CHAPTER 244: THE GRAND GIFT
“Your Majesty, what is the meaning of this?”
The invitation presentation was supposed to act as a way to introduce me to the noble circle of Vilikis. That is why such an occasion happens during a banquet or some other social gathering. Right now, in this throne room, there are only a few court members. Not even a quarter of noble houses of Tiremia are represented here. It is no wonder Vitou is demanding an explanation.
“Vitou, you must understand. With happenings from yesterday, many are worried and it will be hard to organize another gathering. Since it is like that, why not just do it now. That way you won’t have to stay here any longer and be reminded of that tragic event.”
Hah, what good words. You want us out of the castle so that we don’t find out the Sword of Fire is missing. How cunning. Unfortunately for you, all of us already know everything that has happened and even how incompetent you are at keeping news from spreading out.
“Even if the world was ending, there should be respect shown to us rather than this farce. If this is what the Royal house of Vilikis wants, don’t mind me being rude in return.”
Vitou was about to storm out, but I held him back. I still haven’t received my compensation. How can we leave right now?
“Your Majesty, please forgive him. You must be stressed dealing with national matters all the time and I don’t want to add on to your troubles. We shall present the invitation and receive the gift. Once everything is done, Your Majesty can deal with other matters at hand without worrying about entertaining us.”
I pinched Vitou’s arm to a point where there were tears in his eyes when I realized that he wanted to protest against the King some more. I looked at him begging him not to go against my plans. If you ask me, I also don’t want to spend another day in the castle. Once we leave, I can go back to planning on how to ruin my own wedding in the grandest style.
“Duchess, you are quite sensible. Vitou is lucky to have found a wife such as yourself.”
“Your Majesty, you overpraise.”
I motioned Vitou to give him the invitation and in return he received an old wooden box. I didn’t know what was inside, but I didn’t like the feeling it gave off. I was sure that whatever that item was, it was powerful and extremely dangerous.
“This time is said to be created when this world was still young and Titans lived in it. This had been in our family for generations, but so far it didn’t have a fate with any of my ancestors. I present it to you in hopes that it will help you on your way to greater power.”
“Thank you for your kindness. With this, the two of us shall retire and leave. Farewell.”
The King waved his hand and dismissed the two of us. I smiled, but on the inside I was boiling with anger. If you fear me, why do you send such an obviously dangerous gift? And why do you disrespect us this way? I fear that in the future, the relationship between two kingdoms will go downhill.
I left the throne room and immediately hurried back to my room. Vitou followed behind me with Taichi, Daisuke and Fulgy who have been waiting outside the entire time.
“Nao-chan, what was that earlier? You’re not the type to take such insults lying down.”
“Oh, I am definitely not. I am merely contemplating how to get back at them and to what degree. It will all depend on the ‘gift’ they have sent me.”
I placed the box on the table and carefully opened it. I didn’t dare act careless at all. As soon as the cover of the box was lifted, I felt terrible pressure coming from it. Before I could see the contents of it a stinging pain pierced my head and everything around me turned black. I could no longer move. I felt like a prisoner somewhere where no light can pierce through.
***VITOU’S POV***
I still couldn’t believe the conduct of the Royal Family. After I return to Kapitalia, I must increase my vigilance against them. If they try to do something against me and my kingdom, I must be ready to retaliate.
I looked up at Naoko who was obviously angry. I don’t know what exactly she is planning, but I prayed the King was sensible enough to give her a decent gift, otherwise he wouldn’t know what hit him once she makes a move.
The moment she opened the box, I felt a cool breeze and shivered. Yet despite that, I approached to see what was inside the box. Peaking into it, I saw it was empty. I wanted to storm out the very same moment, but seeing Naoko bleeding from her old scar gave me a terrible fright.
“Stay here, don’t touch her unless you want her to die!”
The Archduke appeared out of thin air and immediately set up a barrier around her. I was in shock. I had no idea he possessed Light Magic as well. This man is even more deeply hidden than any of us have thought. He, on the other hand, didn’t pay attention to any of us present and was fully focused on Nao-chan. The worry on his face was more than obvious.
“What happened? Why did she become like this?”
“Someone dared to hide a relic of Titans. If it were anyone else, they wouldn’t be affected, but she carries his aura, so the relic’s hatred will target her.”
Relic of Titans? If that is true, then it is a heretic item. What is the King thinking, giving such a gift to Nao-chan? It is almost as if he wants her to be killed by the church. This is by no means a gift you want to give to express goodwill.
“What can I do for her?”
“Pray and hope she survives. There isn’t anything else you can do.”
