【Liera’s POV】
⟦You have died. Would you like to try again?⟧
Eh? What? I have died?
How is that possible? Who killed me? When did I die? How did I die?
However, the luminous message in blue blinking in front of me, along with the darkness surrounding me and the absence of all sensations in my body all pointed to that once fact: I had died.
…………………………
So what?
I quickly answered yes and my consciousness returned to my completely fine body. In front of me was Jack, albeit a bit farther than before.
“What did you do?”
Unable to hold my curiosity and to calm the uneasiness in my heart, I asked the first question that came in my mind.
“I simply killed you. And Triskellion, true to its abilities, revived you. That’s all.”
That’s all? That’s fucking all?! I was on the verge of impaling him, my full attention was on him, and yet he killed me? When? I never saw him move even a single muscle. I never saw him looking at me. I never saw him building the mana to counterattack.
So when the fuck did he kill me?!
“Are you perhaps thinking ‘how did I kill you’? I just lopped off your head.”
“What?”
He lopped off my head? When?!
“See? Just like this.”
Eh?
⟦You have died. Would you like to try again?⟧
That cold blinking message in blue once again informed me of my demise. I reflexively answered yes without even comprehending what had happened. Jack was still standing at his place, and there was not a single drop of blood on him.
I was killed once again. Just then-
“KRAAAAAAAAAAGHHH!”
A mighty roar shook the air and ground. I reflexively looked above me- clearly a bad move in front of an enemy like Jack- and saw that high up in the sky, a really large black dragon was rapidly flying over to us.
“Shit!”
I wanted to run, but I doubt I could outrun that dragon. But that amount of time where I hesitated was enough for that dragon to come over to us. It hovered above us for a bit, then closed his wings and dived straight towards Jack.
“Jack!”
I tried warning him, but I was already too late: the dragon was already upon him. However, just before the dragon’s large body could hit him and bury him into the ground, it abruptly shrunk in size and turned into a human man. That man gently landed on the ground in front of Jack and raised his hand.
“Yo, Boss! It was taking you too long so I came to check up on you!”
Huh?
“That’s because this dumb woman is being stubborn.”
Jack sighed and pointed at me.
“Woman?” The man turned to look at me. “Ah, you are talking about her? Hmm, now that I look at her, she’s a hottie!”
Huh?
“Say, what’s your name?”
However, his next sentence was spoken right in my ears, because he already closed the distance between us.
“What?!”
I tried attacking him with the sword, but he easily caught the blade between his index finger and thumb as if he was catching a butterfly.
“Hooo, you are quite hot-minded! I like you! Would you like to grab a cup of coffee after this affair is over?”
He flirted as his lecherous eyes licked up my entire body.
“Hey, don’t interfere with my work.”
Just then, Jack grabbed his shoulder and threw him in the air, but the man nimbly landed on the ground and groaned.
“Eeeeeh boss! It’s no good having such beautiful women to yourselves!”
“I said, don’t interfere with my work.”
Jack’s eyes narrowed and he replied coldly, to which the man shrieked.
“Hiiiiih! I understand I understand! I won’t interfere!”
Jack turned to face me.
“So-”
“Ah boss, what about after your work is done?”
Jack’s expression stiffened and turned demonic. He turned around and beckoned at that man.
“Come here.”
“I don’t think I can after seeing your expression……….”
“Come here.”
“Ok ok geez! I won’t speak again! Just don’t kill me!”
“Interfere once more and I’ll cook you and eat you. Dragon meat is delicious anyway.”
“So violent!”
That man shrieked and made an action of sealing his lips. After taking care of that man, he turned back to me.
“What do you want with me, Jack Hargreave?”
What does he hope to achieve by bringing me here? He has enough power to kill me without me even noticing it, a dragon who is probably as strong as Shiggurath is on his beck and call, he able to bring me to Hell. Most of all, he knew about Balgaar and still treated him like a pawn.
“I’ll be blunt as I’ve other important matters to attend to as well. There’s a traitor in your side.”
“…..What do you mean?”
“I’m talking about that man who sent you with us to bury us in the dungeon. He was the one who stabbed Susan in the back, not Regina. He knew about Balgaar being in that dungeon but still sent you because he wanted to kill you as well.”
Is he talking about Azell? What nonsense is he spouting out now?
“You seriously expect me to believe that?”
“Of course. Believe in me, for what I say is the truth.”
The truth, huh?
“Forget it, I’m at fault for asking you.”
“Oya?”
His eyes narrowed.
“I was there when it happened: I clearly saw how Regina and Shiggurath had betrayed Susan and killed her. So there’s no way in hell I would believe your bullshit.”
I was there, yet I couldn’t protect her. That fact has always gnawed at my heart.
“Hmm, I see.” But Jack nonchalantly muttered, and a grin appeared on his face. “By the way, Liera. Let me ask you: what do you live for?”
“I have no interest in telling that to an enemy.”
“Hmm, well, that also makes sense.”
With that, he turned around to face that dragon.
“Hey Walter, tell me something. I’m being polite, aren’t I?”
He asked as he started walking away from me. His back, at first glance was inviting me to attack him, but I knew that that unguarded way of walking was just a bait. And so, I silently waited at my position.
“Well, you did kill her twice, but yeah, you’re being polite.”
He’s polite even after killing me twice? Just what kind of twisted standards do they have for politeness?
“Then I’m sure that you can testify to Samuel that I did respect Liera and tried to politely bring her onto our side, and that I was forced to do what I’m about to do.”
Samuel? So he was the one who got me involved in this mess!
“Of course I can, boss.”
Jack turned around upon listening that, with a crazed bloodthirsty expression on his face.
“Well then, Walter. Start the Duel.”
“Yepp!”
With that, the dragon named Walter appeared between the two of us.
“Well then, ladies and gentleman. Today, I’m here to bring you another Duel! But wait, this one is really special! On one side is our Supreme Commander of the Legions of Death! The transcendent being, the Second Progenitor, the master of the Angels, the Lord of Hubris and Vanity and.. the Adjudicator. The one and only, Jack Hargreave!”
After announcing that in a jolly tone he started clapping. Jack silently waited for him to continue.
But what were those titles he had spouted? The transcendent being? And what even is the Adjudicator? I can somewhat agree with that Lord of Hubris one though.
“And on the other hand, we have-! Hmm, who are you, by the way?”
He muttered to me in a small voice.
“What are you doing? If you want to fight then say so, I’ll take on both of you at once.”
Walter simply chuckled.
“Believe me, miss. I too would like to have you all for myself. But…..” The smile on his face vanished and what swirled within his eyes was pity. “But the one you’re up against is our boss. And let me assure you, you’re going to see true hell. So, I’m going to need your name.”
True hell, huh. That might be true. Our previous exchange has already shown me that Jack stronger than me. He is without a doubt a monster. Going against him is truly a fool’s act.
But I don’t have any other choice. It doesn’t seem like they’ll let me go, so forcing my way through them is my only option right now.
I might not be able to do it on my first try. Heck, I would not be able to defeat Jack even on the thousandth try. But what about the millionth? The billionth? And what about the trillionth? Yes, as long as I have Triskellion, I won’t die. And as long as I won’t die, I won’t lose.
And in the end, I will prevail.
And so, I decided to play along with Walter.
“Liera von Vetto. I’m afraid I have no ostentatious titles, so you’ll have to make do with my name.”
“All right then! On the other side is Liera Von Vetto! Let the Duel, begin!”
As soon he signalled the start of this duel, I channelled mana in my entire body and dashed towards Jack, my sword hungering for his blood.
Let’s see how long you’ll hold against my tenacity, Jack Hargreave!
