Return of the Fallen Volume 9 Chapter 76
Millions of souls once a part of Zephris, all at once entered Fera’s body and became one with her soul tree. As these souls began to fuse with her, a great cry echoed out into the world as these souls were absorbed into her.
The echo of these cries could not be heard by normal people but anyone and any beasts connected to magic felt something resound within as they felt the agony and pure fear these souls felt as they became nothing more than a part of Fera’s power. Beasts across the continent ran wild as if madness had infected them. Mages across the Feya continent fell to their knees and gripped their chest in pure panic. This great cry from the boundless souls shook them all to their very core.
Asuna, Nunully, Sam, and everyone else that could use magic fell to their knees. Only Danny managed to stay standing as he was protected by his own aura. Shin was shaken but still managed to eke out a scream.
“What the hell is this!?”
None of them knew but they could all feel the direction from whence this cry of agony came from and they knew something was happening.
Danny covered Asuna and the others with his aura and they were able to take to their feet once more. Danny shook his head.
“I don’t know but the cause must be Fera. Her plan must be coming to fruition, we must hurry! Asuna, it’s time to start our own plan.”
Asuna nodded before guiding Triska and Shin in creating new magic circles for multiple teleportation gates. Before this would have been very difficult but after personally witnessing the magic circles Shin and Triska carved out with the metal plates King Brian had given them, she had fully committed their shape and pattern to memory. Not only that, her comprehension of the element of space had climbed greatly as she teleported thousands of people earlier. Now she was even adjusting Shin and Triska carving patterns first hand as she understood ways to make the inscriptions more efficient, better.
At the same time, Danny’s voice boomed over the remaining survivors of this war. In total there were a little more than 7,000 brave people who made it out of the mountain base. The moment Danny’s voice echoed around them, men and women, they all came to attention.
“Hear me! As I’ve discussed a few moments ago, in order for this plan to work, I will need the fastest among you. Runners, Mages, enhanced soldiers, anyone with an enhancing inscription tattoo. Right now, I need you…No…The world needs you! I don’t know if this will work and the chances are not great but it’s all we have. You people are all we have. Only you can do this. If we pull this off, f everything works, you all will be regarded as heroes until the day you die of old age surrounded by family and friends. It’s time to step up! VOLUNTEERS! COME FORTH!”
The speech couldn’t be considered much at all but somehow it made their blood flow with vigor. Cheers spread through the crowd and hundreds of people came forward. Danny quickly separated these people. Using his aura, he could determine their ability in terms of speed. Those too slow were graciously turned away. This though didn’t last long as Danny found he would not have enough people if he sent this many away. Soon he had around 300 people.
He was about to announce something else when the surge of vanishing souls ceased all at once as if someone had simply flipped a switch.
Danny and the others who could sense this turned towards the south as if trying to see the cause.
All at once, a cold feeling struck not just those that could sense magic but even the normal people there. Magical energy within several thousand miles came rushing toward the south. There was so much of it that it actually created a vortex and pulled the wind with it. Up above in the sky, tiny sparks of silver, black, and even green could be seen as clear as day. It was like billions of fireflies of these different colors lit up the sky. In actuality it was the magical elements becoming so dense that they could be seen by the naked eye.
Several regular people pointed out the different colors flying in the sky which in turn shocked the Mages around them. Normal people should not be able to see the color of an element but that’s just how dense this power was. The cold feeling in these people grew as the power swiftly jutted across the sky like lightning, all of it heading in one direction, to one location.
(Damn, are we too late? It can’t be. I can sense Kazuki, he has yet to move. If he hasn’t made his move, then there should still be time right?)
Danny didn’t know the answer to his own question nor did he have any time to figure it out. He gave Asuna a knowing look and she nodded back. Her eyes lit up with purple light as the element of space came to her. She found it a bit difficult at first, as this energy literally had to move past the flow of the rest of the energy heading south but after a few moments, she wrestled it out of this mighty river-like pull and activated the magic circles.
Shin walked over to Danny and punched his metal side.
*Clank*
“You know, I never thanked you for saving my life. As a matter of fact, no one here did. I guess everyone is just caught up in the euphoria and the like but it doesn’t change the fact that you did something many would deem impossible. No, it basically was impossible. To use your aura even though your magic and soul were being suppressed by Titans. Not only that you got through their battlefield and even opened a hole through their combined power to call for help. Even going so far as to negotiate and convince another Titan, those crazy eccentric bastards and yet you pulled it out of your ass and got us saved.”
…
A silence separated the two but Shin wasn’t one for quiet and just out and said it.
“I was said when you died and I know you must hate me for hooking up with the very person who caused your death. Even I didn’t know I’d end up with her…All I wanted to say is thank you. Through all of the shit, thank you for still having my back.”
Danny’s metallic brows furrowed.
“You should stick with jokes. You’re much better at those instead of the sentimental.”
Shin smiled before taking a step forward and into the flashing magic circle. Just as he was about to disappear he laughed.
“Hehe, your right. I’ll see your metal ass in a few so don’t get rusty while I’m gone.”
Just as Shin was vanishing, Danny whispered.
“I’ll always have your back, that’s what friends are for, idiot.”
*FLASH*
Shin vanished, whether he heard it or not, Danny didn’t know.
Danny felt some resentment and anger for Shin. It was for the exact reason that he mentioned. Him ending up with Triska really was fucked. At the same time, Shin remained his friend why even Danny didn’t know. Maybe it really was the fact that Danny knew how Shin covered his pain with jokes. He was one who hid his sadness with a laugh so when he spoke with his heart, it was easily felt by others and Danny could tell how genuine of a person Shin really was. Maybe this was why he could still be Shin’s friend.
Danny still held anger for Triska but as for Shin, he couldn’t hate him.
Precious time was ticking away. Danny placed all of that shit to the back of his mind and called out to the volunteers.
“There is no time to waste! Hurry through the magic gates. Rember, the people don’t know what’s going on and when you take from their shops they will wish to defend themselves and their property. There is no time to stop and explain to them. Rush in, grab the materials and rush back through the gates as quickly as you possibly can. The more materials you get, the better chance humanity has at surviving all of this. This plan has one chance, do not fail!”
With this, the volunteers didn’t hesitate. All of the gates were ready. In a single rush, they all ran towards different magic circles. Each one went to a different city around the continent. In front of each of these circles carved on the ground was the name of the city. Those familiar with that particular city would rush forth. If multiple people went to the same city, they would split up and hit different shops all around the city. As these soldiers, Mages, and others rushed into these gates, so to did Sam, Kimi, Nunully, Triska, and even King Brian. Danny protected Asuna just in case any more suppression-like effects escaped from the south. Meanwhile, the rest of the people who stayed behind began to prep for those returning.

A distance away, Zephris and Kazuki came to a stop as they both felt Fera’s energy skyrocket.
“Kazuki, she’s already started. I can finish the rest, you need to move now!”
