changed. She had been called childlike and prone to anger and this did in fact leave her angry but Danny’s explanation about the cage left her stunned.
No one knew what to say and even Sasai was feeling a bit embarrassed. He had shouted and even called Danny a liar but he had no way of refuting anything Danny just said.
Shaila the ever-curious had a question.
“You said this cage can last basically forever as long as you use your aura but aura’s have limits, they all can only reach so far. If you were to move out of range, what would become of this cage?”
“Of course it would fail. Once out of my range, I can not guide the energy using my aura if this cage is too far away. As it is though, I have made it so the cage will not move.”
Danny looked at Etora.
“With her here, I think it’s about time you stepped away don’t you think?”
Etora was conflicted. He knew he needed to help Glacious but Danny himself said Fera could still escape, it would just cause her some damage.
“If I leave and she escapes, once she returns, she will go straight after you all, right?”
Danny shrugged his metal shoulders.
“Maybe, maybe not, either way, if she returns she will be weakened from the damage to her soul, and not only that it should take a bit before she’s able to return. By that time, you and Glacious should have finished up by then, hopefully.”
Etora glanced at everyone before glaring a final time at Fera.
“Once things are handled, I and Glacious will come for you.”
Fera practically snarled at Etora.
“Come if you wish but it will not be me who falls!”
Etora spit on the ground in disgust before turning away. Just before he left he said.
“I’ll be back, keep her as long as you can.”
The very next moment his body blurred and he basically turned into a streak of light as he vanished into the horizon.
Fera wore an expression of scorn.
“You piece of scrap metal. To think you were more devious and clever than my little brother. The moment I am free from this prison, do not think for a moment you will be safe. This trap will not work on me, not twice.”
Fera tried to create another storm within the cage once again but again it was destroyed by the lightning.
Sasai was pissed. Every word from this woman’s mouth was a threat.
“You talk far too much for a prisoner. You think anyone is frightened. Danny trapped you once, you think he can’t do it again. I can’t wait for the day we can all see your head tumble off from those shoulders.”
Fera went quiet for a moment before she got real close to the edge of the lightning cage. Arcs of electricity cracked at her and started to tear her three bodies apart. She began to chuckle as she spoke coldly.
“Hahaha, I’ll be sure to kill you first and turn you into a fine belt.”
She spoke up to here before she purposefully ran straight into the cage. The moment she did this, her three bodies were ripped to shreds by the lightning and a plume of smoke came flying out of the cage before it too was dissipated.
Sasai became a little nervous but laughed it off.
“Heh, what a vile woman. Danny, you’ll trap her again when the time comes right?”
Danny was silent for a brief second before he shook his head.
“No, what I did, she will not fall for it twice and even if I tried, she would not be so foolish as to supply me with the means to trap her in the first place.”
Sasai had an expression that said what. Kazuki as well didn’t understand what he meant by that.
“Danny, when you say she won’t supply you with lightning you mean?”
Danny waved his saber with a flip before placing it back at his side and sheathing it.
“The amount of lightning required to make that cage is not something I can produce. It needs more magic hen what I currently have stored in my core. I can’t make tens of thousands of bolts as Fera can. Controlling them with my aura is one thing, creating them all is a different story entirely. The only way to make such a cage, someone would have to either manipulate the magic in our surroundings as Fera did or someone would have to naturally produce it from their own source, their own core. That is something I am not currently capable of. So as I said, this cage will not be able to work on Fera again, unless she’s actually a fool but we both know that is not the case.”
Sasai remembered the smug expression he had just a moment ago when facing Fera and now he was regretting it.
“Dammit Danny! Why didn’t you tell me something so important in the first place!?”
Danny merely shrugged.
“You interrupted before I could finish explaining it all. Blame yourself.”
Shaila began to laugh while Tozu patted him on his back.
“Good luck little brother.”
Sasai’s heart sank and more laughs began to spread among them
