Ader was a prisoner we’d taken when the Count of Gantz’s army broke and fled. I’d given him a chance in the battles against Gantz and Count Khalifa, and he’d shown unexpected talent in negotiations. That was why I’d picked him as deputy commander of this mixed unit.
He gave off a bit of a carefree impression, but there was no hostility in him and he was capable in a quietly competent way. For a frontier margrave’s army short on people, he was very convenient. I also wanted to get my money’s worth out of the large gold coin I’d given him as a reward.
He still stubbornly refuses to talk about his past, though. His bearing clearly shows traces of formal education, so I guess he is a fallen noble’s son.
A deputy commander is a middle manager who absorbs complaints from below and above—a walking punching bag for everyone’s frustrations.
