CHAPTER 276: ONE MONTH LATER
Things have been weird for the past month. Every day you would hear about a fight breaking out between Vitou and his father. At first it was only some small matters, at best you could say that they had differences of opinion about the said matter. However, as time went on, those differences became more obvious and you could sense something was brewing underneath.
This however had nothing to do with me, I merely was told the news by my contacts. I was busy with matters of Dragon’s Descent and spent most of my time at the mansion. I don’t think I spent even five nights at the castle. Just a few moments ago I got the news that I was able to sell fifteen wyverns to the Vilikis Royal Family for 45,000 gold coins and the other five were sold for 4,000 gold coins each to the nobles there. I felt truly rich for the first time, but sadly most of that money will disappear in the next few months.
The first wave of shipbuilders, architects and carpenters was sent to Sunset Islands thanks to the funds sent by Vitou. They were sent there under the protection of my elite raid team who not only needed to protect them and help them settle down, but also needed to clear the area near inhabited places of all dangerous monsters. If they are able to capture them, it would be best, but safety is a priority. They are also helping oversee the construction going on alongside Rio and his family that joined Dragon’s Descent.
Right now, the atmosphere in Dragon’s Descent is very lively. After my decision to welcome all races to the guild was announced, several members stepped up and showed clear dissatisfaction with this proclamation, but it was only a very small number. Most of the members were calm and accepted this easily. What surprised me is that there were quite a number of people of mixed race among them. When I learned about that, I made sure to add an appendix to the proclamation that also forbid discrimination against those members as well.
Even though there were only few cases of dissatisfaction and it was soon calmed down, when Black Phoenix first made their appearance at the mansion it still caused quite the commotion and there were several cases of people shouting curses at them. As soon as I caught them I let them understand that I stand by my decision of not allowing any discrimination and punished them on the spot. After that all complaints stopped. I knew that expecting an instant result was not realistic, but with time the members will get used to this change.
Yet despite these few cases, most of the members were welcoming to the members of the Black Phoenix. It was just like Dogusu said, after they had a few drinks with the members, everyone felt more at ease with each other. When I saw everyone mixing well, I could finally relax.
As of yesterday, every member was notified about the transfer of the main force of the clan to the Sunset Islands. Everyone has a choice to either move to Sunset Islands or stay here in Kapitalia. I also made sure to warn each and every one of them about the potential dangers that may occur if they stay behind. They are not dumb, even without my warning, they could fell that something was brewing between Vitou and the King. I will let them make their decision. There is still some time before the transfer is completed.
“Naoko-chan, I’m here to bring you to the castle. The day after tomorrow is the day you must take the test of the Church of Twelve Gods.”
“Is it that time already? Say, when does your contract with Vitou end, Mia?”
Mia, Lorien and their party became much more relaxed around everyone in the clan. There was no longer an air of inapproachability surrounding them. They have become fully integrated among the members, both as Scarlet Phoenix and Black Phoenix.
“Don’t worry about time, you should still have some time to visit the Sunset Islands. When the first cargo ship is built you can start moving the headquarters. As for when my contract ends, it should be on the same day as your wedding. Until then, I have to listen to Vitou when he sends me to bring you back.”
“Actually, the thing I am least worried about is the time. I am only worried that the time I think I have and the time things get moving on would not coincide.”
Mia knows that some serious things will go down on the day of my wedding, but I don’t think she is aware just how big they will be. I am not the only one making plans for that day. That is why everything must be ready by the time my wedding day arrives. I promised the Archduke that I would appear that day, and that is what I intend to do. As for what happens afterwards, I cannot say anything.
Speaking of which, I haven’t seen the Archduke all this time. I know that he is like the wing that comes and goes as he pleases, but lately I have gotten used to having him around and now it feels a little boring without any trouble he tends to help me get into. I must say that I’m starting to miss him.
“Naoko-chan, are we going?”
I snapped out of my daze and went to the castle. Because I didn’t like the atmosphere there, I used every opportunity to stay outside. However, I should be okay staying there for a night or two.
“Mia, I’ll let Vitou end your contract with him after the test. When we go to the Sunset Islands, you will follow along with the members of Scarlet Phoenix after which you will be left behind for one additional month. The Black Phoenix will then take over and guard the treasury that will arrive at that time. To those that stretch their hands too far, show no mercy.”
I’ll be moving the largest batch of goods when I go for an official visit, but the most valuable things will be moved a bit later. I still have to have the treasury present in Kapitalia while most of the members are still living here. I don’t want to bring the truly valuable stuff because I heard Vitou would be bringing his own people as well along with some new faces who I don’t want prying into my wealth.
“I still don’t know why you let others know about the Black Phoenix? Weren’t you planning to keep it a secret?”
“It is because I wanted to build a foundation for a place free of discrimination. Besides, these guys will never betray me. You should try and ask around about the matters of Dragon’s Descent. Unless it is the royal family, or some other large clans, most people won’t be able to tell you anything about it. And even those that keep sending their spies, I made sure that they would only be able to learn the things that we want them to know. I could have stopped any ‘leaks’ from happening, but if there is truly nothing to report, those guys would only keep on taking more and more drastic measures to learn about us. This way we can control what is being leaked out and at the same time keep the other end happy thinking that we don’t know about their spies.”
If those geezers knew the true extent of our power and influence we can have, there is no way they would allow us to move unhindered anywhere near them, especially not in Kapitalia. One of the first things I did when the first wyverns were delivered to Kapitalia was to set up an array of measures that would be used to deal with spies from other places. From time to time I would intentionally leak out news about our “secret” actions, but also make sure that the truly important matters stay hidden.
“Naoko-chan, thank you. Your future is something we all have been dreaming of. When you release the news publicly about accepting members of all races, I am sure many will come swarming to join us.”
“Come on, let’s go back to our room. I’m sure there will be something I need to do tomorrow, otherwise Vitou wouldn’t have called me back a day earlier.”
