CHAPTER 173: THE LIGHT OF THE KINGDOM

“Naoko-chan, how did you persuade that dragon to let us pass? It didn’t even attack us in the first place. How can that be possible?”

“Mia-san, it is all about who you know. Besides, I feel bad about that poor guy. He is stuck in this dungeon, not having a real entity to be able to fly away, and yet still being bound by racial rules. It’s kind of sad when you think about it.”

As a dragon’s bride, other dragons would not attack me first, that is one big plus for me since I can avoid annoyingly hard and long battles. Especially since they would also have good opinion about me from the get-go, so talking things out is not a problem.

“But it still doesn’t explain everything. Where did you learn draconic?”

“As I said, I know a dragon. And language comes from a skill. Could we not talk about that? What matters is that we are able to go past him without a problem.”

Mia-san looked unhappy, but didn’t pry further about it. Good, now I can calm down. The dragon was able to tell me some juicy elementals about this dungeon. Apparently, it is over three thousand years old and holds the brightest and purest light element within it. I guess that’s why all the light elementals were so hyperactive.

He was also kind enough to tell me how humans would come down here to be killed, or very rarely to be given rule over light element through an ancient rite.

This caught my attention because it is the first time I was able to learn about being able to grant magic power to other people. It made me all the more determined to find out what this place is hiding. Especially so I can find that brightest and purest light element that he mentioned and see for myself what it is.

We continued walking further down the corridor that started to resemble sewers instead of prisons. I could not believe that something like this could be hidden under a castle without anyone knowing about it.

“Naoko-chan, look at this. Don’t you think that these doors look different from the rest?”

I looked at the door she was pointing at. So far all of the doors were made with the same design, very bland and made from cast iron. This one, just like others, was black and plain, however there was a special pattern engraved onto them. Upon closer inspection, I realized that the doors weren’t made of iron, but pure gold. They only painted them black to make it fit in with the rest of them.

“Good eyes Mia-san, let’s check what’s behind them. They are quite heavy, so lend me a hand.”

Using all of our power, we were barely able to push it aside. When the door was opened, a bright light coming from within the room blinded both of us. The light was very bright, but I could not feel any warmth from it. In fact if I would describe it, I could only say that it was filled with hatred. This thing, whatever it may be, was definitely not happy to have us here.

“It’s so pretty, how can such a thing exist in a place like this?”

I looked at Mia-san who was mesmerized. She had a glassy look on her face as she stared at the room. How can she not sense the coldness of its source and dislike it is spreading?

“Puny humans, you dare to keep me here and steal my light. I curse you, I curse all your children.”

I froze upon hearing that sound. No way, somebody was alive in that room? How can that be? Is it the dungeon master? I entered the room leaving Mia-san still standing in the entrance. The first thing that I noticed was a sinister, crimson red magic circle painted on the floor. And inside that circle I could see a humanoid creature well over two meters tall with a faceless feature.

I recall seeing something like this before. I am sure I saw it a long time ago, which I why I couldn’t help but exclaim in surprise.

“You’re an elemental, a high elemental at that!”

“This is odd, you can see me and even recognize my form human. Tell me, did you come here to steal from me as well?”

It was still angry, but I could feel the amount of hostility decrease. Instead it was replaced with caution and curiosity.

“I have come across somebody similar to you. I do not have any plans to steal, I arrived here purely out of curiosity.”

“I sense thunder in you and you have many children around you. So what is that you want then Spirit Magician? Why did you come before me?”

“Honestly, I want to avoid my marriage and I thought I could cause some trouble to people if I appear here. I really didn’t know I would come across a high elemental such as yourself here? Why don’t you leave here? I have the feeling that you don’t like it here?”

I assumed it was trapped, but right now the magic circle was inactive. From what I could conclude, it should be able to leave at any moment.

“This circle stops anything from leaving. I would be long gone if I had a way of leaving.”

“Then is there a way I can help. To be honest, I hate seeing you stuck in here. It is unsightly and unbefitting of someone of your status.”

The hostility completely disappeared. The poor elemental was certainly waiting for a chance to escape all these years. And right now I was giving him that exact chance to escape, no wonder he decided to stop all hostility against me.

“This magic is very cruel and to free me you would have to pay a terrible price. Bind a piece of your soul to the magic circle and then burn it. Only then will you be able to break it. If you do that, the pain you will experience will be enormous. However, if you are able to do it, I give you my word that your effort will not go unrewarded.”

Burn my own soul? I was skeptical, this wasn’t an easy task and he was right about it. But I decided to risk it. The prize really was tempting and after all, it was only a part of my soul.

“Very well. I, Maeda Naoko, swear by the name of Thanatos to help you break away from this place.”

“Be careful child, that name is powerful and swearing upon it can bring your trouble. However hearing it from you makes me feel at ease. Begin, I shall assist you if needed.”
