ShangriLa Frontier Chapter 557 Part 1
ShangriLa Frontier Chapter 557: A Nostalgic Old Friend Seen From the Perspective of the Swallow’s Ideals Part 1
Up until now Tsubame Kazuya was always convinced that he was managing to live a very proper life as a human being.
Just like any respectable member of society, he was abiding by the commonly agreed on morality and laws in his everyday life. Only occasionally he would get that wild urge to shoot someone right to the face for no apparent reason, but he would never allow himself to act on those urges. And right now, when he was about to inherit his father’s company, the same one that managed to release Survival Island some time ago, his excitement was reaching its peak. And it was clearly showing on his face. Not so long ago, he even founded a trip around the world for his father as a sort of farewell gift, and thanks to the combination of all of the above factors the development of Scrap Gunman was proceeding smoothly and without any needless interruption.
「How about we start getting excited here?」
「Ah! Mister President! Please look at this right here! I think it’s safe to assume that it’s a great success!」
「Good, good. Now I wonder, where exactly should we go on our company’s trip next year?」
「Well, it’s a little too early to be thinking about that at this point in time, if you were to ask me~…… But personally, I would like to go and visit Macau at least once.」
「…… Say, how much did you happen to spent during that last trip to Las Vegas again?」
「Approximately one million yen, sir.」
It was because of this humanity that he seemed to genuinely concern about the well-being of his somewhat gambling-addicted subordinates, who lived too much in the present and did not give their future that much thought.
…… Yes, when it comes to Kazuya, if someone was to check it up on him, they would find nothing more but a prim and proper human being. He was just as any other sane person should be.
And when it comes to Scrap Gunman, Kazuya wanted to put his everything into that game, every last bit of passion and nostalgia that was still smoldering deep within him. And because of the certain “Supporter” that his company managed to obtain from Utopia company, he was fairly sure that he would be able to achieve it: the full reproduction of the feelings of firing, reloading, and handling of the firearms of different sizes and shapes. And as if to confirm the feeling of success that Kazuya was feeling from this project, the pre-orders for both the game and the Augmented Reality system were already flooding in, showing no signs of stopping anytime soon.
This of course, meant that the Swallow’s Nest would receive yet another huge portion of money to further its development and it would allow it to tackle even harder challenges in the future. This was really important, as the company always tried to stay at the absolute forefront when it came to new technologies, and rarely dealt with other companies such as Utopia. And in this situation Kazuya smelled a chance for profit. On the side note, everyone was saying that he managed to inherit his sense for business from his father.
「Now I wonder, are we going to see someone being able to clear it? Or maybe not?」
According to the information Kazuya received, some of the JGE guests who entered with the special tickets have already tried out Scrap Gunman, but so far there was no one who would actually be able to clear the demo version.
One of the factors here might be the fact that the difficulty is simply set so high, but above all else……
「Right about now we have…… Let’s see, hmm? A couple of high school students?」
「They are actually kind of amazing. They have never before used the system, but they are adapting to it at an extremely fast rate. So far they are yet to have any loses on their end.」
「Hmmm, you don’t say?」
In this demo version of the game, while the difficulty level was artificially increased, there is also an additional hurdle for the players to overcome: adapting to the new system on the fly, which is not all that easy of a thing to do. Doing that, Kazuya thought, the players could enjoy themselves with a challenging experience as well as make sure that the action would not end all too fast, before the players could properly enjoy it. …… Hmm, oh, so that’s it, huh? The currently playing people, the pair of high schoolers, were taking some small damage here and there, but they showed no signs of stopping or becoming discouraged with the non-stopping onslaught of the machine enemies.
The difficulty level of this demo version is set on the hardware level of the product, which means that there is no way of changing it. In other words, Kazuya made sure that the demo version would be adequately challenging, but not impossible to beat. And doing just that actually took a lot of effort and time. Unlike the highest difficulty of “Survival Island”, which was set so high that only someone experienced in various VR games and the Survival Island itself would hope to accomplish it, the difficulty level for this demo version could be summarized as the “Hard” mode in most video games. Which means that in order to clear it, the player would need to have good motor skills in general, would need to be experienced in the games of the similar genre, as well as be well accustomed to the Scrap Gunman itself. It is a difficulty level that should be challenging for a normal person to clear, but at the same time be something that the employee of the Swallow’s Nest would clear with relative ease.
However, the two high schoolers that were playing right now were in stark contrast to that general consensus that everyone would have.
「I wonder if the girl is doing any sports? Honestly, her movements are so smooth that it is actually quite terrifying.」
「You can say something like that just by looking at her?」
「As a tester, I have seen various people testing Augmented Reality products. Some of them play soccer, or train martial arts. And the difference in the way they tend to move is something that shows quite clearly.」
「I can imagine. It was so amazing that the President even decided to call such people “Muay Thai” for a while. It was hilarious, but the one being called as such was never actually laughing for some bizarre reason.」
「Oho? Then, how about I start calling you a “Single Point” In memory of what transpired in Las Vegas?」
The two must have divided their roles that they would be playing beforehand. The girl was taking care of the small mobs while the boy was fighting the bigger and tougher opponents, and the two were always moving in such a swift and natural way that they never actually interrupted one another in what they were doing. And yes, the girl must have trained in some sort of martial arts, because the way in which her movements were swiftly transitioning from one to another was something that one would find difficult to accomplish in your everyday life without any proper training.
