CHAPTER 283: AN ASSASSIN? A THIEF?

“You really don’t want to promise me that? You should know that many heroes already pledged themselves to Elicia and its ruler and promised to protect it. Even your friend Hiiro did so. There is no downside to doing it.”

Stupid Hii-chan, why did you do that? Are you really binding yourself to an old fool like that? You better pray you didn’t make it too serious or removing the magic of the pledge will be hard and painful.

“They are free to do what they want, but I still wish to remain neutral. If there are things I can help with, I will do it for Vitou, as long as it doesn’t affect my neutral stance.”

“It seems that I am out of luck. Vitou, look after her. It seems she has grown a soft spot for you. I look forward to the day the two of you tie the knot.”

The King left and I didn’t miss the glance he took towards the trees behind us. It seems that the person in the forest is one of the King’s men. Let’s wait and see what he plans on doing.

“Nao-chan, I’m sorry about him. I feel really helpless when dealing with my father.”

“Don’t worry, I know it is hard. He’s your family and at the same time, he’s the king of a nation. Royal families are a mess, that is why I don’t want to join one. Please don’t blame me when the time comes. Vitou, to me you are a good friend and I think of you as one of my own people, but I cannot stand by you, the way you want me to.”

I know that I would hurt him by saying this and that in the future it will only become worse, but he should be prepared. Although I never admitted our relationship, breaking up is impossible as the King was the one to set this up.

“You really hate this engagement, do you?”

“Sorry.”

There is nothing else I could do but say sorry. The sooner he accepts the fact that I will not marry him, the easier it would be later on. We were both sitting in silence, no one wanting to be the first one to speak up, when I picked up movement among the trees. Finally, I was getting tired of waiting.

I didn’t know what this person wanted, but I should be able to find out soon. Gathering mana around me, I prepared to cast defensive magic in case of an attack. Vitou must have noticed my movement because he gave me a questioning look. I lightly shook my head and looked at the trees.

The next moment, a snapping sound was heard followed by a whizzing sound. I set up a barrier almost immediately and an arrow stopped mid air about two meters from us before falling on the ground.

“Who’s there?! Who dares to attack the members of my Royal Family in broad daylight?”

Vitou ran inside the grove, but I was more focused on the black arrow on the ground. Just now, that arrow wasn’t aiming at me. What is the King thinking? That is his own flesh and blood. Has his brain turned rotten?

“Vitou, bring that person to me. I have some questions. He is hiding in the treetops. Go ten meters forward and he should be on an oak tree.”

I called out to Vitou. I wanted to know who was the assassin and why he was ordered to attack Vitou in the first place. When the two appeared in my sight, I couldn’t help but freeze for a moment. It was all because the person Vitou was bringing was someone I saw once before.

“Speak! Who are you? Who sent you? How did you get inside? If you answer, you might still keep all your body parts.”

“Puny Elicians, your defense is so bad I only had to walk to get here.”

I frowned when I heard him talk. Looking at his clothes, I recognized that they belong to a style worn in Vilikis. Add on the accent and you have a perfect misunderstanding. I finally know what the King wanted. He wanted Vitou to develop dissatisfaction and hatred towards Vilikis and go along with his plans. It seems that the only one holding onto family sentiment is Vitou, while the King should be thinking of him as an extraordinary chess piece that he nurtured all these years. The only problem is that his chess piece is not acting according to his wishes anymore.

“A dog of Vilikis, I wonder who…”

“Vitou, stop! He’s not what you think he is. This is a trap meant to lure you.”

I couldn’t let Vitou start dancing at the palm of his father’s hand. Avoiding war is my number one priority and having Vitou keep the King in check is the best option for me.”

“Nao-chan, what are you saying? Do you know this person?”

I nodded and turned to stare at the assassin. I am definitely going to be preached by Vitou after this, but right now, clearing the doubts is the main priority.

“You were a dog when I saw you last time, and you are still a dog now. It’s no wonder you could do nothing but fail. A spy, an assassin and a thief? Do you think you are almighty? Truly you could only be called a jack of all trades but master of none. A stain and shame for each of those professions.”

I saw in his eyes that he recognized me. The last time I spoke with him, I also used the same tone of voice and the same posture of looking down on him. The only difference is that the person standing next to me is not the Archduke.

“You… you… how could? How could you be the one that stole the Sword of Fire?!”
