“I actually… have company with me.”
“Oh, really? But you looked like you were alone.”
“I kind of lost them.”
“Ah, so you got separated.”
“Yes. They did.”
“Not you?”
“That’s right. It was them, not me.”
“I don’t really see the difference, but I’ve already ordered drinks, so how about just one with me? After that, I’ll help you look for your friends.”
“Just one, then.”
“Thanks, lost girl.”
“I’m not lost!”
Cecily and the mercenary-looking woman sat side by side at the tavern counter. In front of each of them sat a glass—chilled fruit-infused water for Cecily and a harsh-smelling spirit strong enough to get you drunk just by sniffing it.
The woman took a sip of the spirit. “Oh yeah, I haven’t introduced myself yet.” She chuckled. “I’m Mildred Ai—”
Crash. Something shattered behind them. They both turned to look at the same time.
