CHAPTER 281: THE MAGIC CIRCLE
“I represent the goddess of technology, Yamnitsa, tell me; as the future princess, you must contribute to everyone’s benefit. Have you created any items or magic that can harm others?”
I feel like this is a normal question after a string of questionable ones. But to me it is tricky. The magic crystals Dragon’s Descent sells are something that can be used to harm others and they all were my idea. If I say yes, I will be accused of harboring ill intentions, but if I say no, I will be punished by the Sword of Light. I can only avoid giving a straight answer.
“A knife in the hand of a chef is a tool, but one in the hand of a killer is a weapon. The things that benefit others can also be used to harm them. The only difference is the person using the tool, therefore this question is redundant.”
“The mind of the young Duchess is truly mature and unique.”
This was the only comment he left before standing in the position of three o’clock. I didn’t show any acknowledgement of his praise, but only looked up in the sky. It should be noon soon and this is getting really boring for me. Sanding here for so long is very exhausting.
“The god of fortune, Elrich, asks you; do you condone the Church in your beliefs of your pagan god and discriminate against it in your heathen ways.”
I really don’t know what Thanatos-sama is thinking right now. He’s being called out so many times by the Archbishops. I actually want to know if those twelve guardians are sweating from nervousness and fear that Thanatos-sama will punish them for this one day.
“Why would I? Your actions have nothing to do with me. Besides, those who know about my god, they don’t want to be bothered with worldly matters. Well most of them. What you and your Church does, has little to no effect on me and my beliefs.”
As for my opinion on what they did in the past, I’ll keep it to myself.
“The final question that I, representative of Syrina, Goddess of Magic, have for you is, whether or not you plan on harming others for your own benefit.”
I stared at this person that walked up. Among all the questions asked this could be the best one and the most normal one. It was not asked in order to trap me or undermine me, but to actually test my intentions. It seems that there are still some decent people in the Church.
“As long as they don’t harm me, I will never think of dealing with anyone in that way. Even less so doing it for my own benefit.”
“Young Duchess is truly sincere and knows how to keep those close to her safe and sound. In the future, she will protect her people well. Elicia will have a fine Crown Princess. Now, let’s see the blessings she received.”
I heard the city tower striking the noon bell. The twelve Archbishops stood in the positions from one to twelve o’clock. They began some sort of chant and started gathering mana around them and slowly activating the circle below them.
I made sure to stay alert at this time. I cannot allow anything to go awry. I put all my attention to the magic circle. I must ensure that nothing stops the magic from occurring which turned out to be a good thing because I could feel most of the Archbishops were using their mana to obstruct the magic of the circle. I could sense four areas not being obstructed which was more than enough to let me pass, but I really wanted to see the true purpose of the circle. I could only do that by letting mana pass through unobstructed.
I decided to interfere and inject my own mana into the circle to break the obstruction those people were setting up. I was hoarding mana in front of the obstruction and was waiting for the moment the magic will activate to overflow the circle and activate its full effect.
“What the…”
I might have overestimated the strength these people had, because even before the chanting was over, the mana I sent out broke through and overflowed the entire magic circle lighting it up. Soon, the lights started shining below each of the Archbishops, filling the entire arena with warm and bright light.
As soon as all twelve spots were lit up, a small circle with sixty divisions was revealed and only four lights were lit up. At that moment I knew exactly what this circle was and its full effects. The shock of realization was so big that I couldn’t stop myself from bursting out in hysterical laughter.
***VITOU’S POV***
I don’t ever want to go through something like this again. With every new question that was asked, I felt like I was losing a year of my life and I even wasn’t a person being asked these questions. When the all twelve blessings lit up I felt a huge stone off my chest.
However, Naoko’s reaction made no sense to me. Her uncontrollable laughter sounded completely out of place. Even when the magic stopped, she couldn’t control herself and needed a few moments to stop laughing. And even with that, she seemed to be on the verge of breaking into another fit.
“The Duchess is blessed and loved by many gods. May her future be bright.”
Naoko nodded and walked back to me. Thankfully this ended peacefully. I couldn’t wait to ask her what was so funny. When she sat down next to me, we watched the servants of the Archbishops dismantle the metal contraption, but Naoko kept on giggling every now and then.”
“What’s wrong with you? What’s making you laugh so much?”
She tried to answer me, but burst into another laughing fit which she tried to cover up with a cough, unsuccessfully. When she calmed down once again, she was finally able to give me an answer.
“You won’t believe this, that contraption, the tool that others go through the test of the Church is a magic circle. A magic circle that tells the time. Those fools thought it was a way to communicate with gods. Hahaha, I’m actually crying. When the circle was activated, it was 12:04PM. Ahahaha.”
She started laughing again while I stood there unable to move. This information is simply too much. I wanted to deny her claim, but I had no knowledge about magic circles. Considering her reaction, she is definitely not wrong about her conclusion.
