The night when Shiinamachi-senpai hosted another one of her sleepover parties.
The time was roughly 20:00 PM.
The atmosphere in senpai’s room was certainly getting even more lively than usual.
「Aika-san, you’re so cute!」
「Uhm, Shiinamachi-senpai, that’s the third time you’re saying that.」
「My oh my, really? Please forgive me, Aika-san, the words just kinda flew right out of my mouth.」
As you can see senpai was thoroughly enjoying the fact that I’ve brought my sister along with me.
I had no idea that she’ll be so smitten with her, but if that means they’re going to get along with each other then I see nothing wrong about it. Although I have to say, I was a little worried about Aika being overwhelmed by being around so many people older than her, but much to my relief she was unexpectedly sociable. You can even say that she fitted into our crowd right off the bat.
Well, I guess I shouldn’t really be too surprised about that, should I? After all, it was Aika who taught me all that I know about heart, emotions and the importance of communication with others, so it should stand to reason that she would be quite skilled at using the social skills which she has imparted onto me. I’m really glad that I took her with me today.
「So Aika-chan, have you come here today to personally check if Shiinamachi-senpai is worthy of becoming Monjiro-kun’s bride-to-be and your sister-in-law?」
「Yes, that was in my agenda, among other things.」
「Aika?!」
My precious little sister gave an outrageous reply to Fujisato’s question. Senpai just looked at her and Kuhoh and tilted her head to the side, to which they just turned away from her with their mouths covered with their hands and started giggling furiously.
Yeah, excitement sure is the name of the game here.
As for yours truly, being the only male surrounded by a circle of females was still uncomfortable, all of the undeniable eye candy aside. Being the only guy in the group I decided to do the only sensible thing that was to do and so I’ve made my tactical retreat into senpai’s kitchen. That way I could still be useful by serving food and drinks to the girls without getting in the way of their fun. However, this master plan had one critical weakness: with my hearing enhanced by the years of my training as an assassin, I will still be able to hear every word they are going to say, and if the others will jump on Aika to spill some dirt on me… hoo boi, this is going to get hella awkward. I really wanted to believe in her, but considering the situation, pretty much everything can happen now. On a side note, has this situation happened before? Because I definitely feel like this situation has happened before.
So there I was, cooped up in the safety of my temporary kitchen base for quite a while… until the time to refill the drinks has come.
「Hmm…」
Opening the refrigerator, I noticed that there was a severe shortage of Oolong Tea. When it comes to girls and their refreshments preferences, it was obvious that high-calorie beverages like orange juice or cola were out of the question, so… oh my God we are doing this again! I don’t know if you remember, but last time when we were having a sleepover party here the same exact thing happened! Coincidence? I sure hope so. Either that, or senpai is secretly a Oolong Tea enthusiast who drinks unholy amounts of it on a daily basis.
All right, putting my strange feeling of déjà vu aside, what kind of drink would be best suited to everyone’s tastes? Oh that’s right! The Barley Tea and sports drinks which Kuhoh bought from the convenience store on the way here! She must’ve anticipated that we’re going to run out of some of the drinks rather fast and so brought that much more with her. She truly is my dependable kouhai! Now we won’t have to worry about not having anything to drink, and if there’ll be any leftovers, they can be safely stored in the fridge for an extended period of time without going spoilt. That way nothing will come to waste!
I placed the cups in the sink and replaced them with new paper ones to which I poured the Barley tea. When I was about to take them to the girls, I just so happened to overhear a curious piece of conversation.
「Senpai, you really like Monjiro’s sister, huh?」
「Yes, I do. I mean, she’s has the looks and posture like a porcelain doll, but at the same time she has that air of maturity around her. It’s so mysterious, just like with Jiro-kun.」
「So what are you waiting for? Just marry Monjiro-kun and she’ll become your sister-in-law!」
By purposefully using the word 「marry」 Fujisato made Shiinamachi-senpai go red like an apple, complete with steam coming out of her ears. Nice one, Fujisato!
If I was there together with them I would have probably reacted the same way senpai did, but since I’m well and far away I can just enjoy the wonderful sight of embarrassed senpai without worrying about being caught.
「Uhm, I don’t know how should I put it, but I think it’s still too early for my brother to engage in that kind of commitment.」
Wow, Aika just said something that an overly protective parent would say, but I kind of understand where she’s coming from. I like Shiinamachi-senpai, but skipping on all the bases and going straight for the homerun is simply out of the question. After all, there is a proper order to these things that should always be maintained. That way, we’ll be able to avoid the 「You’re not worthy of my brother, you homewrecking sk*nk!」 scenario.
「Ah, Aika-chan, could it be… that you’re worried that Shiinamachi-senpai might snatch your beloved brother away from you?」
「…. Just a little, I guess.」
Awwww, I think my heart just melted a little! I know Kuhoh was probably teasing her, but I honestly didn’t expect her to give such an honest answer! Could it be… nah, I’m probably overthinking this, but maybe, just maybe… was Aika jealous about me? Knowing that she wanted to monopolize me for herself made me feel happy as an older brother, but as a man I was just a tad bit worried. Even so, I’m well and truly glad that my friends seem to have accepted Aika without any issues and vice versa. I know that they are all vastly different from one another and that might have made getting along with them a little difficult, but luckily for me Aika was apparently that type of girl who could befriend just about anyone as long as she got to know them well enough. Fujisato has that 「Happy-go-lucky, true-to-herself」 attitude, so I knew she’d get along with her without any problems. Kuhoh is not the type who’d get into conflicts with others unless provoked, Shiinamachi-senpai is kindness incarnate, and Shiki is… well, Shiki I guess. She was the one I was the most worried about since up to this point whenever I brought her up during the conversations Aika appeared to be quite skeptical of her, but now that she actually met the person herself maybe she changed her mind a little?
Anyway, long story short: I’m glad that all the girls are able to get along with each other just fine and that there won’t be any needles catfights among them. Yup, peace and quiet for the win.
「Monjiro, how long are you going to just stand there with that moronic grin on your face? This Barley tea won’t deliver itself to us, you know?」
「Whoa!」
I don’t know when she did it, but Shiki was now standing behind me! Was I really so absorbed in watching the others that I didn’t even noticed when she sneaked up on me?
「You scared the hell out of me! I thought I told you not to do that again, right? Or if you have to do this no matter what, make sure to warn me ahead of time, all right?!」
「Sorry, Monjiro, but scaring you is the sole reason for my existence.」
Ugh, how is she always able to 1Up me like that? Again, I feel like a similar event happened once already. Only the last time was when we suspected Fujisato and Kuhoh of being our enemies and set up a trap for them. Thankfully today should be free of such attractions.
However, in the corner of my mind the contents of Yorugao’s phone call and Fujisato’s message were still fresh. I was still worried about the 「Legendary Knight」. His abilities were simply too dangerous to just brush them aside like it was nothing. Not only was he apparently able to manipulate the senses of those around him and alter his appearance, but also transfer the wounds he received onto them. Even though senpai and Shiki told me time after time not to worry about him yet, the possibility of him lurking somewhere nearby was still a real threat.
Moreover, I don’t understand why he appeared only before Fujisato and Kuhoh. What did he want achieve by doing that? According to Fujisato it was to just issue a warning, but could we really trust the words of someone like that? And what does he want from senpai? Just what kind of relationship does he have with her? So many questions and no answers in sight.
That is what scares me the most about our current situation.
