CHAPTER 224: WILD CHASE

“We have six barrels of gill-head bream, starting price is 3 silver per barrel.”

Holy smokes, that is dirt cheap. I immediately bid. For a barrel I will be willing to pay even if the price was three gold. Seriously, how can they earn money selling it so cheap.

In the end I got three barrels for a total price of a single gold coin. I didn’t go for all six because I can’t leave the others without anything. I don’t think they would be able to live without getting anything.

“Our next haul is a barrel of striped-red mullet. This is a rare haul and the price is a gold coin. Place your bids.”

I went for it as soon as it was announced. Preserving it is no big deal and there is so much you can do with different types of fish so getting as much as I can is imperative. In the end I paid five gold for it. I was getting a lot of dirty looks from other competitors who didn’t like me outbidding them every single time.

“Now we have a more popular item. Twelve barrels of mackerel. Starting price is two silver per barrel.”

Ooh mackerel, that is a must have. I decided to take at least five barrels. Who knows when an opportunity like this will happen again? I will only be here for a week or two depending on Vitou. In the end I was able to get six barrels. The competition was really fierce.

“Next is bass…”

“The following item…”

I knew that I was going overboard, but having all this fish is comforting. I could enjoy such food for years with the haul that I gained today. Sadly there was no tuna for sale, nor there was any large fish. And other seafood was not being sold. I asked about shellfish and crabs, and I was informed such items are never sold here. However, they did tell me I might be able to find them if I go to the docks early at dawn. Apparently elderly fishermen would sell them from time to time.

I spent a total of 20 gold buying fish and I must say I am proud of my haul. If I am able to find some time before departure I would definitely go again and grab whatever I can. The one thing that I must do is visit the docks to see if I can get some other seafood.

I left the fish market behind me and moved towards the outskirts of town. I decided to take a look outside the city as well and check out the beach. Maybe even talk to some commoners and see if I can learn anything more about the city.

***VITOU’S POV***

I should have told her about not going out. Or at the very least saying that waking up early is rude or something. Why does she know no fear staying in a foreign place? What if she gets attacked. It’s not like she doesn’t have a huge target on her back.

“Ishikawa, Nakamura, are there any news?”

“No, boss. And I even checked door to door.”

Where the heck is she? It is already way past noon. How does one disappear like this? I checked every single sightseeing place in this town and nothing. Nobody saw her. What is she doing in this place if it isn’t sightseeing?

“Your Highness, we still haven’t checked outside the city. Or the guild for the matter of fact.”

“She’s not at the guild, I checked there when we split up. I thought she took on a request, but no such luck. Also I asked Marc to inform all the guards to not let her go outside. I doubt she will go out considering she didn’t take on any requests.”

I wanted to make sure she doesn’t escape and that is why I forbid her from leaving the town. I knew that it would not be able to stop her, but I was hoping it would at the very least stall her and let us know where she is going if she left the city.

“Why don’t we just let her be? She said she will be back. So far even in Kapitalia she didn’t escape once in the past three weeks and always returned to the castle.”

Looking at Nakamura he was oddly relaxed. Well she does have enough strength, but I am still worried. However, it does look like none of us are getting anywhere with our search. I nodded and we began walking back to the castle. The way back took us past a farmer’s market which looked deserted for some reason. This is not something I was used to seeing. Did something happen and there is a bad harvest so not many people are selling things.

I walked past a group of sellers that were drinking together at a table and upon hearing their conversation I froze immediately. Without pardon I interrupted them.

“Can you repeat that?”

“Huh? Who are you? Don’t you have any manners?”

“Shut up and tell me! What did you say earlier? If you value your life you will repeat it word for word.”

I snapped and immediately intimidated the man. He squealed like a girl and started shaking.

“I said a pale black haired, black eyed chick came and bought out half of my stock of food I was selling.”

These words caught my attention. These were not common features found around here and the tone he was using sounded like she was a complete stranger, someone that he has never met before.

“And then?”

The man gulped. I stared and waited for him to answer.

“And… and… if she comes by tomorrow… I… I will make sure to make sure so that she not only spends all her money, but also gives me even more. After all… after all…. Did you see her body and looks? Even trying to hide it, you… you can tell it is first class. This…. This… this old man will make sure she screams his name tomorrow.”

I punched him and knocked him out. After that I questioned the rest about when and where they saw her. Lastly, I left them with a word of warning.

“Next time I won’t be so lenient. Do tell him when he wakes up, I do not want to hear another word of slander against my fiancée and future Queen of Elicia.”
