CHAPTER 268: THE TRUTH THAT MUST NOT BE SPREAD
***VITOU’S POV***
The amount of paperwork that I had to deal with was not going down, no matter how fast I was working. Earlier, when Naoko came by, I took a much needed break. Sadly, she didn’t stay long and I had no more excuses to avoid work and had to go back to the study.
She did have a point, I should probably get someone else to help with this work. I sighed and continued comparing the records. I should be grateful that there haven’t been any problems in the past few years. The losses and gains from each territory matched with reports of the state of things in the first half of the year.
While going through the reports, I came across the reports of Sunset Islands. This area really is not well off. Naoko will not be able to gain much from this. Why did she choose such a poor area? Is it really because she doesn’t want to deal with this stuff? It does sound like something she would do. After all, she doesn’t like bothersome things and often does as she pleases.
I sighed and put away the records. Before I could take the next report, Nakamura barged into the study. His face was glum and I couldn’t help but frown. He has been in the library for the past few days, not even bothering to leave for the night. Judging from his expression, the results he got are not pretty.
“Your Highness, pardon my insolence, but may we talk somewhere more private.”
“Let’s go to my room. Prime Minister, I will have to ask you to work alone for a bit.”
I left with Nakamura and soon Ishikawa joined us. I don’t know if he already knew the outcome of Nakamura’s research, but he did say he had an idea about that man’s identity. There was no need to keep him out of the loop, and if his conjecture is correct, I want to know how he was able to come up with his guess.
After reaching my room, we went into the secret liquor room. This place should be the safest. I don’t have to worry about prying eyes here.
“Speak, what did you find out? Why are you looking so glum? Is the answer that bad?”
“Your Highness, I was not able to find the true identity of that man, but I was able to confirm one thing. He should be a god, one that has lived much longer than the twelve gods that have been known for so long.”
I was stunned. This shouldn’t be possible, before the twelve gods appeared, this world was lawless. There wasn’t anyone governing it, this is something every child knows. How come there is a new god all of a sudden? Moreover one that seems even older than known history.
“Could you be wrong?”
“I’m certain of it. He should be a deity that ruled even before titans and monsters overran this continent. There is no record of this specifically, but if taken everything into account it should be the only logical solution.”
I needed some time to digest this. I looked at Nakamura and Ishikawa, but aside from looking slightly unhappy, they didn’t seem to be as shocked. I could understand that they are not from this world and were not brought up believing in the twelve gods, but shouldn’t they make a fuss or something. I mean, they were the ones that met with twelve gods, why aren’t they disappointed that their gods are not the only ones in power?
“What else?”
“He should be the one Titans rebelled against. The Church destroyed most records of the time before twelve gods, so I can’t be completely sure. However, based on the things he said to the Archduke and the evidence of a great war where the race of Titans was exterminated, he should be the one that fought the Titans.”
No wonder he recognized that heretic item with only a glance. No wonder that item caused harm to Nao-chan. If that item really is a manifestation of hatred and she carries the same aura as that god, then being able to survive is a miracle. But why did everything about him disappear? I never heard about the Church of Thanatos. Could it be that the Church of Twelve Gods couldn’t stand the existence of some other god and intentionally destroyed it? If that is the truth, then the reputation they hold as a sacred institution will crumble. No wonder I was warned to never spread the truth if I find out about it.
“Ishikawa, you already guessed his identity, didn’t you?”
“No, I had no idea he was the one that Titans fought. I thought he was a god, but one from Earth. After all there are legends about a god of death called Thanatos in our world. I merely guessed that he was the same god. I mean, she does have the title ‘Death’s Daughter’. I guess it is only a coincidence that they are named the same.”
“I actually thought the same and wanted to confirm that, did not expect to find out something else. Although we don’t know his exact identity, we now know more about how Naoko-san arrived here and also it gives the explanation as to how she can grow so strong. If I am correct, the power of her god-patron should be above that of the twelve gods.”
“So your original world also has many gods, no wonder you can come to a conclusion like that and remain calm. From now on forget everything that you have learned about this topic and under no circumstances should you spread it out. I will give you a break for two days after which you will go and choose two more Heroes to add on as guards. I will leave it to you to train them. You have until the end of the month to get them familiar with the work. In the future,
Nao-chan will go to the Sunset Islands and I will bring the four of you together. If the two pass the test, I will let them officially join the Royal Guard.”
I want to have two more people that will be able to protect Naoko. Heroes have the best potential to grow as long as they are willing to do so. That is why I want to have two of them protecting her. I know she is strong, but there are some times where she can’t stay alert. I want to have someone protecting her, just in case that something unexpected happens.
“Yes, Your Highness.”
They left the room and I was left alone to think about everything they told me. To have one’s fundamental beliefs about the world shaken to the core really takes a toll on your mentality. There is no way I would be able to concentrate on any task I have to do. With that in mind, I let someone inform the Prime Minister and I took the rest of the day off. If I can’t calm down, I will go to Naoko and let her help me understand things about her patron.
