CHAPTER 265: LEAVING THE CASTLE
I spent the next five days doing absolutely nothing productive. I didn’t even bother leaving my wing of the castle, mainly because I knew I would run into those nobles that would want me to join their parties and dinners. This was all the more true once the declaration about my governorship over the newly named Sunset Islands spread out. There are countless nobles without any land, and only a handful that can rule over an area. That handful is the one to be respectful of since they have real power behind them.
It was during this lazy time that I received a notice that made me snap back to reality and put an end to my self-confinement. The notice was about the trial of the Church of Twelve Gods that will be held a month from now. Since I didn’t belong to the Church, I had to pass the test of the twelve archbishops to let them approve my marriage with Vitou.
I must say, marrying into the Royal Family is such a pain. There are so many formalities to go through even before I get to thinking about making a wedding dress. I was told that I would pass this test without any effort, but I can’t help but be curious about this upcoming test.
Led by my curiosity, I went to find Vitou. He should be more than familiar with this test. After all, unlike me, he is part of the Church. I went into his study where I found him hidden behind piles of papers and books.
“You should take a break. Or at the very least, you should go somewhere where you won’t be in danger of being buried alive if these things fall over.”
“Nao-chan, what brings you here? I thought you were avoiding all living creatures.”
He passed through the maze of books and papers and greeted me. I was confused with this scene, because I knew that he is not the type to tolerate such a mess. Especially not in his study.
“I have something to ask you. What’s with the books here? Are you looking for something? Maybe I can help you.”
“Don’t mention it. These are all reports on taxes in the first six months of the year. I put them off and now I have to deal with them. I also need to record the numbers and compare them to the reports of the past few years to make sure nothing is off. There is also a need to see if there are reports of any disasters and such. I can’t allow people to hide tax money.”
Oh, so he’s making sure there isn’t any tax evasion or corrupt nobles. I must say, he is quite meticulous about it.
“Can’t you let someone else do it? Or at least get them to help you review everything?”
“I let him take a break earlier. What do you want to know? I’m sure it isn’t about these reports. Let’s go out and talk.”
There was a small gazebo near the study where we sat down for some tea and snacks. I didn’t care about small talk and immediately got to the point.
“Tell me about the test of the Church that I need to take. Why do I need to go through it, since you already know that the marriage will be approved by the Church?”
“The main religion of the kingdom is that of the Twelve Gods. It cannot be allowed that the future Crown Princess is not approved by the Church. Don’t worry about it, since it is merely a formality. It is not the first time they conducted this test. Even the current Queen needed to go through it. Don’t think too much, all it needs is the twelve Archbishops to ask for blessings of their respective gods. As long as three blessings are given, the wedding can be held.”
My mouth twitched upon hearing that. If the guardians are the ones that give blessings, I might be in trouble. Or not. If I don’t pass the test, I won’t have to worry about my future. For once, I was glad I did not have good impressions about any of them and that they didn’t seem to like me. I never said any good words about them, and they didn’t like me stealing the spotlight reserved for their heroes.
“Really?! Only the blessings of the guardians are needed to pass the test? Wow, that is super easy. What if you can’t reach the needed number of blessings?”
“There was never a situation like that.”
In that case, I hope I will be the first one. His answer really made me feel better. I wanted to hug him, but still held back. I don’t want him to misunderstand me. Thankfully, we tactfully and silently agreed not to mention the small peck I gave him before.
“Thanks for explaining it to me. You’re the best. Anyways, I’m off. I’ll be taking Mia with me and going back to my mansion for a while. I won’t be back, so don’t go looking for me and sending someone to come pick me up. I’ll be busy in the coming days.”
“Fine, I’ll let you off for now.”
I smiled and left. Ever since we returned from Vilikis, I noticed that the number of guards around me has decreased. Vitou must have decided that I would not run away and relaxed his watch over me. Even now, he didn’t demand that I return to the castle every night.
I found Mia in my room and told her to bring her party to the mansion. Now that I am in a good mood, I might as well deal with things about Dragon’s Descent. Feeling elated, I left the castle alone through the front door for the first time and walked to my mansion with almost a skipping motion.
I must say, having my freedom back feels nice. I don’t remember the last time I went outside without having to worry about others finding me and bringing me back to the castle, or being carefully watched by guards sent in secret.
When I reached the front yard of the mansion, I was greeted by Ichi and Nii who long stopped being cute cubs and were ferocious guards. Or at least they would be, if they weren’t trying to squeeze in closer to let me pet them.
While I was busy calming down the two overexcited pets, every member of Dragon’s Descent rushed outside and stood in two lines, opening a path to the door and bowed down in greeting.
“””””Welcome back, Honorable Boss!!!!”””””
Their loud greeting startled me, but such familiarity made me feel warm. These guys, they never change, no matter how much time passes.
“I’m back, everyone.”
